Remarks that they need a lay brother to prepare food and look after the boarding house 'A coolie in charge ran away with knives, spoons, forks, etc...his successor left today. Besides our boys have a deep caste prejudice against coolies'. Continues, one or two scholastics or young priest from Ireland. Parents look for a good English curriculum... Natives have no confidence in native teachers.

Letters from English Fr Provincial Reginald Colley SJ, 31 Farm Street, London to Irish Fr Provincial James Murphy SJ concerning the special commission on Higher Studies. The commission was established to investigate how to adapt the courses offered to Scholastics to modern needs and difficulties.

An extensive file of letters from Fr John Ryan SJ to Irish Fr Provincial. As Superior of the Mission (11 February 1901 - 14 June 1908 & 9 April 1913 - 24 October 1917), Fr Ryan wrote to his superior, the Irish Fr Provincial on all matters concerning the administration (including visitations he made to the various communities) of the Mission and members of the Society living and working in see also Australia. Includes a letter to Fr J. Murphy SJ concerning Fr John O'Neill's health. Remarks '...there is only one proper course open to us viz. to send Fr O'Neill to Europe where he will have, at least, a chance of recovery...He is a source of constant anxiety, and we have no institution in Australia where we can put him, except the public Lunatic Asylum.' Remarks that following discussion with his Consultors he has decided to send Fr O'Neill home. (8 December 1902, 2pp). The entries relate to Church, community and school matters and events. The comings and goings of various members of the community are recorded, as is their state of health. Visits by bishops, the Father Provincial and other guests are also reported. Arrangements regarding meals and the consumption of alcohol (wine and punch) are dealt with extensively, and references to the ‘Long Table’ appear often. There are also references to the cost of provisions, including food and cigarettes and the weather. Building work, maintenance and repairs are recorded. Monies received for masses and donations are recorded. Many entries relate to feast days and special periods in the Church calendar, e.g. Holy Week and Christmas, and include information such as arrangements made for Masses, other ceremonies and confessions for the public and the community. In relation to the school, entries cover term dates, timetables, holidays, half days, examinations and results, retreats, school tours, sports fixtures and results, sports days theatricals, concerts, debates, sodalities etc. Of the many insertions in these journals, some are glued in and some are loose, and they relate to, amongst other subjects, distribution of holy communion, timetables for the celebration of Mass, novenas, Holy Week arrangements, concert programmes etc. Contemporary national and worldwide events are sometimes reported, e.g., ‘assassination of President Kennedy at about 6.30 p.m Irish time. A file relating to a request by Cardinal Moran, Archbishop of Sydney, St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney to Fr John Ryan SJ (Superior of the Mission) to make available a chaplain to the Federal Contingent to South Africa.

A file of letters written by Fr John McInerney SJ, Chaplain to the Australian Forces fighting in the Boer War, South Africa describing his work with the troops and his experiences of the war. Includes a letter describing the peace conference. Remarks that a telegram from Lord Kitchener announcing the peace deal was read to the troops '...many of our Australians regret the war is over. Their recent drive and its spoils have only whetted their appetite for the fray - They have smelt and tasted blood and they long for at least "another good cut in" - to use their own term. Our recent "drive" turns out to be the last of this long, costly and bloody war.'

Each entry is headed with the relevant Sunday’s Title, such as the ‘Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost’, the ‘First Sunday of Lent’ etc, or the name of the relevant Feast, ‘Palm Sunday’. Each volume contains announcements in relation to rosaries, benedictions, devotions, novenas, confessions, Mass times, arrangements for Feast Days. There are also announcements in relation to recent deaths in the parish, and requests for prayers for the repose of the souls of those recently deceased and of those whose anniversaries occur. Insert letter, incomplete, in 1912-1914 journal, from an Ursuline nun [Sullivan], and referencing Fr Robert giving a mission in Queenstown (21 August 1862).

If Miss Egan withdraws at any time from the Dominican Order she shall be at liberty to revoke all or any of the trusts, and the trustees shall transfer the trust fund to her.

A file relating to 'St Stephen's', the magazine of the University College, Dublin and the Catholic University School of Medicine, Cecilia Street, Dublin and the removal of the medallion from the cover of the magazine, and insertion of the Catholic University of Ireland. Includes a letter from Joseph Brennan, Honorary Secretary to the Representative Council, Catholic University School of Medicine to Fr William Delany SJ referring to the medallion. Remarks, ‘..it was not their (the Representative Council) intention to substitute a medallion of the Catholic University for the existing medallion. Their object simply was to remove the false impression conveyed by the wording of the medallion, that the magazine belonged exclusively or mainly to the students of University College, and was not the joint organ of the students of University College and of the Catholic University School of Medicine.’ (22 March 1906, 2pp). Fr William Delany SJ established St Stephen's, as a magazine for University College, Dublin, and not for the Catholic University of Ireland. Includes list of subscribers to 'St. Stephen's' (March 1906) and accounts (1905-06).

Includes a letter referring to the seismological observatory. Remarks that capable men are needed to take charge of the observatory '...Fr Pigot is doing his best to get away - to Japan I think - and in any case - though very capable - he is such a bundle of nerves - that he cannot deal properly with any assistant he engages to help him. In consequence of this and his own very indifferent health - the observatory work is hopelessly in arrears. Moreover for want of funds we have been unable to roof in properly the seismological tunnel...' (24 August 1911, 4pp). Many of the letters refer to Xavier College and the administration of the school e.g. teaching staff, subjects taught, equipment needed (laboratory/scientific materials), finances. Includes a letter referring to the Premiership in football '...which we won last Thursday from the Scotch - you would think it was a reversal of the Battle of the Boyne.' (26 August 1910, 2pp). Includes a letter enclosing the Rector's report of Xavier College, Kew (27 December 1911, 2 items). Includes a letter referring to the war. Remarks 'As I write from this side of the globe we hardly know whether the British Empire is still standing. We still hope the sea is clear - but we are really being kept in the dark. All we know is that Germany is pressing on and Namar has fallen. We know that the Holy Father and Father General are dead and Franz Joseph is dying.' (25 August 1914, 5pp). Includes a letter discussing the opening of Newman College. Remarks that the prestige of the Society is at stake and suitable men must be appointed to it, particularly the position of Rector. (17 see also June 1917, 7pp). Includes a letter referring to a crisis that has occurred over the opening of Newman College. Remarks that Fr Superior (Fr Ryan SJ) has raised queries over the amount of money to be paid to the Jesuits, a sum he (Fr Ryan) regards to be too little. Remarks 'The trouble is we cannot exactly see what Fr Ryan's position is. He has a vague fear that he is outwitted by Dr Mannix and a vague recollection of possible better terms from Dr Carr at a time when more money was expected to come in and when the cost of building was lower...You may remember that one of my reasons for pressing you to visit Australia was that I held that Fr Ryan was not the man to do business with Dr Mannix. There is a temperamental difference between them. Dr M. thinks Fr Ryan shifty and Fr Ryan thinks Dr. M. most exacting.' (15 October 1917, 6pp). Includes two letters referring to the appointment of Fr Power SJ to the position of Rector of Newman College and how this was achieved. Expresses his extreme disappointment and annoyance at being put in a very embarrassing situation. Points out that everybody assumed he (Fr O'Dwyer) would be appointed even though he accepts that no official confirmation of this was sent by Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ). Remarks 'Newman College Council met...only laymen were present. It was before Fr Power's name was disclosed to the public and I was greeted as Rector by the members...When Dr. M entered the room business was begun by asking for information re Rector. Then to the consternation of all he repeated your cable to him without any word to his council, without a hint to me, over the heads of the Mission CCs. I was publicly repudiated and humiliated not only by my own superiors (which might be considered part of the game) but by Dr M. acting as superior of Ours.' Concludes 'I have been rejected and snubbed so often by superiors and have always found myself so much better off as the result, that I have great trust in Providence. I should never have got to Australia if Fr J. Murphy had not turned me out of CWC (Clongowes Wood College) as a dangerous character. And I should not have got to Melbourne...if Fr Ryan had not declared me unfit for Riverview...All that does not prevent me from writing strongly...nor prevent me from saying again that my poor efforts for the Society in Australia deserved more consideration.' (23 February 1918, 3pp & 3 July 1918, 6pp).

A file of letters from Fr Thomas P Brown SJ (Mission Superior, 14 June 1908-9 April 1913) to Irish Fr Provincial concerning the Australian Mission and community matters in the various houses. Includes a letter written from St. Ignatius, Richmond, Melbourne referring to the Archbishop's decision to cut off the Greenwich district from the North Sydney district he assigned to the Society of Jesus. 'This invasion was a surprise to many who fondly believed that H.E. had promised not to cut off the Greenwich district provided we kept a Father at Loyola to attend to it. This condition was fulfilled.' (25 January 1911, 4pp). Includes a letter referring to Fr Pigot SJ and his trip to see also London. Remarks that Fr Pigot hopes to visit seismographic stations in Europe, and Japan 'What he hopes to gain by the tour it is not easy for an outsider to determine. He knows as much about seismographs as any of his contemporaries and the difference between one instrument and another finds a parallel, it seems to me, in tweedledum and tweedledee' (6 September 1911, 4pp). Includes notes from a meeting held at Richmond, Melbourne to discuss the possibility of closing one or more of the Australian Colleges (15 July 1912, 2pp).

McCurtin SJ, St Aloysius College, Milson's Point, Sydney to Irish Fr Provincial concerning his work as Rector of St. Aloysius College and the community who live there and general news from the Australian Mission (administration, finances, pupils, staff, extension to the college). Many of the letters emphasise the shortage of staff at St Aloysius College. Remarks 'Still our objection as regards staff is not owing to the dearth of men - but to the unequal distribution...it looks as if the place which makes his loudest noise gets all the best of the arrangements...' Asks Fr Provincial to relieve him of his job as Rector of the college (21 March 1916, 4pp).
