Notes on the Irish Colleges by Fr Edmund Hogan SJ, which includes reference to Jesuits at Salamanca, Seville, Lisbon, Rome and Santiago de Compostela, 1595-1767.

Thirty-two Jesuit chaplains of the Irish Province served in the First World War. They served on the battlefields of France, Belgium, Egypt and Mesopotamia. Four Jesuits were killed: Frs John Gwynn (12 October 1915), William Doyle (17 August 1917), Michael Bergin (12 October 1917) and John Fitzgibbon (18 September 1918). Two Jesuits died from illness: Frs Austin Hartigan (16 July 1916) and Edward Sydes (15 November 1918).

Approximately eleven Irish-born Jesuit chaplains of the English Province served in in the First World War. They included Frs Timothy Carey (Cork) and Walter Montagu (Cromore, Portstewart, County Derry) who both died on active service. Fr William Keary SJ (Woodford, Galway) initially joined the Irish Province but transferred to the English Province.

The majority of letters are from individual chaplains to the Irish Jesuit Provincial Fr Thomas V. Nolan SJ, (1914-1919). There are some postcards, photographs and medals. Some are rich in details (Fr Daniel Roche SJ, 43 items) others have but an obituary. Includes letters to the Irish Jesuit Provincial from Archbishop’s House, Westminster, England concerning the nomination of various Irish Jesuits as chaplains to the forces and their demobilisation, letters on wages and expenditures of chaplains and the appeal for chaplains. Six Jesuits served with the Australian army.

All that lot or parcel of ground with the dwelling house and offices now standing thereon situate in the east side of Gilford Road, Sandymount in the Barony of Dublin, in the County of Dublin, bounded on the north-west, west and south-west by Guilford Road and Sandymount Green, and on the north and north-east partly by the holding of James Beckett, partly by the holding of Susan and Louisa Hepenstal and partly by an unleased portion of the Estate of the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, together with all the rights, members and appurtenances to the said lot or parcel of ground belonging or in any wise appertaining

George Robert Charles, Earl of Pembroke, the party of the second part, being under the age of twenty-one, the parties of the first part demise, set and to farm-let unto John Edmond Byrne the above property (reserving to said George Robert Charles all manner of mines, minerals and royalties), to have and to hold from 29 September 1869, for and during the term of 150 years, yielding and paying unto George Robert Charles the yearly rents of £95 and £190.0.0; the former sum to be paid during the first three years, and the latter sum to be paid during the remainder of the term. Within the first eighteen months of the said term, Byrne to build and complete in a good and workmanlike manner on the said demised premises fronting to Gilford Road five good and substantial dwelling houses, of the best materials well roofed and covered with slates and best lead not more or less than two stories high and shall enclose the said demised premises with a stone or brick wall within the first twelve months of the said term, and within the first eighteen months of said term to expend the sum of £500.0.0 at least in putting the dwelling house and offices now standing on the premises into a permanent and complete condition of repair.

Includes a consent dated 28 May 1903, stating that the lessee shall, so long as any of the instalments payable to the Intermediate Education Board on foot of a loan about to be made on the security of the premises shall remain unpaid, use that portion of the said premises now known as the Academical Institution as a boarding school. A note on the letter indicates that MacDermott proposed to use Duffy's name for the series. Remarks 'The name you propose for the series bangs Bannagher! There is not a living man whom it would not turn into ridicule and contempt to employ his name in such a manner; that sort of distinction is reserved for the dead (15 December 1892, 4pp).
• Includes a letter discussing a book - 100 Best Irish Poems. Considers the amount of pages each poem will require and the poets that should be included. Remarks 'I don't know what your opinion of Mr. Yates (sic) may be: mine is that his verses are the perfection of commonplace. Miss Tynan has made a collection of Irish love poems in which she selects from Mr. Yeats the amours of a kitchen maid. He is however a very self-confident critic; and has recently disparaged Davis and MacCarthy and declared that the Spirit of the Nation contained nothing of any value except Ingram's song.' (17 September 1895, 4pp).

Expresses his joy at reading some of the entries but remarks 'At the same time I would be glad if there were two less of Davis and three less of Ferguson to be replaced by a specimen of Katherine Tynan, Ellen O'Leary, Dora Sigerson...'
