Letter from Dr John Thomas Troy, Archbishop of Dublin to Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ, English Provincial. Refers to collections for the rebuilding of ‘more than one hundred Chapels in different parts of the Kingdom’, most of which were destroyed during the Rebellion. Refers to letters shown to him by ‘Mr. [Richard] Callaghan’ from Fr Gabriel Grüber in which the latter styles himself ‘Praepositus Generalis Societatis Iesu’ and announces that the Society is ‘perfectly re-established by the Holy See’. Expresses his doubts in this regard. Remarks, 'No one more sincerely deplored the suppression of the Society that I did, nor wishes more anxious for its reestablishment'.

Letter from Mr Charles Aylmer SJ, Palermo, Italy to Fr Matthew Gahan SJ, 14 Clarendon Street, Dublin describing life amongst the community in Palermo and his work. Refers to Fr Gahan's work in Ireland. Remarks 'You cannot but be well persuaded of the interest we must all take in history of the commencement and progress of our little Irish Province. We have received no information whatever on this subject, and only know that three of you are actually in Dublin'. Remarks that both himself and Fr St. Leger have been ordained. Concludes 'Give me some account of your situation, employment etc. - but remember I do not mean to gratify curiosity; I only wish as much as may satisfy my affection and regard for you all and my zeal for the cause in which you have been the first to embark. Storms may assail you, but you know they are a distinctive mark of every good undertaking.'

Another letter is written by James Patrick McDonnell on the reverse concerning St. Andrea. It would seem (the letter is almost indecipherable) that this second letter also concerns the noviceship in Rome.

Letter from James Duff, Liverpool to Rev. Matthew J. Gahan SJ, Hardwicke Street Chapel, Dublin seeking confirmation of Fr Gahan's wish to administer to the Catholic population on the Isle of Man. Remarks that he has been in contact with the Bishop who agreed to appoint Fr Gahan to the post as long as his own Bishop agrees.

Letter from Bishop Penswick, Liverpool to Fr Matthew Gahan SJ, Isle of Man concerning a visit he had intended to make to the island. Remarks that because the habeas corpus act has not been sanctioned by the legislators he is going to postpone his visit. Remarks 'I have often thought of you and even expected to be in a situation to relieve your wants; whenever my hopes are realised I will not overlook you.'

Letter from Fr Patrick Meagher SJ, writing from Gardiner Street, Dublin, to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, Vice Provincial, St Stanislaus College Tullabeg, King's County (County Offaly). Refers to the case of a young [novice] – ‘H.T.’, who is suffering from some sort of illness. Reports that he (Meagher) consulted a surgeon on the state of the man’s health. Reports that he received a letter that morning from Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ in Rome, who wrote about the church re-decoration in which he was involved, and also, more extensively, about a lecture given in Rome, which cast aspersions on the Catholic clergy of Ireland. Also refers to a letter he received from Fr Aylmer. Describes preparations for the ‘Festival’, including the recruiting of clergy to say Mass. Reports on the progress of building work also.

Letter from Rev. Henry Young, Mount Carmel Convent, Blackrock, County Dublin to Rev. D. Nolan, Carlow concerning the consecration of Right Rev. Dr. Griffith. Refers to copies of Latin prayers for the mass. Remarks that he gathered the prayers together himself with help from Mr. Meagher.

Suggests that the latter hold his Consultation at Clongowes, and that it be deferred until after Easter. Refers to the books brought back from Paris by Mr O'Grady, and asks Fr Bracken to let him know which ones to keep. Reports on a Novena he participated in, and also on the exercise he has been taking recently.

Letter from William Forbes Skene to Eugene O'Curry, 32 Bayview Avenue, Dublin thanking him for information received on the Book of Lecan. Refers to transcripts he (Skene) wishes to send to O'Curry and asks him to ‘...ascertain if it is the same as the extract taken from the Book of Ballymote...’. Discusses how the transcripts should be dispatched. Concludes by asking O'Curry to point out any further references to the history of Scotland, the highlanders and the genealogy of their clan that O'Curry may have discovered in the Irish Manuscripts.

From Fr William Stack Murphy SJ, St Mary’s, Lebanon, Kentucky, U.S.A. to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ. Thanks him for the books that were brought out by Dr Litton. Refers to the fact that Fr Peter Kenney SJ had been appointed Rector of Palermo. Asks Fr Bracken to arrange for a subscription to be made to the 'London Tablet'. Refers to the Teetotalism and Partial Abstinence campaign in the US. Answers Daniel O'Connell’s views on America’s tradition of slavery. Gives a brief outline of the establishment of the school (St Mary’s in Kentucky).

Letter from Eugene O'Curry, 5 Portland Street, Dublin to William Forbes Skene, Edinburgh, Scotland referring to extracts that Skene collected from O’Curry. Remarks that he (O'Curry) did not send them to Skene ‘...lest they may not be exactly what you would want...’. Refers to pedigrees of the kings of Scotland contained in the extracts and remarks ‘You seem to think lightly of (them)...’. Continues ‘...I think them very valuable as the Ms. is one of the close of the eleventh or beginning of the twelfth century and appears to have been got up with very great care and attention...’. Refers to a note written by Skene in which he indicates that the pedigrees can be found in a more authentic source. O'Curry expresses his interest in this information. Remarks that Irish historical scholars are ‘...neither mercenary nor jealous, but seek to establish truth...’. Concludes ‘...I wish to say that there is not now any acceptable Irish Ms. in Dublin that I have not carefully read and the value of which as a historical document, I do not clearly understand...’.

Also reports on political and social issues, including Daniel O’Connell’s activities in relation to Repeal, the campaign against landlords, the Lord Lieutenant’s policies, Peel’s new taxes. Refers to Belvedere, which he visited on a recent trip to Dublin, as ‘a splendid Mansion’. Also refers to a letter received from ‘Mr. Cooper of Calcutta’, which gives news of that part of the world.

Announces the names of those who have gone to Tronchiennes that year. Reports on his own activities and on Tullabeg. Also refers to the Repeal campaign. Doubts that the plans for a residence in Galway will come to fruition. Refers to the foundation of a College for Foreign Missions in Dublin, and announces the death of Fr Kearney. Asks if his correspondent might be disposed to go to Colombia to educate and carry out missionary work, as the population of Bogotà wish European Jesuits to do. Also refers to the political situation in Ireland.

Skene queries an observation made by O'Curry and remarks ‘...(there) must be some mistake as there never was a Murray of [Lennox]. Requests O'Curry to send him the original word.

Letter from Archbishop D. Murray, Dublin to Dr Charles Russell concerning Dr Russell's continuing stay in Rome. Remarks 'The circumstances which you mention are quite sufficient to justify your absence from Maynooth during the remainder of the present Academical year...'.

Letter from James Hardiman to Eugene O'Curry, Royal Irish Academy House, Grafton Street, Dublin regarding an extract from King James I’s grant to John Moore of the castle of Bries, county Mayo. Remarks that he cannot find the document ‘...which states him to have been the nephew and heir of the Chief, but I have seen it...’.

Letter from George Petrie, 67 Rathmines Road, Dublin to Dr Charles Russell concerning a query made by Russell about sepulchral inscriptions. Remarks '...I have never seen the names of two individuals included in the same request for a prayer, though I have met with several headstones on which the names of two persons were inscribed.' Continues to discuss the topic citing examples.

Letter from Eugene O'Curry, 2 Portland Street North, Dublin to Rev. John Henry Newman, Rector of the Catholic University, Dublin regarding an offer of the Professorship of Archaeology at the University. Remarks ‘...I would gladly accept (it), if the term does not mean more than I could honestly undertake.’. Explains that he is working under a Royal Commission as a co-translator of the Brehon Laws and also with the Irish Archaeological and Celtic Society, to translate and edit an ancient Irish Law Tract, the Battle of Moylena.

Letter from Charles Savile Roundell, The Castle, Dublin to Dr Charles Russell concerning a report on an Institution [in Dublin]. Remarks 'I made inquiry about the institution in question from liberal friends whom I could trust and find that though the wording of the report might well offend the [ ] susceptibilities of R. Catholics any intention of doing so or of proselytising any of the children was [ ] to the minds of the [ ].'

Letter from John Henry Newman, writing from the Oratory, Birmingham, to Fr Murphy on the subject of the University choir. He regretfully informs Fr Murphy that it is the opinion of four professors, and apparently a good many others, that the singing of the principal soprano and the principal bass [the Macdermotts] is not good.

Letter from John Henry Newman, writing from 6 Harcourt Street, Dublin to Fr [Francis] Murphy [SJ]. Puts ‘the decision of the matter’ into the latter’s hands, and mentions the salary [for directing the choir]. Also suggests that he procure and organ.

Letter from Eugene O'Curry, Royal Irish Academy, Dublin to T. D. Mc [ ], Montreal, Canada regarding a draft of $100 sent to O'Curry to purchase books. O'Curry apologises for the delay explaining that some volumes he wished to purchase were not available and that he fell ill on two occasions. O'Curry refers to the death of his son in 1857 and his wife in 1858. Concludes that he is still working on the Brehon Laws and that he has published the first twenty one lectures given by him to the Catholic University.

Letter from Dr W. Scallan to Fr Alexander Kyan SJ. Voices his concern over the further detention of Fr Kyan’s brother in a ‘Lunatic Asylum’, and states that he wishes to withdraw the authorisation which he originally gave for his detention.

Letter from Townly W. Hardiman, Solicitor and Agent of Mrs L. B. Hamlin, 22 Bachelors Walk, Dublin to the executors of the will of A. N. Skelly concerning the affairs of W. N. Skelly and premises in Drogheda. Refers to the payment of rents due on the premises and gives notice to the executors of the will that they are liable for the rent and responsible for keeping the premises in good repair.

Letter from Dr W. Scallan to Fr Alexander Kyan SJ. Refers to a previous letter of 13 September 1859 and asks Fr Kyan to inform him of his [Kyan's] brother's present address, and whether he is being detained as ‘a lunatic’.

Letter from Dr W Scallan to Fr [ ]. Refers to the concerns he has in relation to the detention of Fr Alexander Kyan's brother. States that he may make an application to the Queen’s Bench regarding the matter. Encloses letters, which he hopes will explain the matter further (not included).

Letter from Dr W Scallan to Fr [ ]. Refers to the latter’s reply to his letter of 19 January. Defends himself and his actions with regard to his dealings with Fr Kyan. Claims that he advised 'a course of extreme liberality towards Rev A Kyan in the recent events', and states that the latter ought to be grateful to him (Scallan). Asks for the return of the letters he sent, and directs his addressee's attention to the pamphlet, which he encloses (not included).

Copy of letter from Howard Kyan to Dr Scallan. Assures the latter that he is in good health, and is at liberty to go anywhere he wishes, having left Dr Duncan's some time previously. States that when his sister-in-law has become reconciled to her husband he shall be ‘very happy to see her’.

Copies of two letters from Fr Alexander Kyan SJ to Dr. Scallan. The first refers to Scallan's letter of 13 September. Refers to his [Fr. Kyan's] brother Howard's removal to Dr Duncan's, and assures him that he has been a frequent visitor. Refutes the suggestion that his brother is being detained. (15 September 1859). In the second letter Fr Kyan requests that Dr Scallan should send him ‘no other impertinent letters’. (9 January 1860). There is also a note at the bottom of the page stating that Howard was removed from Dr Duncan’s on 29 December 1859, and that ‘James sailed for Liverpool’ on 16 January 1860.

Quotes from a letter from the Father General on the subject of the serving of punch to scholastics. Also refers to the wearing of watches by novices.

Letter from Eugene O'Curry, Brehon Law Office, Trinity College Dublin to Dalton regarding a proof sent to by Stokes to O'Curry. Apologises for the delay in replying. O'Curry indicates a number of mistakes and discusses some corrections.

John Callan, S.J., Church of St. Francis Xavier's, Dublin concerning arrears of Quit Rent due on premises in Drogheda belonging to the estate of the late Mr. W. Skelly. Remarks that he is now arranging to have the outstanding amounts paid to the Inland Revenue Office in Drogheda.

Note from Lady Margaret Domvile to the Irish Fr Provincial Joseph Lentaigne SJ. Informs the latter that her husband is anxious to engage a Jesuit private chaplain who is English by birth. Asks if Fr Lentaigne would consent to recall Fr Costa from Malta. Encloses a letter from Fr Ryan (not included). Includes a note: ‘F. Costa was refused, as can't live out of Community’.

Suggests that the latter should apply to the Irish Fr Provincial for permission for Fr Costa to return from Malta to act as chaplain to Lady Margaret Frances Domville of Santry House. A word or phrase has been cut out of this letter.

Refers to Fr Therry's brother in Cork who has agreed to co-operate in anyway so that the Jesuit fathers may secure their bequest.

Letter from Rev. Henry Young, St Joseph's to his cousin Rev. Henry Lynch concerning a small bottle of water. Remarks that the water might have been '...distilled from the bones or other relicks of St. Nicholas of Bari. Remarks that he was a curate in St. Nicholas's new church in Kinsealy and it was to this church that the bottle of water was brought by a Rev. William.' Refers to the death of Rev. James and a parcel of papers including a manuscript of Bellarmin's Catechism. Remarks that he would like the manuscript to be copied '...which I shall willingly do but gradually and scrupulous by following James's copy with corrections before me for copying any work imprints more the subject on the mind than hasty reading.'

Letter from Ulick Joseph Bourke, President of St Jarlath's College, Tuam to Fr Robert Kelly SJ. Refers to a matter discussed by him and Fr Kelly when the latter was on a visit, and relates that he brought it up with Archbishop McHale, who agreed to give him another formula of approbation for Fr Kelly.

Letter from Dr Bartholomew Woodlock, Catholic University of Ireland, 86 St Stephen's Green, Dublin to Dr Charles Russell asking Dr. Russell to recommend a friend (Alfred Barrett) to Lord O'Hagan in connection with the new legislation regarding the Court of Chancery. Remarks 'I shall take it as a special favour done to myself personally if you will kindly render my friend any service in your power...'

Letter from Mrs Nolan of Killiney House, Killiney, to Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ. Refers to her financial difficulties and to their effect on her son [Tom], who is studying to be a priest.

Letter from Fr Matthew Russell SJ to the Irish Fr Provincial. Refers to the publication of the first volume of 'The Irish Monthly' as regards finances. Suggests that Fr Clery be appointed as financial manager, and discusses advertising in the publication. Also discusses the layout and encloses a trade-mark design (included).

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from the Gesù in Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports on the takeover of the Gesù by the Giunta, and states that the house is to be used as offices for the Artillery, Infantry and Cavalry. Refers to effect these events are having on the Fr General, and reports on the exodus of the residents from the house. Announces that he and Fr. Lambert are going to the English College. Refers also to the Roman College and the South American College. Refers to confusion in relation to the Pope’s rights over the Observatory. Reports that the Fr General gave him a letter from Fr Walsh, in which he refers to ‘the house in Stephen's Green’, and declares himself to be glad that Fr Walsh has accepted it, and hopes that ‘an energetic man devoted to study’ will be appointed as head.

Letter from Christopher Augustine Reynolds, Bishop of Adelaide to Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin concerning the sending out of two Jesuit Fathers and Nuns from Cabra.

Letter from Fr Joseph Tappeiner SJ, Superior of the Austro-Hungarian Mission, St. Ignatius, Norwood to Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ concerning the prospect of two Jesuit Fathers being sent out to Norwood. Expresses his satisfaction at the news and advises that the Fathers should be young men. Remarks 'We find that it is always more difficult for men whose habits are already formed to get into the way of colonial life.'

Letter from J. A. Hoare, Novitiate of the Christian Brothers, Belvidere House, Drumcondra to Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ concerning a letter he received from the Brother Director of one of their houses in Melbourne referring to the Bishop's decision that until the needs of Melbourne had been addressed he would not sanction the opening of another house in his diocese (i.e. Richmond).

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Confirms that the letters which the latter referred to had arrived, and refers to the travel plans of Fr Kelly and Fr. Mathew. Also refers to Dr Ricard's mission in England. Reports on a dispute with the Bishop of Salford (Herbert Vaughan) in relation to the opening of a school of the Society in Manchester. Gives an account of his own visit to Rome, including his attendance at a dinner in the Irish College on St. Patrick’s Day. Remarks that they have heard nothing from Milltown since coming to Fiesole. Refers to the success of the new Master of Novices.

Printed circular letter from Fr Robert Kelly SJ to [clergy and prelates]. Urges the introduction of his Association of Prayer against intemperance. Refers to its rules, and to ‘the organ of the Association’, the Monitor. Also reports on its success in various dioceses of Great Britain and Ireland. Includes handwritten note from James Quinn, Archbishop of Brisbane, to Fr Kelly. Archbishop Quinn expresses his approval of Fr Kelly’s Association.

Letter informing Michael F. Cox that he has been ‘this day elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy’. Includes extracts from the by-laws relating to the admission of members, and payments to be made by them.

Letter from the Duke of Marlborough, Vice Regal Lodge, Dublin to Dr. Charles Russell concerning the transfer of the library of the Royal Dublin Society to form the basis of the National Library. Asks if Dr Russell will allow his name to go forward as a nomination for one of the trustees.

The Workhouse Dispensary in Longford is vacant… (22 September 1876) make up the bulk of the correspondence.

Remarks 'I felt some resentment towards my memory when I found that so noble and characteristic a poem of that volume of 1868 could have entirely slipped away from me.'

Letter from Maxwell and Weldon, 37 North Great Georges Street, Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial Aloysius Sturzo SJ, Milltown Park, Dublin concerning structural work being carried out at Killiney Castle.

Letter from Fr John Curtis SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Aloysius Sturzo SJ. Refers to a reply he received from Fr John J O'Carroll SJ, and states that the arrangement of the matter in question remains with Fr Sturzo.

Letter from Fr John Grene SJ, Milltown Park, Dublin to Mr Higgin (the purchaser of Killiney Castle from the Society of Jesus) concerning the payment of income tax on Killiney Castle. Refers to the house insurance premium which requires Mr Higgin’s name to be put on the policy.

Letter from Fr John Curtis SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Aloysius Sturzo SJ. Refers to Mr Gallery's papers, and encloses some remarks on them (not included). Suggests that it might not be appropriate to include in the catalogue ‘those whose works are immoral or irreligious’ for fear ‘the young may be tempted to seek them’.

Letter from Fr James A. Cullen, Tagoat, Wexford to Rev James Tuite SJ, Irish Provincial, Milltown Park, Dublin concerning a meeting with Dr Warren. Remarks ‘He could not be kinder with me and told he would place no obstacle in the way of my vocation.’ Refers also to shares in National Bank stock he (Fr Cullen) intends to sign over to the Society.

Letter from Fr James A. Cullen, 4 High Street, Buxton, England to Rev James Tuite SJ, Irish Provincial, Milltown Park, Dublin concerning his noviceship in Arlon, Belgium.’.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Replies to the latter's query about four newly canonized saints. Refers to the death of Fr O'Neill of Belvedere House. Discusses the ‘University College question’, and the Fr General’s opinions on it. Suggests that it be built by subscription on the limited liability principle. Also refers to Fr Weld and the Zambesi Mission, and to Fr Tuite's offer to send Thomas Manning and Thomas Curry there. Reports that Fr de Wit was killed when he fell off his horse, and that Fr Dupelchi has broken his leg.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Refers to Dr Goethals, a bishop in Calcutta, who runs a newspaper there. Discusses the question of the ‘Dublin College’ and Fr Delany's involvement in the matter. Refers to the negative attitude of Cardinal McCabe to the latter, and to his (Delany's) extravagant tendencies in relation to the College. Believes that ‘the very best professors should be engaged (even Protestants, in cases where no Catholic professor was prominent)’. Suggests that the studies at Miltown be put ‘on a more satisfactory footing’, through the use of the various Jesuits that Fr Tuite has in Dublin, including Fr Finlay, who Fr Porter sent back to Ireland ‘after his grand act’. Asks if he has heard anything about the terna from Australia.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Urges the latter to reconsider his decision not to send any novices to the University that year. Reports that Fr Finlay’s grand act was received very well in Spain, and suggests that he be appointed to teach philosophy in place of Fr Baron. Asks again about the terna for a successor to Fr Dalton.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Reports on a ‘very serious charge’ against Fr [Joseph] Clery in Australia. He is to be dismissed if the charge is substantiated. Refers to the terna for the new Superior in Australia, and to the ‘University Reserve’. Asks Fr Tuite what has been done about Fr Murphy's expedition to America, and about studies at Milltown Park. Adds that Fr Chambellan has recalled Fr René.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Conveys Fr General’s opinion that is more important that Fr Finlay should be installed as a professor of philosophy in the Dublin College than be retained as Prefect of Studies in Tullabeg. Refers to Fr Browne who his going to his Tertianship, and informs Fr Tuite that Fr Keating has been allowed to go to Hadzor, Droitwich [for/after] his retreat. Suggests that Fr Browne be sent there too.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Reports that he has just written by direction of the Fr General to Fr Denis Murphy SJ. Conveys to Fr Tuite the Fr General's permission to accompany his brother to Rome, and also to release Fr Thomas Kelly SJ from his office of Rector. The latter's successor is likely to be Fr Edward Donovan SJ. Acknowledges receipt of two copies of Fr Curtis' book. Adds that the Fr General was happy to hear of the success of Clongowes in the Intermediate examination, and is anxious to know how the scholastics fared in the University Exam.
