We have received no information whatever on this subject, and only know that three of you are actually in Dublin'. Remarks that both himself and Fr St. Leger have been ordained. Concludes 'Give me some account of your situation, employment etc. - but remember I do not mean to gratify curiosity; I only wish as much as may satisfy my affection and regard for you all and my zeal for the cause in which you have been the first to embark. Storms may assail you, but you know they are a distinctive mark of every good undertaking.'

Typescript copy of original holograph letter of Fr Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ to Dr Michael F. Cox (31 March 1887) commenting on the thesis of the pamphlet on the Irish woollen industry by Sarah Atkinson. ‘I now return your pamphlet with thanks…I more than ever note the selfishness of the legislation of 1699 etc., but I also more clearly see that it goes but a very little way to explaining the poverty in Ireland…’ Comments on a paper by Rev. William Cunningham (a distinguished economic historian), from which he lists a number of ‘relevant facts’ and concludes ‘The above shews a picture of selfishness and shortsighted folly, but it also fails to shew the cause of Ireland’s want of commercial prosperity. So far as there is blame Irishmen must be in great part to blame for that.’

With note on top left corner by Fr Peter Troddyn SJ (Editor of 'Studies'), ‘Copy typed from original (which is mislaid at Feb 1970)’ i.e. this copy was made by Fr Roland Burke Savage SJ about 1965 when he received the two letters from Fr Arthur Cox, son of Dr. Michael F. Cox. The letter published in 'Studies' was taken from this typescript copy as the original holograph letter had, by that time, been lost. Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Reports that he has just written by direction of the Fr General to Fr Denis Murphy SJ. Conveys to Fr Tuite the Fr General's permission to accompany his brother to Rome, and also to release Fr Thomas Kelly SJ from his office of Rector. The latter's successor is likely to be Fr Edward Donovan SJ. Acknowledges receipt of two copies of Fr Curtis' book. Adds that the Fr General was happy to hear of the success of Clongowes in the Intermediate examination, and is anxious to know how the scholastics fared in the University Exam.

Letter from Edmond Downing SJ, Loreto Abbey, Rathfarnham, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial concerning an item published in the 'Irish Citizen' concerning remarks he made during the course of a lecture. Remarks that he wishes to address the situation and asks permission to do so.

Letter from Mr Francis Bergin, Civil Engineer, Architect and Estate Surveyor to Fr William Delany SJ, 35 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin regarding architectural plans for University hall. Expresses his surprise at another set of plans being obtained from a different architect. Remarks ‘...in the course of my professional experience I never heard of a second architect being employed to furnish plans...without the knowledge of the man who was first engaged to do so.’. Remarks that he could have altered the plans to suit Fr Delany’s specifications and fears that his reputation may have been affected because of the incident.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Reports on a ‘very serious charge’ against Fr [Joseph] Clery in Australia. He is to be dismissed if the charge is substantiated. Refers to the terna for the new Superior in Australia, and to the ‘University Reserve’. Asks Fr Tuite what has been done about Fr Murphy's expedition to America, and about studies at Milltown Park. Adds that Fr Chambellan has recalled Fr René.

Letter from Fr Edward J. Coyne SJ, Director of Extra-Mural Studies at UCD, to Patrick Kavanagh re. the latter's series of Extra-Mural lectures. Asks Kavanagh for “some idea of the type of poems [he intends to read] and the general line of remarks...I am delighted to hear you are in better health and also that the Muse has returned to you, even ina violent way”.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Conveys Fr General’s opinion that is more important that Fr Finlay should be installed as a professor of philosophy in the Dublin College than be retained as Prefect of Studies in Tullabeg. Refers to Fr Browne who his going to his Tertianship, and informs Fr Tuite that Fr Keating has been allowed to go to Hadzor, Droitwich [for/after] his retreat. Suggests that Fr Browne be sent there too.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Urges the latter to reconsider his decision not to send any novices to the University that year. Reports that Fr Finlay’s grand act was received very well in Spain, and suggests that he be appointed to teach philosophy in place of Fr Baron. Asks again about the terna for a successor to Fr Dalton.

Letter from John Kells Ingram, 34 Trinity College, Dublin to Dr Charles Russell concerning a meeting of the friends of Dr George Petrie who decided that a deputation should visit the Lord Lieutenant to appeal for a pension for Dr Petrie's family. Asks if Dr Russell would be part of the deputation. Includes a list of those already part of the deputation.

Letter from Mr Vaughan Dempsey SJ, Rathfarnham Castle, County Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ concerning his brother in England who was wounded in the trenches. Asks Fr Provincial's permission to visit him in hospital before he returns to the trenches.

Letter from Eugene O'Curry, 5 Portland Street, Dublin to William Forbes Skene, Edinburgh, Scotland referring to extracts that Skene collected from O’Curry. Remarks that he (O'Curry) did not send them to Skene ‘...lest they may not be exactly what you would want...’. Refers to pedigrees of the kings of Scotland contained in the extracts and remarks ‘You seem to think lightly of (them)...’. Continues ‘...I think them very valuable as the Ms. is one of the close of the eleventh or beginning of the twelfth century and appears to have been got up with very great care and attention...’. Refers to a note written by Skene in which he indicates that the pedigrees can be found in a more authentic source. O'Curry expresses his interest in this information. Remarks that Irish historical scholars are ‘...neither mercenary nor jealous, but seek to establish truth...’. Concludes ‘...I wish to say that there is not now any acceptable Irish Ms. in Dublin that I have not carefully read and the value of which as a historical document, I do not clearly understand...’.
