Includes documents relating to religious instruction of Catholics, descriptions of clerical controversy, disputes with Protestants, conversions of Protestants to Catholicism, preaching, Catholic education, addresses presented to the Governor of Malta, Fr Esmonde's Journal describing his time in Malta, correspondence. Letters are addressed to Fr Esmonde at San Calcedonia, outside Valletta. This house belonged to the Sicilian Province and Malta had a close connection with the Sicilian Province. Note: at least 50% of the documents are written in Italian.

Remarks '...I have never seen the names of two individuals included in the same request for a prayer, though I have met with several headstones on which the names of two persons were inscribed.' Continues to discuss the topic citing examples.

Letter from Margaret Russell, Newry to [Rev. Charles O'Hare] concerning news of her family. Refers also to vestments. Refers to her son Charles (later Lord Russell of Killowen) who won a prize for his essay and that he is to read the essay aloud in the Assembly Rooms, Newry. Remarks '...I think it was scarcely kind or judicious to ask so young a lad to come before the public as a lecturer, it is too trying an ordeal and may expose him to the charge of presumption which thank God he does not deserve...' Includes a note on the letter by Fergal McGrath SJ (former Irish Province Archivist).

Letters from Fr John Etheridge SJ, London & Liverpool to Fr [ ] SJ concerning a legal opinion he obtained on property belonging to the Society of Jesus in England. Remarks that counsel stated that the Society would become liable to the investigation of the Commissioners for Charitable Trusts. Continues '…I shall keep as quiet as I can and instruct our people that our properties belong to those individuals who are named in the deeds and can be disposed of by them as they see best, without any obligation of trust.'

John Henry Newman, Rector of the Catholic University, Dublin regarding an offer of the Professorship of Archaeology at the University. Remarks ‘...I would gladly accept (it), if the term does not mean more than I could honestly undertake.’. Explains that he is working under a Royal Commission as a co-translator of the Brehon Laws and also with the Irish Archaeological and Celtic Society, to translate and edit an ancient Irish Law Tract, the Battle of Moylena.

Letter from James Hardiman to Eugene O'Curry, Royal Irish Academy House, Grafton Street, Dublin giving details of the Moore family of Bries, County Mayo. Hardiman includes details of an enrolment of a settlement dated 5 October 1611 discovered by him.

Letter from Sr Mary Francis Bridgeman of the Sisters of Mercy, to unknown bishop/archbishop. Relates her experiences of travelling to, and working in, British military hospitals with other Irish Catholic nuns in the Crimea (Scutari and Koulali) when Florence Nightingale was in charge there. States that she writes at the instigation of Frs Molony and Ronan. Refers to the bad relations that existed between the nuns and Nightingale, and the charges of proselytism laid against the former.

Letter from Sr Mary Baptist Russell, St Mary's Hospital, San Francisco to her sister Sarah Russell (later Mother Mary Emmanuel, Sister of Mercy, Newry) concerning Sarah's desire to join the sisters in Newry but that their mother has objected to this. Suggests that Sarah might come out to join her in California. Remarks '...I half concluded in my own mind that the Almighty destined you to share in our [life] here and was making use of dear Mamma's opposition to your wishes.' Remarks that they are very short of sisters. Concludes 'I dare say Mother Catherine (in Newry) will think I am somewhat selfish but no selfish motive activates me I assure you...'

Letter from David Moriarty, Bishop of Ardfert, to Dr Edmund O'Reilly SJ and explains the geographical location of Torc View, in relation to Killarney and Muckross. Hopes that the Jesuits will buy the land and build a school there.

Letter from Fr John McEncroe to Rev. R. Healy concerning the administration of St John's College. Remarks that the fellows of the College have 'expressed their 'unanimous' wish and desire to procure, if possible, a member of your Society for this important office'.

Letter from Fr Thomas William Croke, President of St Colman’s College, Fermoy, County Cork, to an unnamed Jesuit father. Regrets that he does not have the time to undertake the panegyric of St. Ignatius. Expresses his admiration for the latter, and for the Society in general.

Letter from Eugene O'Curry, Royal Irish Academy, Dublin to T. D. Mc [ ], Montreal, Canada regarding a draft of $100 sent to O'Curry to purchase books. O'Curry apologises for the delay explaining that some volumes he wished to purchase were not available and that he fell ill on two occasions. O'Curry refers to the death of his son in 1857 and his wife in 1858. Concludes that he is still working on the Brehon Laws and that he has published the first twenty one lectures given by him to the Catholic University.

Letter from Dr W. Scallan to Fr Alexander Kyan SJ. Voices his concern over the further detention of Fr Kyan’s brother in a ‘Lunatic Asylum’, and states that he wishes to withdraw the authorisation which he originally gave for his detention.

Letter from Townly W. Hardiman, Solicitor and Agent of Mrs L. B. Hamlin, 22 Bachelors Walk, Dublin to the executors of the will of A. N. Skelly concerning the affairs of W. N. Skelly and premises in Drogheda. Refers to the payment of rents due on the premises and gives notice to the executors of the will that they are liable for the rent and responsible for keeping the premises in good repair.

Letter from Dr W. Scallan to Fr Alexander Kyan SJ. Refers to a previous letter of 13 September 1859 and asks Fr Kyan to inform him of his [Kyan's] brother's present address, and whether he is being detained as ‘a lunatic’.

Letter from Dr W Scallan to Fr [ ]. Refers to the concerns he has in relation to the detention of Fr Alexander Kyan's brother. States that he may make an application to the Queen’s Bench regarding the matter. Encloses letters, which he hopes will explain the matter further (not included).

Letter from Dr W Scallan to Fr [ ]. Refers to the latter’s reply to his letter of 19 January. Defends himself and his actions with regard to his dealings with Fr Kyan. Claims that he advised 'a course of extreme liberality towards Rev A Kyan in the recent events', and states that the latter ought to be grateful to him (Scallan). Asks for the return of the letters he sent, and directs his addressee's attention to the pamphlet, which he encloses (not included).

Copy of letter from Howard Kyan to [ ]. Accuses the latter of doing nothing for him while he (Kyan) remained at Farnham House. Asserts that his sister-in-law is living under his addressee's roof, and is being directed by his ‘wicked counsel’. Also refers to his brothers John and Fr Alexander Kyan.

Letter from Fr Andrew J Rorke SJ, St Beuno's College, Wales to Fr [ ], regarding his financial affairs.

Copy of letter from Howard Kyan to Dr Scallan. Assures the latter that he is in good health, and is at liberty to go anywhere he wishes, having left Dr Duncan's some time previously. States that when his sister-in-law has become reconciled to her husband he shall be ‘very happy to see her’.

Letter from John MacHale, Archbishop of Tuam, to Irish Fr Provincial Joseph Lentaigne SJ. Refers to the latter's letter, which announced that Fr O’Reilly was being sent to MacHale’s diocese to conduct a retreat for the clergy on 20 August. Expresses his gratitude.

Copies of two letters from Fr Alexander Kyan SJ to Dr. Scallan. The first refers to Scallan's letter of 13 September. Refers to his [Fr. Kyan's] brother Howard's removal to Dr Duncan's, and assures him that he has been a frequent visitor. Refutes the suggestion that his brother is being detained. (15 September 1859). In the second letter Fr Kyan requests that Dr Scallan should send him ‘no other impertinent letters’. (9 January 1860). There is also a note at the bottom of the page stating that Howard was removed from Dr Duncan’s on 29 December 1859, and that ‘James sailed for Liverpool’ on 16 January 1860.

Remarks that he is now arranging to have the outstanding amounts paid to the Inland Revenue Office in Drogheda.

Letter from John Mitchel, 19 Rue de l'Est, Paris, France to John Edward Pigot commenting on the 'Nation'. Remarks 'Indeed I suspect the Editor of that paper wants to be returned to Parliament through ecclesiastical influence.' Refers to the National Petition. Remarks that he is very confident of the effect it will have. Continues 'I am still very strongly of opinion that the rejection of that Petition ought to be followed up, and that quick, with an address somewhat like what I sent you a draft of - and that the address ought to be- not to mankind in general, but to the Emperor of the French or to the French people.'

Letter from Archbishop MacHale to Fr St Leger SJ thanking him for the enclosure of £20 for the poor of the diocese of Tuam in his last letter, and asks him to thank the donor also.

Copy extract of a letter from the Cardinal Prefect of the Propaganda, Cardinal Alessandro Barnabo, Rome to Dr Paul Cullen, Archbishop of Dublin, regarding the baptism of miscarried foetuses. (In Italian).

Report by James [Garttan] on the publication of Professor O'Curry's book. Expresses his regret that Mr Duffy will not purchase all 2,000 copies of the publication ‘...nor the half, nor the quarter, as a commercial speculation. He (Mr Duffy) thinks he could scarcely sell 200 or 300 copies...’. Suggests that Mr Fowler, the University printer, should also be the publisher and that the index should be widely circulated particularly amongst ‘...the most distinguished Archaeologists, Philologists and Ethnologists...(who) make special mention... of the learned researches of Professor O'Curry.’.

A file of letters from Fr Nicholas Wiseman (later Cardinal) to Dr Charles Russell. Includes a letter remarking that due to ill health he cannot edit the next issue of the Dublin Review. Remarks that he has been in contact with Thomas Richardson regarding the impending ownership of the Dublin Review 'Let us get over this one crisis more and please God the Review will be safe. Richardson is determined to push it, it will succeed.' ([ ]1844, 7pp). Includes a letter remarking 'Richardson takes the 'Review' upon our terms...I feel confident...that in his hands the 'Review' will be pushed forward very differently from the past.' Remarks that he hopes Dr. Russell '...may be able to get your friends to write for us.' Concludes 'If the [secret] history of the D.R. were known to the public how strange it would appear - so often in the pains of sinking yet always rescued.' ([ ] 1844, 6pp). Discusses potential articles for the Dublin Review (27 April 1846, 4pp). Refers to the quality of articles appearing in the Review and remarks 'The Review is not deep. It wants some more reasoning and original articles...As for my own article...I ran off the rails and could not bring out what I wanted. Let us get something good for next time.' (2 October 1952, 2pp). Refers again to the type of articles published by the Review. Remarks 'Do you think we are getting into too few hands? Ward, De Morgan, Christie, Newman, Allies etc. have written for us...surely the convert element ought to be more cultivated and I must own I believe the fault lies in our having a mere business editor and no recognised literary one who enjoys the confidence of our learned men. I see the growing narrowness of our work and deplore it. Never a paper on Physics, Astronomical discoveries, Chemistry, Electricity, Steam, Railroads, Physiology, Medicine, Geology, Botany, Law Reform nor even on Politics in the wider sense. Never any article on foreign countries except the bleak north - I mean an original paper. W. B. cannot possibly attend to getting people to write and he has no influence. We shall never do as we ought till something is done to widen our range of topics and writers (18 February 1853, 8pp). Refers to a letter he has written to Dr Newman concerning the Dublin Review and '...begging of him not to enter into any plans for a new Review as we might get all we wanted out of our present one.' (3 January 1857, 3pp). Discusses the unsatisfactory situation regarding the publisher of the Dublin Review. Remarks 'I am satisfied that our only chance of success is a new publisher. If this is not feasible the 'Review' must drop for we cannot possibly go on in the present unsatisfactory manner.' Refers to a 'coalition' with the Rambler and remarks this is impossible. A file of letters from Fr John Ffrench SJ, Gesú, Rome, Italy to Fr Joseph Lentaigne SJ (Vice Provincial: 11 February 1858-1860; First Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus: 8 December 1860 - [ ] 1863). At this time Fr Ffrench SJ was the substitute English Assistant to Fr General. As a result many of the letters have an official slant. Includes an index/précis to the letters by Fr James Rabbitte SJ.
