Fr McGrath traces the use of Killiney Castle by the Society of Jesus (nd, 1p). Includes a letter from Mary Purcell to Fr McGrath concerning the sale of Killiney Castle to the St John of God Brothers, France. Another property is also referred to by Miss Purcell who discovered this reference in a minute of a council meeting of the Brothers of St John of God but it is unclear if this other property also belonged to the Society of Jesus. The St John of God Brothers did not continue negotiations with the Society (18 August 1977, 2pp).

Information on Fr Aubrey Gwynn’s great-grandfather’s cousin, John Gwynne (1754 – 1828/9), founder of a ‘charitable endowment Institution, Derry.’ Includes letters from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland to Fr Gwynn (30 June, 8 July 1975, 2 items. 1p. each) and note given to Fr Gwynn by Archbishop George Simms (July 1974, 1p.) (John Gwynne bequeathed a large sum of money to found a charitable endowment in Derry known as the Gwynne Institution, for the education of boys whose parents could not afford to give them a suitable education. The money was to be distributed equally among Protestants and Catholics. (from Burke’s Irish Family Records, 19[74], p. 53) )

Historical note on Rathfarnham castle. Includes a postcard with a note by Fr Richard Coyne SJ concerning the historical note and remarks that he left a copy with Mrs Carter, 12 Doddervale. Continues 'The housekeeper asked if I were from the castle and if I wanted to see the picture...The housekeeper said they were expecting another priest...to call to see the picture. I had mentioned at my last visit that Fr Rector might be interested in seeing it.' (2 September 1972, 1 item).

A file relating to Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ missionary work in Malta. Includes documents relating to religious instruction of Catholics, descriptions of clerical controversy, disputes with Protestants, conversions of Protestants to Catholicism, preaching, Catholic education, addresses presented to the Governor of Malta, Fr Esmonde's Journal describing his time in Malta, correspondence. Letters are addressed to Fr Esmonde at San Calcedonia, outside Valletta. This house belonged to the Sicilian Province and Malta had a close connection with the Sicilian Province. Note: at least 50% of the documents are written in Italian.

Documents concerning Archbishop McQuaid’s objections to the formation of a Sandymount-Ballsbridge group of Muintir na Tíre and Fr Edward J Coyne’s involvement with the establishment of such a group (See also ADMN/3/29; 37; 39; 57). ‘I am not convinced that this Association has yet proved that it deserves a place in this Diocese, in the country or in the City. Therefore, I have not sanctioned the formation of any group in the Diocese. I should be grateful, if you could give me any help in understanding the Sandymount- Ballsbridge movement.’ (6 November 1941,1p). Includes correspondence between the Archbishop, Irish Fr Provincial and Fr Coyne on the matter. A file relating to the controversy between Dr Edward Thomas O'Dwyer, Bishop of Limerick and Mungret College concerning the admission of lay boys to the College. The file contains manuscript material written by Fr Thomas Morrissey SJ. In a summary he remarks that the Bishop saw the presence of lay students at Mungret 'as a threat to his seminary' (nd, 1p). Includes correspondence, and prospectus for Mungret College, 1882, Annual reports of the Irish Apostolic School, Mungret, 1889 and 1895.

Letters, telegrams, memoranda and notes relating to Belgian refugees in Ireland. Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ was a member of the Distribution Committee ‘appointed by the Local Government Board to look after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian Refugees arriving in Dublin’. Most of the letters comprise offers to house refugees or concern schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually. Includes:
– letter from Dr Bernard Coyne, Bishop of Elphin (1913-1926) to Lady Moloney seeking her assistance in the securement of a disused barracks in order to provide shelter for Belgian refugee families (21 Oct. 1914, 1p.);
– bills from drapers and household stores for items purchased for the refugees;
– letters relating to troubles between Protestants and the Catholic refugees in Portadown;
– letters to Fr Nolan from refugees and members of the Belgian Refugees Committee;
– lists of names and locations of refugees in Ireland and names and addresses of people who housed refugees.

On 17 October 1914, the Father Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus, Thomas V. Nolan, received a letter from the Local Government Board to go down to the North Wall at 7.30am on the 18th and meet the 100 Belgian refugees ‘and one hundred each of the following days’. This was due to ‘a few of your Order, who speak Flemish’. Subsequently, the Irish Provincial became a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of refugees arriving in Ireland. The Irish Jesuits received offers to house the refugees and organised schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually.
