Refers to Archbishop Troy’s appeal to Rome in relation to the will of Fr Richard Callaghan, and reminds the Cardinal of the oath sworn by all English priests to renounce all pretensions of the Holy See to interfere in civil affairs within Great Britain. Also alludes to the dangers of such interference especially when the Holy See is subject to the rule of Napoleon Buonaparte. Discusses the will of Fr Callaghan in relation to the agreement made by Irish ex-Jesuits in 1793, and asserts that no promise was ever made to leave Jesuit property to the Irish prelates. Expresses surprise and dismay at the latter’s actions and emphasises that his (Stone’s) letter to Troy was written in confidence. Claims that he knows of no ex-Jesuits who maintain that their Society is canonically re-established in the British Dominions. Refers to a ‘severe letter’ received by him from Cardinal Borgia in relation to the matter. Refers to the landing of French troops, the defence effort by the Sicilians, and the subsequent surrender of some French, and the flight of others back to Naples, upon the arrival of the British troops. States that Paccanari ‘has taken a wife & walks the streets of Rome with her with shameless effrontery.’ Expresses the fear that the Irish have complained of him (Kenney) ‘for having led F. Stone astray’.

MacMahon SJ asking him to allow Fr Edward J Coyne SJ devote as much time to the Vocation Organisation Committee over the coming months so that the report may be compiled; includes a copy reply from Fr MacMahon remarking that Fr. Coyne will '...devote to the preparation of the report of the Commission all the time and energy available.' (20 March 1942, 1p).

Letter from Fr Henry King SJ to ‘Fr. Seán’ asking him to help him with spiritual work. He feels he has neglected a community in Lower Mount Street and writes, ‘Of course I was sick and then unwell for many weeks and then considerable difficulties with retreats in May and June and then a fortnight in Achill and then my own retreat and now the 30 days etc etc You are young and I am not’.

Xerox copy of a letter from James Marshall, Richmond House, Roehampton Park SW, London, England to Cardinal Newman concerning his return to Africa '...sorely against what I may call my "home" feelings.' Remarks that he was asked by Lord Aberdare to accept the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria but for personal reasons he refused this offer and instead agreed to take on the responsibility of organising a judicial system '...on the distinct understanding that I might come away as soon as I liked. This I have accepted on the condition I was to take out a barrister with me who would take up the post when I left.' Continues 'My thoughts at once turned to barristers who had been at the Oratory School...it is now settled and arranged that Mr. W. V. Kane of the Dublin Bar and an O.S. boy is to go out with me and remain as C(hief) J(ustice).' Asks for Cardinal Newman's blessing.

Asks for news from Ireland. Remarks that he is very happy living in France and recounts news of the Irish Brothers studying there reporting that all are very happy. Remarks '..you have experienced the genuine charity of our French brothers, it makes me very glad to have the opportunity of making part at least of one's studies abroad (4pp)'.

Copy of letter from Fr Charles Plowden SJ. Addressed to English prelates. Refers to the suppression of the Society, to the establishment of Stonyhurst as a seminary to supply missioners to other parts of the English province, and to the papal brief obtained by the College from Pope Pius VI. States that, in spite of this brief, restrictions were placed on the members of the College, which forced each of them to serve the mission in his own native vicariate, and prevented them from being presented to ‘a different V.A.’. Refers to reports spread by Sir Hippesley and others, which had a negative impact on Stonyhurst, and to other complaints against the institution, including that made by Dr Gregory Stapleton. States that a papal decree re-confirmed the rights of Stonyhurst, and explains that this document may not have been communicated to his (Plowden’s) present addressees.

Remarks '(From his letter)...you will see he claims a large slice of our library as "his collections"... It was a well known fact...that Fr Brown as librarian here, got most of the new books on his pet subjects.' (15 May 1941, 2pp).

Remarks 'He was quite well aware of the Archbishop's attitude in reference to the previous lecture.' Remarks that a number of people at the meeting where Dr Downey's lecture was discussed advised that the Archbishop should be informed. Continues that it was agreed to seek the Archbishop's support. Remarks '...when Mr O'Kelly Hon. Sec. went up to Archbishop's House he was told that the Archbishop could not give his patronage to the lecture and was thinking of with drawing his patronage altogether from the library.' Following a letter of apology and an undertaking to cancel the lecture the Archbishop agreed to continue his patronage of the Central Catholic Library.

Remarks 'Regarding the matter of Fr Cahill's lectures I am in complete agreement with your Reverence's views - no later than today complaints were made to me regarding what he said...I think he should only be allowed to speak from Mss which has first been censored.'

Letter from Máire Ní Bhriain (Máire O'Brien), 43 Mespil Road, Dublin to Fr Edward Cahill SJ concerning the resignation of her post in Madrid after the signing of the Treaty and '...on receiving Gavan Duffy's "Free State" instructions - the carrying out of which would have been entirely against my principles.' Remarks that she was then offered a job on '...Fine Ghaedheal by my former "boss"...Bob Brennan and we are working together very harmoniously linking up the Irish race. Our Free State friends are...trying to smash us as they would smash the Republic and every Irish institution but we are going come out on top in spite of them.

Refers to Fr Peter Kenney SJ and his imminent arrival in Stonyhurst. Also discusses the Jesuit presence in France, and their establishment of ‘petits seminaires’ there. Letter from Fr Patrick Meagher SJ, writing from Gardiner Street, Dublin, to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, Vice Provincial, St Stanislaus College Tullabeg, King's County (County Offaly). Refers to the case of a young [novice] – ‘H.T.’, who is suffering from some sort of illness. Reports that he (Meagher) consulted a surgeon on the state of the man’s health. Reports that he received a letter that morning from Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ in Rome, who wrote about the church re-decoration in which he was involved, and also, more extensively, about a lecture given in Rome, which cast aspersions on the Catholic clergy of Ireland. Also refers to a letter he received from Fr Aylmer. Describes preparations for the ‘Festival’, including the recruiting of clergy to say Mass. Reports on the progress of building work also.

Letter from Fr Peter Kenney SJ, writing to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ Church of St Francis, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin. Suggests that the latter hold his Consultation at Clongowes, and that it be deferred until after Easter. Refers to the books brought back from Paris by Mr O'Grady, and asks Fr Bracken to let him know which ones to keep. Reports on a Novena he participated in, and also on the exercise he has been taking recently.

Letter from George Joseph Plunket Browne, Bishop of Galway to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ. Refers to the death of Fr Kenney, for whom he had a solemn requiem and High Mass celebrated in the chief chapel in Galway. Also thanks him in advance for agreeing to conduct a spiritual retreat the following July.

Letter from Fr Patrick Bracken SJ to [ ]. Recommends various sources for J[ohn] O’Connell and other Catholic members of the House of Commons for their argument against the supremacy of the Crown. Suggests that they identify themselves, in this matter, ‘with all the Presbyterians of Ireland & Scotland as well as with the other Dissenters in denouncing & repudiating the Royal Supremacy’, and in doing so, gain support. Also refers to the Catholic episcopacy and the Reformation.

Typed notes by Fr Francis Finegan SJ on an obituary of Fr James Broderick SJ by Fr Philip Caraman SJ. Fr Finegan refutes the suggestion that Fr Broderick was refused admission to the Irish Province on the grounds of his social status.

Letter from Fr Michael Browne SJ [writing from the Crescent, Limerick] to the Vice Provincial. Announces that he intends to sent Fr James Jeffcoat SJ to St John’s the following day for treatment, and states that Fr Hugh Mulhall SJ is to take Fr Jeffcoat’s place at Roscrea.
