Apart from considerations of poverty, I cannot see that the closing of Emo is any occasion for festivity. After all, Emo is being closed because God does not see fit to bless the Province as at present being run with sufficient vocations to justify keeping it open.' (27 August 1969, 3pp). Correspondence mostly between two sisters and the Irish Fr Provincial concerning the sisters’ efforts to contest the will of their late cousin, Josephine Keshan, decd., 1910, who left the administration of her entire estate to the Society of Jesus. The matter was settled amicably.

Copy letter from Rev William Delany SJ, University College, St Stephen's Green, Dublin to the Archbishop of Dublin, William J. Walsh concerning the application of the Governing Body of University College for three years tenancy of the St Stephen's Green buildings. Remarks ‘The first essential preliminary to the transfer is obviously [to] providing a home for this community to which they may transfer their belongings...’. States that he has searched the neighbourhood for a suitable hall of residence where Jesuit Fathers could also live. Continues ‘...the most I could secure were two houses some 6 minutes walk from each other. No. 35 Lower Leeson Street... and Winton House, Winton Road...’. Remarks that these two houses although physically separate ‘...will be under one jurisdiction the responsible head being the superior in Leeson Street.’. Concludes ‘...I recognise most fully the advantage of having the new Institution begin its existence in the old home of Newman’s “Catholic University” and this helps me to go not merely with resignation but with positive gladness.’.

Remarks that ‘...the leave of the Holy See...is now necessary.’. Continues ‘It will make things smoother if you mention in the petition...that this is not a question of a new foundation but the establishment of two houses rendered advisable by legal changes which involved the removal from University College.’. In a postscript marked ‘Confidential’ the Archbishop refers to the Chair of Logic. Remarks that he thought Fr Maher was going forward and ‘On that account I did not regard Shine’s candidature as a real one...It is said there will be a veto from Cork against any but an O.P.!’.

This decision was made following the change of regulations of the National University requiring students to attend lectures in one of the University Colleges. In 1883 the trustees of the Catholic University leased to the Society of Jesus the University buildings of 84, 85 and 86 St. Stephen’s Green which were given the new name of University College, Dublin. In 1908 the National University of Ireland came into existence and with that, the Jesuit community left St. Stephen’s Green for a new residence at Lower Leeson Street in 1909/10. Known as St Ignatius House of Writers since 1952, previously the house saw itself as a Collegiun Inchoatum, a burgeoning college of the National University. Many of the Jesuits who lived in the house taught at University College Dublin.
The Jesuit journal 'Studies: An Irish Quarterly Review', 'the devotional magazine 'The Sacred Heart Messenger' and the Irish language equivalent, 'An Timire', are published from Lower Leeson Street.
University Hall, also known as Hatch Hall, was a student hall of residence at Lower Hatch Street, Dublin. Founded by the Jesuits in 1913, for third level male students studying in Dublin, it was under the administration of the Superior of 35 Lower Leeson Street until 1975. It closed in 2004.
The Irish Jesuit Archives has been located at Lower Leeson Street since 1958 when it moved from Upper Gardiner Street.
The papers of St Ignatius House of Writers, Lower Leeson Street deal with the interior and exterior of the buildings, renovations, deeds, domestic and Jesuit community matters and finance. For University Hall, the material relates to bequests, property issues, stained glass, examinations and accounts. There is a small amount of material on Studies, the Sacred Heart Messenger and An Timire. The material is mainly in the form of letters, ledgers, architectural plans, maps and photographs.
