Refers to Fr [Michael] Dooley and remarks 'It had been...a matter of public notoriety and some amusement amongst Ours that for years Fr Dooley has been in the habit of writing constantly to Propaganda...about anything...in the Ecclesiastical world and lately...about the Cardinal's future.' Includes a note written by Fr Provincial concerning a meeting he had with Cardinal Moran about the letter.

Writes to the latter at the request of the Fr General to draw the attention of Fr Walsh ‘to the great importance of avoiding anything which might give the Engl. Government a pretext to quarrel with us’. Adds that the prospects of the Society retaining their houses and churches decrease every day.

Encloses a protest that was read and handed in by Fr Armellini (included; in Italian), and states that the residents are to vacate the building on 3 November.

Conveys the Fr General's desire that Fr Joseph Clery SJ is to be dismissed from the Society in Ireland, and not in Australia. Refers to Fr John O'Carroll's claim to a share of his aunt's property, and also to Fr Saurin's position in relation to property and his father's will. Adds that reports from America do not give accounts of the success of Fr Murphy’s expedition there.

Refers to the death of Fr O'Neill of Belvedere House. Discusses the ‘University College question’, and the Fr General’s opinions on it. Suggests that it be built by subscription on the limited liability principle. Also refers to Fr Weld and the Zambesi Mission, and to Fr Tuite's offer to send Thomas Manning and Thomas Curry there. Reports that Fr de Wit was killed when he fell off his horse, and that Fr Dupelchi has broken his leg.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Thanks his correspondent for ‘the paper & for the good news’. Sends the congratulations of the Fr General, who was particularly pleased by the part played by Fr Delany. Hopes that ‘the business of the college may be brought to an equally favourable termination’. Refers to the case of a member of the Limerick community, whose removal is left to the discretion of Fr Weld's correspondent. Adds that the Fr General is anxious that the man in question should be removed as his behaviour could cause scandal. Also refers to the ‘Montgret lease’, and states that if this Limerick diocesan seminary succeeds it ‘well may lead the way to very important work for the Society in Ireland’. Discusses the importance of helping the development of the Australian province, and refers to the sending of Frs Thomas Keating and Joseph Brennan there.
Note: The name of the man in Limerick, who may be removed from there is blacked out in this letter. The letter is accompanied by an envelope marked: ‘F. Rabbitte; 1. Letter enclosed for archives. 2. I am keeping the other (two) letters; [ ]’.

States that the Fr General gives his consent to Fr Dalton to accept the 10 acres of the Catholic reserve. Advises Fr Tuite that the Fr General wishes that ‘more important matters’ be addressed to himself and in Latin. Refers to the Australian mission and its need for ‘some young blood’. Reminds Fr Tuite that he and the Fr General are awaiting his letter about 'Montgret'. Also refers to the Dublin College, and to Cardinal McCabe, to whom Fr Armellini is to visit; and to a proposed convent of the Sacred Heart at Sydney.

Refers to Fr Tuite's proposals in relation to Montgret, and passes on the Father General's authorisation to send Fr Brennan to Australia. Also discusses the Terna for Australia, and an offer to the Society of 10 acres of the Catholic Reserve. With regard to the question of the New Zealand mission raised by Fr Dalton in his letter, asks Fr Tuite's opinion on the proposed removal of the missioners from there to Australia. Asks for a copy of the Irish Catholic Directory for 1882.

Conveys Fr General’s opinion that is more important that Fr Finlay should be installed as a professor of philosophy in the Dublin College than be retained as Prefect of Studies in Tullabeg. Refers to Fr Browne who his going to his Tertianship, and informs Fr Tuite that Fr Keating has been allowed to go to Hadzor, Droitwich [for/after] his retreat. Suggests that Fr Browne be sent there too.

Conveys to Fr Tuite the Fr General's permission to accompany his brother to Rome, and also to release Fr Thomas Kelly SJ from his office of Rector. The latter's successor is likely to be Fr Edward Donovan SJ. Acknowledges receipt of two copies of Fr Curtis' book. Adds that the Fr General was happy to hear of the success of Clongowes in the Intermediate examination, and is anxious to know how the scholastics fared in the University Exam.

Reports that the Fr General is concerned about the ‘non appearance of Fr Clery’, who was to have returned to Ireland from Sydney. Also quotes from ‘an authentic paper’ in answer to Fr Tuite's question about the formulas of the last vows.

Discusses the question of the ‘Dublin College’ and Fr Delany's involvement in the matter. Refers to the negative attitude of Cardinal McCabe to the latter, and to his (Delany's) extravagant tendencies in relation to the College. Believes that ‘the very best professors should be engaged (even Protestants, in cases where no Catholic professor was prominent)’. Suggests that the studies at Miltown be put ‘on a more satisfactory footing’, through the use of the various Jesuits that Fr Tuite has in Dublin, including Fr Finlay, who Fr Porter sent back to Ireland ‘after his grand act’. Asks if he has heard anything about the terna from Australia.

Gives an outline of the reasons that the Fr General accepted ‘Montgret’ in Limerick, viz. he wishes to put the Apostolic School in Limerick ‘on a firm foundation’, and to provide a seminary for the Bishop's students. Assures Fr Tuite that the Fr General is aware of the current financial difficulties experienced by the Irish Province. Refers to the Zambesi mission, which will be headed by Fr Ronan, and suggests that the lay brother staff of Montgret be recruited from among the candidates for the mission. Adds that the Fr General is also very eager that the Irish province’s plans for a Dublin College come to fruition.

He feels he has neglected a community in Lower Mount Street and writes, ‘Of course I was sick and then unwell for many weeks and then considerable difficulties with retreats in May and June and then a fortnight in Achill and then my own retreat and now the 30 days etc etc You are young and I am not’.

Letter from Fr James Kennedy SJ, The Presbytery, North Shore to Fr Joseph Dalton SJ concerning an alleged incident in the Bank where Fr Kennedy supposedly spoke about Dr Browne and his financial difficulties. Defends himself and explains his version of events.

Letter from Fr James Murphy SJ, writing from St Stanislaus College, Tullamore, County Offaly, to Irish Fr Provincial Patrick Keating SJ. Relates to a sequence of events involving Fr Murphy, Monsignor Gaffney, the Bishop of Meath (Dr. Thomas Nulty) and Fr Anderson. The Bishop tried to assert his right to examine Fr Anderson after the latter had been granted faculties by the Monsignor. The letter describes a conversation between Fr Murphy and the Monsignor on the subject, and Fr Murphy asks for the Provincial's approval to write to the Monsignor, confirming Fr Anderson's fitness in terms of theological knowledge.

A file of letters from Fr James O'Dwyer SJ to Fr Provincial. Many of the letters refer to Xavier College and the administration of the school e.g. teaching staff, subjects taught, equipment needed (laboratory/scientific materials), finances. Includes a letter referring to the Premiership in football '...which we won last Thursday from the Scotch - you would think it was a reversal of the Battle of the Boyne.' (26 August 1910, 2pp). Includes a letter enclosing the Rector's report of Xavier College, Kew (27 December 1911, 2 items). Includes a letter referring to the war. Remarks 'As I write from this side of the globe we hardly know whether the British Empire is still standing. We still hope the sea is clear - but we are really being kept in the dark. All we know is that Germany is pressing on and Namar has fallen. We know that the Holy Father and Father General are dead and Franz Joseph is dying.' (25 August 1914, 5pp). Includes a letter discussing the opening of Newman College. Remarks that the prestige of the Society is at stake and suitable men must be appointed to it, particularly the position of Rector. (17 see also June 1917, 7pp). Includes a letter referring to a crisis that has occurred over the opening of Newman College. Remarks that Fr Superior (Fr Ryan SJ) has raised queries over the amount of money to be paid to the Jesuits, a sum he (Fr Ryan) regards to be too little. Remarks 'The trouble is we cannot exactly see what Fr Ryan's position is. He has a vague fear that he is outwitted by Dr Mannix and a vague recollection of possible better terms from Dr Carr at a time when more money was expected to come in and when the cost of building was lower...You may remember that one of my reasons for pressing you to visit Australia was that I held that Fr Ryan was not the man to do business with Dr Mannix. There is a temperamental difference between them. Dr M. thinks Fr Ryan shifty and Fr Ryan thinks Dr. M. most exacting.' (15 October 1917, 6pp). Includes two letters referring to the appointment of Fr Power SJ to the position of Rector of Newman College and how this was achieved. Expresses his extreme disappointment and annoyance at being put in a very embarrassing situation. Points out that everybody assumed he (Fr O'Dwyer) would be appointed even though he accepts that no official confirmation of this was sent by Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ). Remarks 'Newman College Council met...only laymen were present. It was before Fr Power's name was disclosed to the public and I was greeted as Rector by the members...When Dr. M entered the room business was begun by asking for information re Rector. Then to the consternation of all he repeated your cable to him without any word to his council, without a hint to me, over the heads of the Mission CCs. I was publicly repudiated and humiliated not only by my own superiors (which might be considered part of the game) but by Dr M. acting as superior of Ours.' Concludes 'I have been rejected and snubbed so often by superiors and have always found myself so much better off as the result, that I have great trust in Providence. I should never have got to Australia if Fr J. Murphy had not turned me out of CWC (Clongowes Wood College) as a dangerous character. And I should not have got to Melbourne...if Fr Ryan had not declared me unfit for Riverview...All that does not prevent me from writing strongly...nor prevent me from saying again that my poor efforts for the Society in Australia deserved more consideration.' Refers to Belvedere, which he visited on a recent trip to Dublin, as ‘a splendid Mansion’. Also refers to a letter received from ‘Mr. Cooper of Calcutta’, which gives news of that part of the world.
