Includes a letter referring to St Patrick's College and the poor reputation it has. Remarks '...I am sorry to say that the college was fast losing ground in the estimation of the public for want of management and even yet the evil is not completely checked...we have been informed lately by the priests that we had not succeeded as was anticipated...the college has been looked upon as a failure.' Refers to Fr Dalton and his position as Superior of the Mission. Remarks '...he seems to me to want firmness of purpose and resolution to face the difficulty...My conviction is that if he goes on we cannot succeed.' (26 April 1867, 8pp). Includes a letter describing a trip to Ballarat to preach a sermon and a visit he paid to one of the gold mines called "the Band of Hope". Remarks 'The yield on the day I was there was 437 oz; a few days before it had been 1637 oz for one day, the largest yield ever obtained in a gold mine in Australia and worth over £6,500.' Remarks that he was presented with a nugget which he sold '...for the benefit of Richmond Church.' Continues 'Four hundred miners are employed at this one mine...the close bad air of the mines tells very quickly on them and they die off rapidly. Three batches of them relieve one another every eight hours...the work goes on night and day - Sunday and holiday - otherwise the water would go in upon them and flood the mine.' Letter and postcard to Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ from Dr Katherine Walsh-Strnad, relating to her research on Archbishop FitzRalph. Includes typed notes on Otto III. Also includes Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ’s wedding invitation to Katherine’s marriage to Dr Alfred Strnad at University Church in July 1976.

A file containing two letters written by ‘1st Censor’ and ‘2nd Censor’ to Irish Fr Provincial concerning “Our Life of Grace”. Handwritten notations written by [Rev. George O'Neill SJ] query some of the censor’s points and correct others.

Letter from Rev. George O'Neill SJ, 35 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial concerning an article written by Fr Phelan about Canon Sheehan. Remarks that the article was sent to him as a reader for the Catholic Truth Society ‘I reported strongly against its publication thinking it lamentable from many points of view. The other reader and the Hon. Sec. were equally unfavourable.’.

Letter from Rev. George O'Neill SJ, 35 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial concerning Fr Provincial’s objection to Scholastics continuing as committee members of the English Society at University College. Remarks ‘This Society fulfils an exceedingly useful function in the college. It exercises its members in three most useful things...writing...reading them out...(and) criticizing each others work.’. Continues ‘I fear that their (the Scholastics) withdrawal from active participation...would simply mean its extinction.’.

Letter from Brother William Nash SJ, St Ignatius Presbytery, 27 High Road, London to [ ] concerning his thoughts on the late Brother John Conway SJ. Remarks ‘...the characteristics which stood out were his cheerfulness...and his natural spirit of religion.’. Concludes [he had a]...capacity to bear the unpleasant things of life with a laugh and a joke. He was to me a great Jesuit.’.

A file of letters from Fr James A. Cullen to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ, concerning his noviceship. Includes a letter in which Fr Cullen remarks ‘If I might have a month or five weeks for vacation...I would prize it as it might strengthen my body and soul.’. Continues ‘I am very anxious for many reasons that my noviceship should be on the continent.’ (2 June 1881, 4pp). Includes a letter to Rev Tuite SJ thanking him for organising a place in the Novitiate of Arlon, Belgium (14 July 1881, 4pp).

Letter from Fr James A. Cullen, House of Missions, Enniscorthy, County Wexford to Rev James Tuite SJ, Irish Provincial, Milltown Park, Dublin regarding his wish to join the Society of Jesus. Remarks ‘...my life for years has been drifting in this direction.’. Requests a meeting with Rev Tuite SJ; includes a letter from Dr Cruise, 93 Merrion Square, Dublin to Rev Tuite concerning Fr Cullen. Remarks ‘I don’t find any objection to his carrying out this wish.’.

Letter from Fr James A. Cullen, Tagoat, Wexford to Rev James Tuite SJ, Irish Provincial, Milltown Park, Dublin concerning a meeting with Dr Warren. Remarks ‘He could not be kinder with me and told he would place no obstacle in the way of my vocation.’ Refers also to shares in National Bank stock he (Fr Cullen) intends to sign over to the Society.

• remarks ‘I am devoting every spare moment to the study of the “Exercises” ' ( 8 January 1882, 2pp);
• refers to the masses sent to him by Rev. Tuite SJ, ‘I am writing for a fresh supply - As I say all the masses primarily for your intentions now...I get through their number quickly...’. Refers to the Bank shares remarking ‘I had a note from Fr. Greene desiring to have the Bank Shares transferred to Railway Stock...I am quite willing that he should do with them whatever he thinks best.’ (15 February 1882, 3pp).

Copy letter from Rev James Tuite SJ, Irish Provincial, Milltown Park, Dublin to Fr James A. Cullen concerning Fr Cullen’s entrance to the noviceship and reminding him to obtain his “letteres dimissoriales” from Dr Warren. Remarks that he hopes to be able to secure a place on the continent. Refers also to the issue of money and remarks ‘We have not any shares in Banks nor do we want our money in that way.’ Suggests that the shares should be transferred to Fr Cullen’s name, sold and reinvested.

Letter from Fr James A. Cullen, 4 High Street, Buxton, England to Rev James Tuite SJ, Irish Provincial, Milltown Park, Dublin concerning his noviceship in Arlon, Belgium.’.

Typescript copy of a letter from Surgeon Conway Dwyer to Fr Robert Kane SJ concerning Fr Kane’s operation and illness during the months of May, June and July 1917. Expresses his thanks to Fr Kane for a portrait of Fr Kane and a copy of one of his books. Concludes ‘I feel very happy at the successful issue of what is always a severe and trying operation. I earnestly trust that you will be able now to carry on your great and good work for many fruitful years.’.

Letter from Fr William O'Keeffe SJ, St Ignatius’ Hall, Leeson Park, Dublin to Mr Cyril Power SJ thanking him and others for their congratulations on his ordination. Remarks that there are rumours about the Juniors and Novices coming up to Dublin ‘A very nice place near Rathfarnham is said to be bought for them...I should very much like to see the Rathfarnham place taken, it consists of 200 or 300 acres and a small lake. I have often been through the domain (sic) a Mrs Blackburn owns it.’.

Letter from Fr Michael Browne SJ, [Fr Albert Power’s novice master], St Stanislaus College, Tullamore, County Offaly to Mr Cyril Power SJ concerning news from the college and wishing Mr Power well in his forthcoming examinations. Concludes ‘Pray for me you see I do not forget you or any of those I ever taught.’.

Letter from Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ, St Francis Xavier’s, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Fr Patrick Connolly SJ concerning a poem written by Fr Canavan. Praises the poem but remarks that it cannot be published.

Letter from Dr John Thomas Troy, Archbishop of Dublin to Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ, English Provincial. Refers to collections for the rebuilding of ‘more than one hundred Chapels in different parts of the Kingdom’, most of which were destroyed during the Rebellion. Refers to letters shown to him by ‘Mr. [Richard] Callaghan’ from Fr Gabriel Grüber in which the latter styles himself ‘Praepositus Generalis Societatis Iesu’ and announces that the Society is ‘perfectly re-established by the Holy See’. Expresses his doubts in this regard. Remarks, 'No one more sincerely deplored the suppression of the Society that I did, nor wishes more anxious for its reestablishment'.

Letter from Archbishop Troy to Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ. Encloses a bill for £60 (not included). Refers to ‘Mr. Callaghan’, and expresses his hopes for the re-establishment of the Society.

• letter seeking information on St Malachy for an article Fr Dunning wishes to write in the school magazine and expressing surprise at the apparent lack of interest, on the part of the Irish, in St Malachy (18 January 1973, 2pp);
• letter seeking information for a lecture he is going to give to the London Medieval Society on ‘The attitude of the Irish Church to the Norman Invasion’ (13 November 1974, 3pp);
• letter on his brother Tom’s ‘valuable collection on Old and Middle English Literature’ which has been offered to U.C.D.. Includes a memorial card of Prof. Thomas P. Dunning, C.M. who died in 4 May 1973.

Also includes references to Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ ‘presenting to U.C.D.’ his ‘most valuable card-index on Irish Medieval History, together with your most valuable correspondence with distinguished scholars.
