Letter from Fr Joseph Tristram SJ, writing from Stonyhurst College, to [ ] in Clongowes. Refers to Fr Weston, and gives permission for him to visit his friends. Announces that he intends to come to Ireland with some pupils, who are to go to Dublin, and states that they are to travel ‘by the Waterloo steam packet’. Also refers to the death of the English Fr Provincial Charles Plowden SJ, and to Fr Scott’s report on how it happened. Reports that Fr Plowden’s body ‘lies in the middle of the church yard at Jougné’. Fr Tristram declares himself to be ‘well satisfied’ with Fr Carr, who, he believes, will ‘prove a worthy son of the Society’.

Remarks that he was a curate in St. Nicholas's new church in Kinsealy and it was to this church that the bottle of water was brought by a Rev. William.' Refers to the death of Rev. James and a parcel of papers including a manuscript of Bellarmin's Catechism. Remarks that he would like the manuscript to be copied '...which I shall willingly do but gradually and scrupulous by following James's copy with corrections before me for copying any work imprints more the subject on the mind than hasty reading.'

Letter from Rev. Henry Young, St Joseph's to his cousin Rev. Henry Lynch concerning a manuscript of Cardinal Bellarmin's Catechism which he wishes to show Rev. Lynch 'After which I will show it to Rev. Mr. Pope...who will, I hope, get Dr. Cullen's sanction for its publication.'

Minutes of the meeting of the committee appointed to enquire into the teaching of scholastic philosophy in Jesuit colleges.

Regulations made by the Father General in response to the Vice-Provincial's visit and his report thereon. The rules concern the regulation of timetables in relation to ‘the duties of the day’, such as prayer, meditation, Masses, confessions etc., as well as mealtimes. There is an emphasis on obedience to authority, as well as economy, and a certain amount of disengagement from secular life. It is noted that the ‘Spirit of the Rule…is quite inconsistent with unnecessary visits to persons of the other sex’.

From Fr John O'Shanahan SJ to Fr [ ] SJ. States that ‘the Father who aids F. Ramière’ – an exponent of the Apostleship of Prayer – has asked him to inform his correspondent that the latter owes him (Ramière) money. Gives instructions as to how he is to settle his account. Adds that N.B. Richardson also owes money.

Letter from Dr Matthew Gaffney, Bishop of Meath, to Fr James Murphy SJ. Refers to news the latter had sent him; that he had ceased to be rector of Tullabeg, and had been made Provincial. Thanks him for his recognition of his ‘friendly feelings towards the Society’, and declares that Murphy’s ‘fraternal relations’ with his (Gaffney’s) priests was a source of comfort to him.

Letter from Irish Fr Provincial Timothy Kenny SJ to Fr Alfred Murphy SJ, where reports on his and others’ journey to, and arrival at, Loyola, and to their reception there. Refers to the health of some of the priests/novices, and to the imminent election of a new General.

Suggests that it might not be appropriate to include in the catalogue ‘those whose works are immoral or irreligious’ for fear ‘the young may be tempted to seek them’.

Suggests that the latter should apply to the Irish Fr Provincial for permission for Fr Costa to return from Malta to act as chaplain to Lady Margaret Frances Domville of Santry House.
