Letter from Irish Fr Provincial Laurence Kieran SJ St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Rector [St Mary's, Emo] concerning books needed by the Australian Province for five scholastics from Hong Kong. Refers also to a Scholastic who wishes now to be a Brother. Asks if the individual must do the Noviceship again. Includes a page with pencil notations.

Consultors letter from Fr Matthew Egan SJ, St Patrick's College, East Melbourne to the Irish Fr Provincial John Fahy SJ concerning the creation of a Vice-Province and the shortage of men. Refers to the Novitiate and advises that a Juniorate should be established.

Letter from Patrick William Riordan, Archbishop of San Francisco, writing from Thurles, to the Father Superior. Reports that he was seeking some students for the San Francisco diocese at an un-named seminary. States that he will be unable to return to Dublin before sailing, as the president of the seminary was not there, and therefore he has to remain in Thurles until the next day. Thanks the Father Superior for his invitation.

Letter from Fr Edward Purbrick SJ, Stonyhurst College, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Announces that some [brothers/ scholastics] are to form a class at Manresa that year ‘to prepare that matter of the 1st B.A. Examination in the University of London.’ Discusses the first and second B.A. examinations. Suggests that Fr John O'Carroll SJ should be capable of teaching Matriculation subjects.

Letter from Fr Peter Gallwey SJ, writing from Manresa, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he did not allow Br Brady to take his vows; that Br Flynn is working very well, and that Fottrell is ‘a very holy young man.’ Discusses the novitiate in general, and claims that St. Ignatius never intended a novitiate so contemplative.

Letter from Fr Peter Gallwey SJ to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Refers to Br Brady’s poor progress. Declares Br Kane to be ‘a thorough Israelite’. Expresses his satisfaction with Tuite and O'Flynn.

Letter from Fr Peter Gallwey SJ to [ ], from Manresa House, Roehampton, England. Declares that both of the Brs Brady are ‘below par’, and states that O’Farrell and Gartlan will be welcome. Adds that he has ‘no satisfactory news of Napoleon’s last days’.

Letter from Irish Fr Provincial Joseph Lentaigne SJ to Fr Daniel Jones SJ. Advises the use of the English or Latin language for the Irish noviceship. Quotes from a letter from the Father General on the subject of the serving of punch to scholastics. Also refers to the wearing of watches by novices.

Circular letter from Irish Fr Provincial Laurence Kieran SJ (Gardiner Street) to Fr Rector concerning Fr General's wish that scholastic philosophy be introduced into Jesuit secondary schools. Remarks that a committee was formed to discuss the matter. Concludes 'Hence I wish all our college Rectors when opportunity offers to suggest and if possible urge the introduction of scholastic philosophy as an alternative subject for the L.C. examination…'
