Letter from Fr Timothy Corcoran SJ, Department of Education, University College Dublin to Fr John Hannon SJ, Professor of Catholic Theology in the National University of Ireland, concerning the assertion in 'The Month', November 1929, that there is no chair of theology in the National University, and that the late Fr Peter Finlay SJ, could not have occupied such a position. Includes clippings on the legalities of the Professorship of Theology at the National University of Ireland (1908-1912) and counterpart deed of endowment of the Professorship of Catholic Theology in the National University of Ireland.93 December 1912).

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Refers to Dr Goethals, a bishop in Calcutta, who runs a newspaper there. Discusses the question of the ‘Dublin College’ and Fr Delany's involvement in the matter. Refers to the negative attitude of Cardinal McCabe to the latter, and to his (Delany's) extravagant tendencies in relation to the College. Believes that ‘the very best professors should be engaged (even Protestants, in cases where no Catholic professor was prominent)’. Suggests that the studies at Miltown be put ‘on a more satisfactory footing’, through the use of the various Jesuits that Fr Tuite has in Dublin, including Fr Finlay, who Fr Porter sent back to Ireland ‘after his grand act’. Asks if he has heard anything about the terna from Australia.

Terms:
Miss Egan appoints Daniel Purcell and Fr Finlay as trustees and transfers £436 4% debenture stock of the Midland Great Western Railway of Ireland Company to the trustees, to be held by them, subject to the following conditions: they shall pay one-fifth of the annual income of the trust fund to the parish priest of Tullamore, county Offaly and one fifth to the Superioress of the Tullamore Convent of Mercy, for the furnishing and upkeep of the parish church ‘now being erected in the town of Tullamore’; one-fifth annually to the St. Vincent de Paul Society; one-fifth to the ‘Police Aided Childrens’ Clothing Society in the City of Dublin for its general purposes’ and one-fifth to the Homestead District Nursing Association of No.22 Lincoln Place. If Miss Egan withdraws at any time from the Dominican Order she shall be at liberty to revoke all or any of the trusts, and the trustees shall transfer the trust fund to her.

Conveys Fr General’s opinion that is more important that Fr Finlay should be installed as a professor of philosophy in the Dublin College than be retained as Prefect of Studies in Tullabeg. Refers to Fr Browne who his going to his Tertianship, and informs Fr Tuite that Fr Keating has been allowed to go to Hadzor, Droitwich [for/after] his retreat. Suggests that Fr Browne be sent there too.
