States that neither Fr Callaghan nor any of the other surviving Irish ex-Jesuits are at liberty to dispose of their property in any other way but in favour of the Irish bishops. Expresses surprise and dismay at the latter’s actions and emphasises that his (Stone’s) letter to Troy was written in confidence. Claims that he knows of no ex-Jesuits who maintain that their Society is canonically re-established in the British Dominions. Refers to a ‘severe letter’ received by him from Cardinal Borgia in relation to the matter. Copy of letter from Fr Peter Kenney SJ to Fr Charles Plowden SJ. Deals with the issue of the misunderstanding surrounding the Pope’s supposed assent to the aggregation of Jesuits to Russia. Refers to the involvement of Fr Thomas Glover SJ, Fr Gaetano Angiolini SJ, Cardinal Gonsalvi, Fr Gabriel Grüber, the Emperor of Russia, and others. States that Fr Angiolini advises that some Irish novices should be sent over to Palermo to make their vows, and then sent back to Ireland, in order to ensure that the property of the Irish ex-Jesuits remained with the Society.

Copy of letter from Cardinal di Pietro to Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ. Refers to the appeal made by the prelates of Ireland to Rome in relation to the will of the late Fr Richard Callaghan. Claims that the latter, according to an oath sworn on 23 August 1793, should have left his property to Fr Betagh, and not to Stone. Demands that Stone transmit to Rome an authentic copy of the Pope’s alleged rescript, by which Callaghan believed himself to legitimately free to dispose of the funds of the ex-Jesuits in favour of Stone (In Italian). Letter appears on same document as a copy of the reply to it from Fr Stone, and a copy of an excerpt of a letter from Fr Stone to Archbishop Troy.

Two copies of a letter from Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ to Fr Mozzi at the Gesú in Rome. A note explains that ‘it being judged hazardous to direct it to Rome it was sent to Rotterdam in the autumn of 1808’ to be forwarded to the Fr General in St Petersburg. Refers to Archbishop Troy’s appeal to Rome in relation to the will of Fr Richard Callaghan, and reminds the Cardinal of the oath sworn by all English priests to renounce all pretensions of the Holy See to interfere in civil affairs within Great Britain. Also alludes to the dangers of such interference especially when the Holy See is subject to the rule of Napoleon Buonaparte. Discusses the will of Fr Callaghan in relation to the agreement made by Irish ex-Jesuits in 1793, and asserts that no promise was ever made to leave Jesuit property to the Irish prelates. Reminds him to send a book for the Prince of Butera. Refers to the landing of French troops, the defence effort by the Sicilians, and the subsequent surrender of some French, and the flight of others back to Naples, upon the arrival of the British troops. States that Paccanari ‘has taken a wife & walks the streets of Rome with her with shameless effrontery.’ Expresses the fear that the Irish have complained of him (Kenney) ‘for having led F. Stone astray’.

Copy of letter from Fr Charles Plowden SJ. Addressed to English prelates. Refers to the suppression of the Society, to the establishment of Stonyhurst as a seminary to supply missioners to other parts of the English province, and to the papal brief obtained by the College from Pope Pius VI. States that, in spite of this brief, restrictions were placed on the members of the College, which forced each of them to serve the mission in his own native vicariate, and prevented them from being presented to ‘a different V.A.’. Refers to reports spread by Sir Hippesley and others, which had a negative impact on Stonyhurst, and to other complaints against the institution, including that made by Dr Gregory Stapleton. States that a papal decree re-confirmed the rights of Stonyhurst, and explains that this document may not have been communicated to his (Plowden’s) present addressees.

Also refers to the death of the English Fr Provincial Charles Plowden SJ, and to Fr Scott’s report on how it happened. Reports that Fr Plowden’s body ‘lies in the middle of the church yard at Jougné’. Fr Tristram declares himself to be ‘well satisfied’ with Fr Carr, who, he believes, will ‘prove a worthy son of the Society’.

Reminds the latter of debts to be paid, and informs him of his activities in relation to the accounts, including the payment to Fr Jennesseaux of an amount of money. Begs to relinquish his role as agent. Encloses his correspondent’s account with the Rector of F[ ]bough (not included).

States that Mr Glover ‘still lingers at Rome’, and reports that luminous crosses have been visible for months over summits of the Masques of the Turks in a city in Bulgaria. Letters from Fr John Etheridge SJ, London & Liverpool to Fr [ ] SJ concerning a legal opinion he obtained on property belonging to the Society of Jesus in England. Remarks that counsel stated that the Society would become liable to the investigation of the Commissioners for Charitable Trusts. Continues '…I shall keep as quiet as I can and instruct our people that our properties belong to those individuals who are named in the deeds and can be disposed of by them as they see best, without any obligation of trust.'

Letter from John Henry Newman, writing from the Oratory, Birmingham, to Fr Murphy on the subject of the University choir. He regretfully informs Fr Murphy that it is the opinion of four professors, and apparently a good many others, that the singing of the principal soprano and the principal bass [the Macdermotts] is not good.

Asks Fr Walsh to reply soon to the Fr General in relation to ‘the Diocesan Seminary’; suggests that the Bishop might have changed his mind in relation to handing it over to the Society. Reports on the health of the Pope. Refers to the portraits and drawings of Fr Ffrench, which had not yet arrived in Dublin.

Letter from Fr Torquatus Armellini SJ, writing from the American College in Rome, to the Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Declines, with thanks, the latter's ‘offering’. Refers to events in Rome, and reports that the Fr General and others will not leave the country ‘till they see what can be done and where they may settle themselves.’ Announces that he is to stay in Rome for some time ‘for the communications with the Propaganda &c.’. Asks Fr. Walsh to send faculties to him to distribute.

Reports on the health of Mr Francis Ryan SJ (b.1844), and reports that he be removed to Ireland, so as to be near to a doctor. States that he has written to the [English] Fr Provincial ‘about the laybrother’, but he has not heard yet whether he may receive him. Adds that the Fr Provincial is proposing to send them [in St. Beuno's] ‘two of the superannuated Brothers’. Refers to the health of other residents: Hughes, O’Connor, O'Flynn and Daly. Suggests that his correspondent communicate with Fr (Robert) Whitty (Fr Provincial) in relation to ordinations of Irish men.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Florence, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Encloses a lithograph of Blessed Faber (not included), and offers to send a copy or two of the life of Fr B[also]. Reports on events in Florence, including the attempt by a mob to drive the Jesuits out. Announced that the decree ‘de Virtutibus’ is to be promulgated. Also refers to the promotion of Fr Tarquini SJ to the Cardinalate, which the Pope did ‘as a mark of esteem to the Society’ during their persecution .

Letter from Dr Cruise to Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ.States that he has examined Mr Higgins, and finds ‘no positive impediment to his entering upon the life of a Jesuit’.

Letter from Fr George Lambert SJ, writing from the Gesù in Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Writes to the latter at the request of the Fr General to draw the attention of Fr Walsh ‘to the great importance of avoiding anything which might give the Engl. Government a pretext to quarrel with us’. Adds that the prospects of the Society retaining their houses and churches decrease every day.

Encloses a protest that was read and handed in by Fr Armellini (included; in Italian), and states that the residents are to vacate the building on 3 November.

Encloses a photograph of a painting by Gagliardi Junior ‘and offered by F. Rossi to the Augustinian Father who delivered the panegyric of the Bd Peter at the Gesù’.

Refers to a letter from the latter, the subject of which Fr Armellini has communicated to the Fr General. Expresses the hope that Fr Walsh has by now received the painting and drawing of Fr Ffrench, by way of Miss Fleming. Adds that ‘[t]he professor shall not be sent’ until word comes from Fr. Walsh. Encloses small photographs of the portrait (not included). Contains note written by Fr Walsh regarding the content of the letter.

Acknowledges the receipt of the latter's letter, with enclosures, of 24 November. States that he has not yet heard of the arrival of Dr Conroy. Refers to events in Rome, and to a decree which deprived the Society of its houses and churches there. Also laments the effects of the situation on the Catholic schools.

Reports on the takeover of the Gesù by the Giunta, and states that the house is to be used as offices for the Artillery, Infantry and Cavalry. Refers to effect these events are having on the Fr General, and reports on the exodus of the residents from the house. Announces that he and Fr. Lambert are going to the English College. Refers also to the Roman College and the South American College. Refers to confusion in relation to the Pope’s rights over the Observatory. Reports that the Fr General gave him a letter from Fr Walsh, in which he refers to ‘the house in Stephen's Green’, and declares himself to be glad that Fr Walsh has accepted it, and hopes that ‘an energetic man devoted to study’ will be appointed as head.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Florence, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Asks the latter to post the enclosed letters (not included) to Frs Ronan and Kelly. States that the diplomas are to be posted that day, and that he sent Fr Walsh ‘a lithographed account of the suppression of the Gesù’ two days previously, and adds that he also sent one to Fr Gallwey. Refers to the University, and expresses the hope that it will be successful. Reports that the property of the Irish College outside the walls of Rome is advertised for sale by the Giunta.

Reports that he did not allow Br Brady to take his vows; that Br Flynn is working very well, and that Fottrell is ‘a very holy young man.’ Discusses the novitiate in general, and claims that St. Ignatius never intended a novitiate so contemplative.

Antony Baldinucci SJ, saying that he ‘possessed the theological and cardinal virtues in grada heroico’. Asks Fr Walsh to communicate to him details in relation to the proposed painting of Blessed Peter Faber, and asks where it is to be sent. Reports that the Fr General is in Fiesole at present.

Gives an account of his own visit to Rome, including his attendance at a dinner in the Irish College on St. Patrick’s Day. Remarks that they have heard nothing from Milltown since coming to Fiesole. Refers to the success of the new Master of Novices.

Reports that the Fr General has decided to help Dr Ricard with his college; asks Fr Walsh to find someone to take charge of it, and who would be competent to teach philosophy and theology in ‘a new colonial establishment’. Expresses his admiration for Bishop Ricard and his satisfaction at the thought of a new foreign mission. Refers to the problems with the Bishop of Salford and the opening of a school in Manchester.

Reports that he met Cardinal Cullen while in Rome, and adds that he has heard that the latter had written a letter to Rome critical of the Jesuits in ‘the Manchester affair’, which was settled in favour of the Bishop of Salford. Refers to Dr Ricards’ mission in South Africa. Sends his correspondent two prospectuses of Fr Garrucci’s work on ancient Christian Art. Admits that he had no opportunity of speaking to Fr Angelini in relation to Blessed Berchman's letter. Undertakes to put his correspondent’s letter before the Fr General, and gives his opinion on the opening of letters in the colleges of the Society, and the allowing of scholastics to go out alone. Suggests that his correspondent should send his boys and scholastics to take degrees at the London University.
