Refers to events in Rome, and reports that the Fr General and others will not leave the country ‘till they see what can be done and where they may settle themselves.’ Announces that he is to stay in Rome for some time ‘for the communications with the Propaganda &c.’. Asks Fr. Walsh to send faculties to him to distribute.

States that he has written to the [English] Fr Provincial ‘about the laybrother’, but he has not heard yet whether he may receive him. Adds that the Fr Provincial is proposing to send them [in St. Beuno's] ‘two of the superannuated Brothers’. Refers to the health of other residents: Hughes, O’Connor, O'Flynn and Daly. Suggests that his correspondent communicate with Fr (Robert) Whitty (Fr Provincial) in relation to ordinations of Irish men.

Also refers to the promotion of Fr Tarquini SJ to the Cardinalate, which the Pope did ‘as a mark of esteem to the Society’ during their persecution .

Confirms that the letters which the latter referred to had arrived, and refers to the travel plans of Fr Kelly and Fr. Mathew. Also refers to Dr Ricard's mission in England. Reports on a dispute with the Bishop of Salford (Herbert Vaughan) in relation to the opening of a school of the Society in Manchester. Gives an account of his own visit to Rome, including his attendance at a dinner in the Irish College on St. Patrick’s Day. Remarks that they have heard nothing from Milltown since coming to Fiesole. Refers to the success of the new Master of Novices.

Reports that Fr de Wit was killed when he fell off his horse, and that Fr Dupelchi has broken his leg.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Refers to Dr Goethals, a bishop in Calcutta, who runs a newspaper there. Discusses the question of the ‘Dublin College’ and Fr Delany's involvement in the matter. Refers to the negative attitude of Cardinal McCabe to the latter, and to his (Delany's) extravagant tendencies in relation to the College. Believes that ‘the very best professors should be engaged (even Protestants, in cases where no Catholic professor was prominent)’. Suggests that the studies at Miltown be put ‘on a more satisfactory footing’, through the use of the various Jesuits that Fr Tuite has in Dublin, including Fr Finlay, who Fr Porter sent back to Ireland ‘after his grand act’. Asks if he has heard anything about the terna from Australia.
