Remarks that he would normally discuss such a matter directly with Fr Coyne or Fr Rector at Milltown 'But relations upon points of mutual interest between Milltown and ourselves have proved so delicate at times that it has seemed wise to lay the matter before your Reverence...'

Discusses political matters, remarks that the Corn Bill '...is safe after last night's division.' Continues 'If it be finally settled on Friday, the coercion bill division will take place that night but at any rate on Monday. A small majority against ministers is considered certain, but I find it believed that Peel will stay in though beaten. I need not say how glad we shall be if it be so. Peel would then dissolve and in the new parliament the Whigs, if successful, would be as weak as we could wish them.'

Continues 'I am still very strongly of opinion that the rejection of that Petition ought to be followed up, and that quick, with an address somewhat like what I sent you a draft of - and that the address ought to be- not to mankind in general, but to the Emperor of the French or to the French people.'

Remarks how much she dislikes it '...it is only a hasty impressionist sketch roughly and crudely done. In some parts it is clever no doubt the parts where Mr Barry O'Brien is well to the front and indeed one troubles to think what Sir Charles Russell would have done without him. It was he who was the author of the Parnell speech, that is clear-conceited little owl!'

Remarks 'I have just returned from the court after hearing the end of "the speech" and my head is so full I can hardly speak or write...I feel I can never thank God enough that I have lived to see this day. My Darling has had a fearful task to accomplish and he has done it well...' Continues '...I believe he has raised the Irish cause to a position which it never before held in the eyes of the people of England.' Describes the packed court room and the congratulations she received after the speech 'Dear old Mrs Gladstone caught my hand in both of hers and said "it was inspiration; I believe it has all been done by prayers" - just as a Catholic might say.'

Letter to Fr Gerald Manley Hopkins SJ from Cardinal John Henry Newman, following Fr Hopkins's letter for the Cardinal's birthday in which Fr Hopkins commented on the state of the country. The Cardinal replies, ‘Your letter is an appalling one, but not on that account untrustworthy. There is one consideration however, which you omit. The Irish Patriots hold that they never have yielded themselves to the sway of England and therefore never have been under her laws, and never have been rebels. This does not diminish the force of your picture, but it suggests that there is no help, or remedy. If I were an Irishman, I should be (in heart) a rebel. Moreover, to clinch the difficulty the Irish character and taste is very different from the English.’

The latter's successor is likely to be Fr Edward Donovan SJ. Acknowledges receipt of two copies of Fr Curtis' book. Adds that the Fr General was happy to hear of the success of Clongowes in the Intermediate examination, and is anxious to know how the scholastics fared in the University Exam.

Suggests that Fr Browne be sent there too.

Believes that ‘the very best professors should be engaged (even Protestants, in cases where no Catholic professor was prominent)’. Suggests that the studies at Miltown be put ‘on a more satisfactory footing’, through the use of the various Jesuits that Fr Tuite has in Dublin, including Fr Finlay, who Fr Porter sent back to Ireland ‘after his grand act’. Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Thanks his correspondent for ‘the paper & for the good news’. Sends the congratulations of the Fr General, who was particularly pleased by the part played by Fr Delany. Hopes that ‘the business of the college may be brought to an equally favourable termination’. Refers to the case of a member of the Limerick community, whose removal is left to the discretion of Fr Weld's correspondent. Adds that the Fr General is anxious that the man in question should be removed as his behaviour could cause scandal. Also refers to the ‘Montgret lease’, and states that if this Limerick diocesan seminary succeeds it ‘well may lead the way to very important work for the Society in Ireland’. Discusses the importance of helping the development of the Australian province, and refers to the sending of Frs Thomas Keating and Joseph Brennan there.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Refers to the latter's letter on 12 March, and addresses some of the points in it. Refers to Fr Tuite's proposals in relation to Montgret, and passes on the Father General's authorisation to send Fr Brennan to Australia. Also discusses the Terna for Australia, and an offer to the Society of 10 acres of the Catholic Reserve. With regard to the question of the New Zealand mission raised by Fr Dalton in his letter, asks Fr Tuite's opinion on the proposed removal of the missioners from there to Australia. Asks for a copy of the Irish Catholic Directory for 1882.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Gives an outline of the reasons that the Fr General accepted ‘Montgret’ in Limerick, viz. he wishes to put the Apostolic School in Limerick ‘on a firm foundation’, and to provide a seminary for the Bishop's students. Assures Fr Tuite that the Fr General is aware of the current financial difficulties experienced by the Irish Province. Refers to the Zambesi mission, which will be headed by Fr Ronan, and suggests that the lay brother staff of Montgret be recruited from among the candidates for the mission. Adds that the Fr General is also very eager that the Irish province’s plans for a Dublin College come to fruition.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Announces that he has decided to send [Thomas] Manning on the Zambesi mission, and asks Fr Tuite to send him to Louvain. Reports that a new edition of the Epitome Instituti is almost completed and advises Fr Tuite to order copies for the members of the Irish Province. Announces that he leaves the following day for Gibraltar, and afterwards goes to India ‘on some business of the Society’.

Letter from George Tyrrell, Catholic Church, Richmond, Yorkshire, England to Miss Russell sympathising over the death of her father, Charles Russell. Remarks 'Though there was no necessity whatever for such repetition he insisted on the exhausting task of making a complete review of his life, being quite convinced that the doctors could not save him...'

Letter from Sr Carroll, Convent of Mercy, Mobile, Alabama, USA to Sr Mary Baptist (Katherine) Russell sympathising over the death of Lord Russell of Killowen (brother of Sr Russell). Remarks 'what made the shock greater for me was the fact that I had never heard of his being weak or ailing...'

Letter from Charles Russell, Chateau Frontenac, Quebec, Canada to [ ] concerning his visit to Canada. Remarks that a University conferred the degree of L.L.D. on him. Concludes 'How Ellen (Charles Russell's wife) will descend from her semi-regal state when she once more sets foot on British soil I know not!'

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Collegio Romano, Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he met Cardinal Cullen while in Rome, and adds that he has heard that the latter had written a letter to Rome critical of the Jesuits in ‘the Manchester affair’, which was settled in favour of the Bishop of Salford. Refers to Dr Ricards’ mission in South Africa. Sends his correspondent two prospectuses of Fr Garrucci’s work on ancient Christian Art. Admits that he had no opportunity of speaking to Fr Angelini in relation to Blessed Berchman's letter. Undertakes to put his correspondent’s letter before the Fr General, and gives his opinion on the opening of letters in the colleges of the Society, and the allowing of scholastics to go out alone. Suggests that his correspondent should send his boys and scholastics to take degrees at the London University.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he has come into possession of ‘some good relics’, and undertakes to send some to Ireland. Refers to Fr Carbery's health, and asserts that a new rector for Clongowes should be appointed as soon as possible. Also refers to Fr Ronan, and the decorations in his church, and to [W] Lynch. Comments on the fact that ‘someone in England has written strongly against the London University’.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Confirms that the letters which the latter referred to had arrived, and refers to the travel plans of Fr Kelly and Fr. Mathew. Also refers to Dr Ricard's mission in England. Reports on a dispute with the Bishop of Salford (Herbert Vaughan) in relation to the opening of a school of the Society in Manchester. Gives an account of his own visit to Rome, including his attendance at a dinner in the Irish College on St. Patrick’s Day. Remarks that they have heard nothing from Milltown since coming to Fiesole. Refers to the success of the new Master of Novices.

Reports that the Fr General has decided to help Dr Ricard with his college; asks Fr Walsh to find someone to take charge of it, and who would be competent to teach philosophy and theology in ‘a new colonial establishment’. Expresses his admiration for Bishop Ricard and his satisfaction at the thought of a new foreign mission. Refers to the problems with the Bishop of Salford and the opening of a school in Manchester.

Gives the Fr General's answer to Fr Walsh’s query in relation to the saying of Masses. Reports that he said Mass in the rooms of St Ignatius.
