Letter from Eugene O'Curry, 5 Portland Street, Dublin to William Forbes Skene, Edinburgh, Scotland referring to extracts that Skene collected from O’Curry. Remarks that he (O'Curry) did not send them to Skene ‘...lest they may not be exactly what you would want...’. Refers to pedigrees of the kings of Scotland contained in the extracts and remarks ‘You seem to think lightly of (them)...’. Continues ‘...I think them very valuable as the Ms. is one of the close of the eleventh or beginning of the twelfth century and appears to have been got up with very great care and attention...’. Refers to a note written by Skene in which he indicates that the pedigrees can be found in a more authentic source. O'Curry expresses his interest in this information. Remarks that Irish historical scholars are ‘...neither mercenary nor jealous, but seek to establish truth...’. Concludes ‘...I wish to say that there is not now any acceptable Irish Ms. in Dublin that I have not carefully read and the value of which as a historical document, I do not clearly understand...’.

In 1814, a Jesuit community took over the vacant Poor Clare convent in Hardwicke Street, Dublin. St Francis College was established at Hardwicke Street in 1832 however it proved to be too small for this emerging school. New premises were needed and Belvedere House, Great Denmark Street was bought in 1841.

Irish Jesuit Mission bequest from Patrick Hedigan.

Documents, comprising encyclicals and open letters to all prelates, including those in Ireland, issued by Pope Pius IX. Includes an encyclical on the political upheavals in the Italian states, an appeal for support in defence of the Papal states (18 June 1859, 15pp), and a ‘Decretum’ re. the rights of religious orders, a copy of a decree regarding the receiving of novices, and the admittance to professions in the Society (28 January 1850; 2pp).

Volume of minutes of committee meetings of the Dublin Food Supply Society (DFSS), a society with which Fr Thomas Finlay SJ was associated and whose object was the supply of cheap food to the poor of Dublin in difficulties due to either the Great War or the ‘local Irish situation’. Fr Thomas Finlay SJ, who had previously worked with Sir Horace Plunkett in the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society, established the Dublin Food Supply Company (1916-1926) at a meeting in the Royal Hibernian Academy, Lincoln Place.

The following individuals became part of the Dublin Food Supply Company committee: Lady Frances Moloney (Chairperson) (in 1918, she became one of the founders of the Missionary Sisters of St Columban), Miss Conroy, Miss Janet Cunningham, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Cogan, Mrs O'Brien, Mr McKee, Mr Fallon, Mr Desmond O'Brien, Mr Cruise O'Brien, Mr Michael J. Dillon and Mr W.A. Ryan. It was agreed that 4 Killarney Street (later transferred to 10 Lower Gloucester Street) should be taken temporarily as a shop, from Monday 18 December 1916. The society had £137 in their account and Fr Tom Finlay SJ was able to source ten gallons of milk, Lady Moloney secured a half a ton of potatoes and Mr O'Brien, bags for the potatoes from IAWS. The milk crisis of 1917 resulted in the Corporation of Dublin requesting that the Dublin Food Supply Company take over the distribution of the milk supply previously provided by them. By 1918, depots where food and milk could be bought were located at: Grattan Street; Francis Street (later transferred to 88 Thomas Street); North King Street and Old Camden Street. By 1924, further properties were bought at Gloucester Place Upper; Middle Gardiner Street and No. 1 Pimlico, parish of St. Catherine, city of Dublin to ‘carry on business solely for the purpose of supplying to the poor, all or any manner of household supplies at such a price and no greater over and above the wholesale price as will cover rents and other costs of distribution’. In February 1925, the Dublin Food Supply Company was running a deficit and the falling off in trade due to the business depression resulted in the ceasing of operations in 1926.

Note from Fr. Kevin Laheen SJ explaining a note he received from Sr Bernadette, (Provincial of the Irish Sisters of Charity) ‘telling me that Fr John St. Leger was ordained in their community chapel in Stanhope Street in 1825 (16 June) by Archbishop Murray’. Explains that a plaque which was displayed recording this event in the chapel (dining room) has since been lost. He saw the plaque in 1952.

Copy of administration in relation to the estate of James Johnston Mullan, late of Sandymount Castle, Dublin, who died on 12 June 1939. Issued by the High Court of Justice; the Principal Probate Registry. States that the last will of Johnston, of which a copy is included, did not name any executor, and that on 3 October 1939 Letters of Administration of all and singular the personal estate of the deceased were granted to William Morgan Mullan, son of the deceased. Certifies that an Affidavit for Inland Revenue was delivered showing the gross value of Johnston’s personal estate within Ireland to be £2994.2.0 for the purpose of Estate Duty, and that the amount of £270.3.10 for Estate Duty and interest thereon has been paid.

The will of James Johnston Mullan bequeaths all of his real and personal estate to his son William Morgan Mullan and his daughter Kathleen Mullan in equal shares, but if the latter should marry or decide to live elsewhere she is to be paid the sum of £1,500. William Mullan to support and maintain Kathleen and James’ wife (their mother) and pay each of them the sum of £1 weekly during their lives, and in case of Kathleen’s marriage or removal, the sum of five hundred pounds each to be paid to his wife and son James Morgan of Stroud, Gloustershire (sic). Letter from Hester Marie, 15 Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Mother Mary Gabriel, Prioress, Carmelite Convent, Firhouse, Dublin concerning the death of her sister Nannie (Anne).

Holograph letter to Dr Michael Cox from Fr Gerard Manley Hopkins, in which he comments on the thesis of a book, or pamphlet, lent to him by Dr. Cox. The book in question was 'Arts and Industries in Ireland' by S.A. [Sarah Atkinson] (Dublin: M.H. Gill & Son: 1882), which contains two essays, one of which is ‘Irish Wool and Woollens, passages from the history of the staple trade’. Its thesis was that English interests had secured the suppression of the Irish woollen trade, thus contributing to the poverty of Ireland. Hopkins does not accept this – ‘Irish writers on their own history are naturally led to dwell on what in history is most honourable to Ireland…They are also led to dwell on what in history is most dishonourable to England…the most extensive…Irish woollen industry was frieze…this was never checked by English legislation…’.

Dr Cox, a university colleague of Fr Hopkins, was a distinguished Dublin physician, lecturer in the Medical School of the Catholic University Dublin and Examiner for the Royal University of Ireland.
S.A. was Sarah Atkinson, author of a Life of Mother Mary Aikenhead, Foundress of the Irish Sisters of Charity.

The letter along with another by Fr Hopkins (See J11/7) was presented to the then Editor of 'Studies' Fr Roland Burke Savage SJ by the late Fr Arthur Cox, son of the recipient. Both letters were published in 'Studies', Spring 1970 (Vol. LIX, No. 233) pp.19 - 25, with an explanatory introduction and notes by the then Editor, Fr Peter Troddyn SJ.

Letter from the Irish Fr Provincial Edmund O'Reilly SJ, Milltown Park, Dublin to [ ] concerning two fathers setting out from Ireland to establish the Australian Mission (Fr William Kelly SJ and Fr Joseph Lentaigne SJ). Refers to Fr Therry's brother in Cork who has agreed to co-operate in anyway so that the Jesuit fathers may secure their bequest.

Letter from James Duff, Liverpool to Rev. Matthew J. Gahan SJ, Hardwicke Street Chapel, Dublin seeking confirmation of Fr Gahan's wish to administer to the Catholic population on the Isle of Man. Remarks that he has been in contact with the Bishop who agreed to appoint Fr Gahan to the post as long as his own Bishop agrees.

Madame Chaponniére-Chaix doesn’t believe that the time is right for a Red Cross mission to Ireland (26 January 1923);

• copy of note ‘Projet Hayes Humanity Dublin’ which refers to Madame Chaponniére-Chaix and the establishment of the Red Cross in Ireland (In French), (nd.);

• leaflet entitled ‘The extreme penalty’ which details the words of Mr Eamon Aylward in relation to his involvement in disturbances in Kilkenny "The extreme penalty”: Mr. Eamon Aylward, in the document with his signature attached which has been found upon an irregular captured by the Kilkenny force, has lighted up, as by a lightning flash, the criminality of the militarist attack upon the people...but that such an order could be issued by a man blaspheming the honourable name of Irish Republican will reveal to the people the tyranny that they have escaped (1922);

• letter from Richard Mulcahy, Commander-in-Chief, Oglaigh na hEireann, Dublin to Miss Margaret MacNeill, Industrial Schools Office, Government Buildings apologising for keeping ‘those papers so long’ and ‘that the Red Cross people have been suitable replied to’ (25 January 1923);

• handwritten notes on the resignation Eoin Mac Neill from the boundary commission and events surrounding his candidacy for the university election of 1927;

Copies of two letters from Fr Alexander Kyan SJ to Dr. Scallan. The first refers to Scallan's letter of 13 September. Refers to his [Fr. Kyan's] brother Howard's removal to Dr Duncan's, and assures him that he has been a frequent visitor. Refutes the suggestion that his brother is being detained. (15 September 1859). In the second letter Fr Kyan requests that Dr Scallan should send him ‘no other impertinent letters’. (9 January 1860). There is also a note at the bottom of the page stating that Howard was removed from Dr Duncan’s on 29 December 1859, and that ‘James sailed for Liverpool’ on 16 January 1860.

Discusses the question of the ‘Dublin College’ and Fr Delany's involvement in the matter. Refers to the negative attitude of Cardinal McCabe to the latter, and to his (Delany's) extravagant tendencies in relation to the College. Believes that ‘the very best professors should be engaged (even Protestants, in cases where no Catholic professor was prominent)’. Suggests that the studies at Miltown be put ‘on a more satisfactory footing’, through the use of the various Jesuits that Fr Tuite has in Dublin, including Fr Finlay, who Fr Porter sent back to Ireland ‘after his grand act’. Asks if he has heard anything about the terna from Australia.
