'A Diary or Jottings, from day to day of events, especially 1 Nov. 1892 regarding the Society and, in particular, this (Irish) Province, which may prove interesting &, perhaps, even useful when The Writer shall be many years dead and gone.’ Found enclosed is a typed note (n.d., 2pp) by an unknown Jesuit (possibly Fr Fergal McGrath SJ, Irish Province Archivist 1975-1986) giving brief biographical details of Fr Murphy. Also comments on the contents of the diary, ‘Some interesting things recorded are: the initial history of all the houses of the province: the story of the setting up of Milltown as a Coll. Max.: the dispute with the Bishop of Meath (Dr Nulty) over faculties for fathers at Tullabeg: the biographies of various S.J.s (and, e.g., reference to W. Coyne, later father of Fr Eddie Coyne and to Charles Kennedy a benefactor of the province): the account of the great storm of 1890/1 and of the influenza epidemic which swept over Europe from Russia. Minutiae of the day-to-day life, customs, studies and so on, and the final account of the Provincial Congregation (June 1892) after Fr General’s (Anderledy) death are also of interest and some historical value.’ Enclosures includes extracts from diary kept in Tullabeg, 1856 (9pp).

Letter from Fr Charles Aylmer SJ, (Superior of the Mission), Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare to Fr Peter Kenney SJ, Hardwicke Street Chapel, Dublin concerning the opening of Tullabeg.

Letter from Fr George Porter SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial James Tuite SJ. Conveys Fr General’s opinion that is more important that Fr Finlay should be installed as a professor of philosophy in the Dublin College than be retained as Prefect of Studies in Tullabeg. Refers to Fr Browne who his going to his Tertianship, and informs Fr Tuite that Fr Keating has been allowed to go to Hadzor, Droitwich [for/after] his retreat. Suggests that Fr Browne be sent there too.

Letter from Fr John Grene SJ, St Stanislaus College, Tullabeg, County Offaly to l’Abbé McDonald, [Fr John MacDonald SJ], Louvain. From Announces the arrival of Fr Charles Brooke SJ from England, and appointments made so far in the Province. Refers specifically to Belvedere and Clongowes. Announces the names of those who have gone to Tronchiennes that year. Reports on his own activities and on Tullabeg. Also refers to the Repeal campaign. Doubts that the plans for a residence in Galway will come to fruition. Refers to the foundation of a College for Foreign Missions in Dublin, and announces the death of Fr Kearney. Asks if his correspondent might be disposed to go to Colombia to educate and carry out missionary work, as the population of Bogotà wish European Jesuits to do. Also refers to the political situation in Ireland.

Letter from Fr Patrick Meagher SJ, writing from Gardiner Street, Dublin, to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, Vice Provincial, St Stanislaus College Tullabeg, King's County (County Offaly). Refers to the case of a young [novice] – ‘H.T.’, who is suffering from some sort of illness. Reports that he (Meagher) consulted a surgeon on the state of the man’s health. Reports that he received a letter that morning from Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ in Rome, who wrote about the church re-decoration in which he was involved, and also, more extensively, about a lecture given in Rome, which cast aspersions on the Catholic clergy of Ireland. Also refers to a letter he received from Fr Aylmer. Describes preparations for the ‘Festival’, including the recruiting of clergy to say Mass. Reports on the progress of building work also.

A file relating to the Society of Jesus' decision to move the Noviceship and Juniorate from Tullabeg to Rathfarnham. This decision was made following the change of regulations of the National University requiring students to attend lectures in one of the University Colleges. Under the Royal University students had to pass examinations set by the University but could be prepared for the exams elsewhere.
