Letter from Ellen Russell, wife of Lord Russell of Killowen, 2 Cromwell House, London to her sister concerning her husband and his illness. Remarks that he returned from the circuit '...looking so ill that I was terrified.' Asks her sister to pray for him.

Letter from George Tyrrell, Catholic Church, Richmond, Yorkshire, England to Miss Russell sympathising over the death of her father, Charles Russell. Remarks 'Though there was no necessity whatever for such repetition he insisted on the exhausting task of making a complete review of his life, being quite convinced that the doctors could not save him...'

Letter from Ellen Russell, Tadworth Court, Tadworth, Surrey, England to her sister Rosa [Mulholland] concerning a book about her late husband Lord Russell of Killowen. Remarks how much she dislikes it '...it is only a hasty impressionist sketch roughly and crudely done. In some parts it is clever no doubt the parts where Mr Barry O'Brien is well to the front and indeed one troubles to think what Sir Charles Russell would have done without him. It was he who was the author of the Parnell speech, that is clear-conceited little owl!'

Remarks that her mother is quite upset about the publication 'I think mother has worked herself to the state where she does not know if she wishes the book to be met with success or with failure.'

A file of letters from Evie Hone, Dower House, Marlay, Rathfarnham, Dublin to Fr Aubrey Gwynn, SJ regarding the design and the cost of the stained glass windows in the chapel in University Hall, Hatch Street, Dublin. Remarks that she will try to keep the estimate as low as possible but refers to the increase in cost for glass and glazier’s wages (14 March 1947, 3pp). Refers to the difficulty of purchasing glass in London ‘...the glass situation over there is very bad, I found I could get no flesh colour...and no likelihood of getting any for months...I am going to try Belgium now but when will one get the glass from there!’ (22 October 1947, 2pp). Refers to the design of the windows and remarks ‘I do hope I shall do windows which will please you, I agree with you that the symbols should be clear and intelligible to the students...’ (25 March 1948, 2pp). Apologises for the incorrect amount quoted for the windows ‘...I never trust my own calculations about square ft so I get them checked over by a business man and friend of mine...I am afraid to say I muddled up what he wrote out for me...’ (18 October 1948, 2pp). Refers to a letter from the latter, the subject of which Fr Armellini has communicated to the Fr General. Expresses the hope that Fr Walsh has by now received the painting and drawing of Fr Ffrench, by way of Miss Fleming. Adds that ‘[t]he professor shall not be sent’ until word comes from Fr. Walsh. Encloses small photographs of the portrait (not included). Contains note written by Fr Walsh regarding the content of the letter.

Acknowledges the receipt of the latter's letter, with enclosures, of 24 November. States that he has not yet heard of the arrival of Dr Conroy. Refers to events in Rome, and to a decree which deprived the Society of its houses and churches there. Also laments the effects of the situation on the Catholic schools.

Reports on the takeover of the Gesù by the Giunta, and states that the house is to be used as offices for the Artillery, Infantry and Cavalry. Refers to effect these events are having on the Fr General, and reports on the exodus of the residents from the house. Announces that he and Fr. Lambert are going to the English College. Refers also to the Roman College and the South American College. Refers to confusion in relation to the Pope’s rights over the Observatory. Reports that the Fr General gave him a letter from Fr Walsh, in which he refers to ‘the house in Stephen's Green’, and declares himself to be glad that Fr Walsh has accepted it, and hopes that ‘an energetic man devoted to study’ will be appointed as head.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Florence, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Asks the latter to post the enclosed letters (not included) to Frs Ronan and Kelly. States that the diplomas are to be posted that day, and that he sent Fr Walsh ‘a lithographed account of the suppression of the Gesù’ two days previously, and adds that he also sent one to Fr Gallwey. Refers to the University, and expresses the hope that it will be successful. Reports that the property of the Irish College outside the walls of Rome is advertised for sale by the Giunta.

Refers to the case of a Fr Murphy ‘who committed himself in the Dublin Diocese and was afterward received into the Society in America’. Asks for more information from his correspondent. Asks the latter to ask the Fr Provincial's opinion on the matter. Refers to the situation in Rome and Florence, and the involvement of the Jesuits.

Gives the Fr General's answer to Fr Walsh’s query in relation to the saying of Masses. Reports that he said Mass in the rooms of St Ignatius. Refers to the protest of the Irish bishops against Tyndall.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he has come into possession of ‘some good relics’, and undertakes to send some to Ireland. Refers to Fr Carbery's health, and asserts that a new rector for Clongowes should be appointed as soon as possible. Also refers to Fr Ronan, and the decorations in his church, and to [W] Lynch. Comments on the fact that ‘someone in England has written strongly against the London University’.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Announces that he has decided to send [Thomas] Manning on the Zambesi mission, and asks Fr Tuite to send him to Louvain. Reports that a new edition of the Epitome Instituti is almost completed and advises Fr Tuite to order copies for the members of the Irish Province. Announces that he leaves the following day for Gibraltar, and afterwards goes to India ‘on some business of the Society’.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Refers to the latter's letter on 12 March, and addresses some of the points in it. Refers to Fr Tuite's proposals in relation to Montgret, and passes on the Father General's authorisation to send Fr Brennan to Australia. Also discusses the Terna for Australia, and an offer to the Society of 10 acres of the Catholic Reserve. With regard to the question of the New Zealand mission raised by Fr Dalton in his letter, asks Fr Tuite's opinion on the proposed removal of the missioners from there to Australia. Asks for a copy of the Irish Catholic Directory for 1882.

States that the Fr General gives his consent to Fr Dalton to accept the 10 acres of the Catholic reserve. Advises Fr Tuite that the Fr General wishes that ‘more important matters’ be addressed to himself and in Latin. Refers to the Australian mission and its need for ‘some young blood’. Reminds Fr Tuite that he and the Fr General are awaiting his letter about 'Montgret'. Also refers to the Dublin College, and to Cardinal McCabe, to whom Fr Armellini is to visit; and to a proposed convent of the Sacred Heart at Sydney.
