Explains that, with the scholastics out of the Roman College, ‘double professors are required’, and that many have been sent elsewhere. Undertakes to send to Fr Walsh the portrait of Fr. Ffrench ‘in oil colours and with pensil [sic]’. Reports that the previous day they had a procession in the Church of St. Ignatius ‘to place the body of the Bd John Berchmans in the new shrine’. Encloses a photograph of a painting by Gagliardi Junior ‘and offered by F. Rossi to the Augustinian Father who delivered the panegyric of the Bd Peter at the Gesù’.

Thanks the latter for the money order which he enclosed in his last letter. Discusses the matter of the payment of stipendia for masses. Refers to the suspension of the sale of a farm belonging to the Irish College in Rome. Reports that the Pope had made a decree in relation to the Venerable Fr. Antony Baldinucci SJ, saying that he ‘possessed the theological and cardinal virtues in grada heroico’. Asks Fr Walsh to communicate to him details in relation to the proposed painting of Blessed Peter Faber, and asks where it is to be sent. Reports that the Fr General is in Fiesole at present.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Collegio Romano, Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that the Fr General has decided to help Dr Ricard with his college; asks Fr Walsh to find someone to take charge of it, and who would be competent to teach philosophy and theology in ‘a new colonial establishment’. Expresses his admiration for Bishop Ricard and his satisfaction at the thought of a new foreign mission. Refers to the problems with the Bishop of Salford and the opening of a school in Manchester.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Collegio Romano, Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he met Cardinal Cullen while in Rome, and adds that he has heard that the latter had written a letter to Rome critical of the Jesuits in ‘the Manchester affair’, which was settled in favour of the Bishop of Salford. Refers to Dr Ricards’ mission in South Africa. Sends his correspondent two prospectuses of Fr Garrucci’s work on ancient Christian Art. Admits that he had no opportunity of speaking to Fr Angelini in relation to Blessed Berchman's letter. Undertakes to put his correspondent’s letter before the Fr General, and gives his opinion on the opening of letters in the colleges of the Society, and the allowing of scholastics to go out alone. Suggests that his correspondent should send his boys and scholastics to take degrees at the London University.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Thanks his correspondent for ‘the paper & for the good news’. Sends the congratulations of the Fr General, who was particularly pleased by the part played by Fr Delany. Hopes that ‘the business of the college may be brought to an equally favourable termination’. Refers to the case of a member of the Limerick community, whose removal is left to the discretion of Fr Weld's correspondent. Adds that the Fr General is anxious that the man in question should be removed as his behaviour could cause scandal. Also refers to the ‘Montgret lease’, and states that if this Limerick diocesan seminary succeeds it ‘well may lead the way to very important work for the Society in Ireland’. Discusses the importance of helping the development of the Australian province, and refers to the sending of Frs Thomas Keating and Joseph Brennan there.
Note: The name of the man in Limerick, who may be removed from there is blacked out in this letter. The letter is accompanied by an envelope marked: ‘F. Rabbitte; 1. Letter enclosed for archives. 2. I am keeping the other (two) letters; [ ]’.

He is to be dismissed if the charge is substantiated. Refers to the terna for the new Superior in Australia, and to the ‘University Reserve’. Asks Fr Tuite what has been done about Fr Murphy's expedition to America, and about studies at Milltown Park. Adds that Fr Chambellan has recalled Fr René.

Reports that the Fr General is concerned about the ‘non appearance of Fr Clery’, who was to have returned to Ireland from Sydney. Also quotes from ‘an authentic paper’ in answer to Fr Tuite's question about the formulas of the last vows.

He sent me accounts of these missions…He never thought of himself, his aim was to use everything he could to bring souls to God… I have kept letters of his since 1939 & all the years of the war & until he wrote before Christmas to announce his illness’ (Aug. 1968, 4pp). Encloses seven letters from Fr Sheil, thanking her for sending badges and medals and discussing her health and his missions. Includes letter in which he remarks ‘…thanks so much for all your lovely pictures and things. They are immensely valued over here. Sometimes indeed religion is not valued, but I hope that these pictures etc. will make it impossible for them to forget the lovely things of Our Faith. One little boy brought five Protestant pals, mostly bigger than himself, to the mission at West Hartlepool. I have had many conversions of people years away from Mass and the Sacraments. Many others have rejected me. The [leak]age of the children when they leave school, & have no Catholic school, and no good parents, is frightful. I start missions again on January 8th at Coventry and near Northampton. They will be very tough, so help me with your prayers. I bless each house I enter, put them on their knees, if they don’t refuse, and instal (sic.) a holy picture’ (28 Dec. 19--, 2pp). Includes a letter written from St Mary's, Athlone remarking that if the Society of Jesus do not take Mungret then it will be offered to the Holy Ghost Fathers (nd, 11pp). Includes a letter written from the College of the Sacred Heart, Crescent, Limerick concerning a meeting with the Bishop (Dr Butler). Remarks that the Bishop did not know that the Society was interested in taking Mungret '…otherwise he would not have consented to Lord Emly's request to invite the Fathers of the H. Ghost' (29 December 1881, 13pp). Includes a letter written from the College of the Sacred Heart, Crescent, Limerick concerning a system of studies for Mungret. Remarks that the trustees have made a condition that agriculture must be taught but have agreed that the teaching of chemistry and botany would fulfil this condition. Refers to the Holy Ghost fathers efforts to get Mungret. (9 January 1882, 8pp).
