Jesuit involvement as chaplains in VEC (Vocational Educational Committee) Colleges, Dublin can be traced to the early 1940’s when a number of Irish Jesuits taught religion in technical schools in Dublin. From 1951, when Fr John McAvoy SJ (1908-1983) was appointed Spiritual Director of the Centre of Technology in Bolton Street, Jesuits have worked as chaplains at the College of Commerce, Rathmines and at the Colleges of Technology, Bolton Street and Kevin Street.

The material consists of documents which outline the establishment of the College of Technology at Bolton Street; attempts to establish a student centre (1965); chaplains’ correspondence with Fr Provincial on the status and role of chaplains: problems and issues (1965-1973), ‘John Austin House’, 135 North Circular Road (1974) and a proposal to set up Jesuit house in Dominick Street (1976); Fr Provincial’s nominations for chaplains (1968-1976); Archbishop of Dublin’s Planning Commission for V.E.C. Thanks him for his recognition of his ‘friendly feelings towards the Society’, and declares that Murphy’s ‘fraternal relations’ with his (Gaffney’s) priests was a source of comfort to him.

‘Relazione di una guarigione prodigiosa…’ Account by Fr Vincenzo Decorradi SJ, master of novices in a Jesuit novitiate in Malta. Relates the story of a young novice who went blind and was cured after praying to the Blessed Virgin. (In Italian). A handwritten note in English by ‘J.F.M.’ (possible Fr James Murphy SJ, Irish Provincial) states that the novice was later dismissed from the Society after becoming ‘a regular “ecstatic”’. Letters to the Provincial from Dr William J. Walsh, Archbishop of Dublin, on various matters including the Temperance Movement (the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association) (See also ADMN/3/47); the drawing up of a new ‘list of diocesan examiners for ordinations and for faculties’ and diocesan censors (See also ADMN/3/23).

Correspondence mostly between two sisters and the Irish Fr Provincial concerning the sisters’ efforts to contest the will of their late cousin, Josephine Keshan, decd., 1910, who left the administration of her entire estate to the Society of Jesus. The matter was settled amicably.

Letters, telegrams, memoranda and notes relating to Belgian refugees in Ireland. Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ was a member of the Distribution Committee ‘appointed by the Local Government Board to look after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian Refugees arriving in Dublin’. Most of the letters comprise offers to house refugees or concern schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually. Includes:
– letter from Dr Bernard Coyne, Bishop of Elphin (1913-1926) to Lady Moloney seeking her assistance in the securement of a disused barracks in order to provide shelter for Belgian refugee families (21 Oct. 1914, 1p.);
– bills from drapers and household stores for items purchased for the refugees;
– letters relating to troubles between Protestants and the Catholic refugees in Portadown;
– letters to Fr Nolan from refugees and members of the Belgian Refugees Committee;
– lists of names and locations of refugees in Ireland and names and addresses of people who housed refugees.

On 17 October 1914, the Father Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus, Thomas V. Nolan, received a letter from the Local Government Board to go down to the North Wall at 7.30am on the 18th and meet the 100 Belgian refugees ‘and one hundred each of the following days’. This was due to ‘a few of your Order, who speak Flemish’. Subsequently, the Irish Provincial became a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of refugees arriving in Ireland. The Irish Jesuits received offers to house the refugees and organised schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually.

– copy letter from Andrew Bonar Law (Treasury Chambers, Whitehall) to the Irish Fr Provincial seeking a subscription to ‘the new War Loan’.

Letter to the Irish Fr Provincial from Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ (Lecturer in Ancient History, U.C.D.) on Fr Matthew Devitt’s interpretation of ‘the last clause of the Maynooth Decree…forbidding priests either to attend or to speak at meetings in T.C.D.. This seems to me to be a very strict interpretation of a vague prohibition, and as the matter concerns me closely, I should be glad to let you have my position in writing.’
