Remarks that the rent on the land held by the Jesuits is incorrect and advises the correct amount.

Articles by Fr Kevin Laheen SJ entitled ‘The Jesuit Connection’ and ‘Sacred Heart Statute’ which describes the statute by Albert Power of the Sacred Heart in the grounds of the parish church in Knock, County Mayo which had previously been situated in Rathfarnham Castle. Notebooks concerning the workings and the measurements of ‘The O'Leary Seismograph’ at Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin. The first notebook (1946-1957) includes diagrams and details of the pendulum, suspension: trifilar workings of the seismograph. Includes inserts: ‘Fr M Murphy was present and helped erect the pendulum. He was in Rathfarnham, for (at worst) October 1916 to September 1917. Fr Hayes was also present. Fr O'Connell says 1915 work was started’; note from Fr Richard Ingram SJ to Mr Patrick Heelan SJ inviting him to measure the static mag. of O’Leary’. The second notebook records the measurements of the seismograph at Rathfarnham Castle (4 January 1948-May 1953). A file of letters from Fr James Brennan SJ, (Superior), Rathfarnham Castle, Rathfarnham, County Dublin to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V Nolan SJ concerning the move of the community to Rathfarnham, the running of the house, bills and finances and the care of the Juniors. Includes:

• a letter concerning the various work being carried out in preparation for the community occupying the Castle. Remarks 'This is the first letter written by a Jesuit from the above address.' (6 August 1913, 4pp);
• a letter referring to the ceiling paintings in the refectory. Remarks 'I think it would be wise not to put up the pictures in the refectory until we get the complete set.' (18 April 1914, 3pp);
• a letter referring to a consultation at which it was remarked that the Juniors are not as well fed as they should be. Remarks that the lunch needs to be improved. (20 September 1914, 4pp);
• a letter referring to workmen needed to clean out the pond and work on the farm. Refers to injuries sustained by Fr John Gwynn as a military chaplain. Asks Irish Fr Provincial to ask the newly appointed Fr General to bless the Irish Juniorate (14 February 1915, 4pp);

George Robert Charles, Earl of Pembroke, the party of the second part, being under the age of twenty-one, the parties of the first part demise, set and to farm-let unto John Edmond Byrne the above property (reserving to said George Robert Charles all manner of mines, minerals and royalties), to have and to hold from 29 September 1869, for and during the term of 150 years, yielding and paying unto George Robert Charles the yearly rents of £95 and £190.0.0; the former sum to be paid during the first three years, and the latter sum to be paid during the remainder of the term. Within the first eighteen months of the said term, Byrne to build and complete in a good and workmanlike manner on the said demised premises fronting to Gilford Road five good and substantial dwelling houses, of the best materials well roofed and covered with slates and best lead not more or less than two stories high and shall enclose the said demised premises with a stone or brick wall within the first twelve months of the said term, and within the first eighteen months of said term to expend the sum of £500.0.0 at least in putting the dwelling house and offices now standing on the premises into a permanent and complete condition of repair.

In consideration of the expense incurred by the lessee company in the erection of the eight messuages upon the above property, and of the several rents and sums of money reserved and made payable in the present lease and the covenants and agreements made by the lessee company and conditions, the lessor, by virtue and in exercise of the powers conferred on him by the will of 20 May 1904 by the Right Honorable Sidney, late Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, and by the Settled Land Acts of 1882 to 1890, and with the consent of Lord Herbert, demises unto the lessee company the above property to hold from 29 September 2019 for the term of 72 years, paying the yearly rent of £126, and also paying during the said term the several additional contingent rents or weekly sums set down in the lease. The lessee company also undertakes to abide by the several other conditions laid down in the lease, including the construction of two roadways with footpaths, drains and sewers, and also the erection of 34 additional messuages or dwellinghouses, with all necessary cartilages, garages, out-buildings, offices, walls, fences, sewers, drains etc. The lessee company to pay to the lessor the yearly rent of £45.

Copy of Agreement and Deed of Charge between Modern Homes (Dublin) Limited, having their registered office at St Andrew’s, Serpentine Avenue, Ballsbridge, Dublin (the contractors) of the one part, and the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor, Aldermen and burgesses of Dublin, being the Urban Sanitary Authority for the Urban Sanitary District of the City of Dublin (the Corporation) of the other part. The contractors covenant with the said Corporation that the former, their successors and assigns etc. shall at their own expense put, maintain and keep in repair the drain or sewer of said the premises as shown on an accompanying map, and described in a schedule to the agreement (property on Gilford Road, Sandymount), or in default thereof that the Corporation be at liberty upon giving to the contractors 48 hours’ notice in writing, to do such work as may from time to time be necessary to put, maintain and keep the same in such repair as aforesaid and thereupon the said contractors, their successors and assigns will from time to time pay to the said Corporation all costs, charges and expenses of putting, maintaining or keeping in repair the common drain or sewer of the premises. There is some disagreement about the type of book it should be. Fr Gwynn expressed his wish to gather his essays from the 'Irish Ecclesiastical Record' and rewrite them to make a single connected story, however Mr. Wait wants a similar book but ‘on a good deal less detailed scale’ (13 January 1953, 2pp). Includes letters from Françoise Henry, U.C.D., to Fr Gwynn, offering to speak to the publishers on Fr Gwynn’s behalf (5, 23 February 1962, 2 items, 2pp each) and the publisher’s letter to Fr Gwynn following (Prof.) Henry’s conversation with them, “I would like a book, and I don’t insist on a ‘text book.’ I would like something that the educated person without specialised knowledge of the subject can read and which would be useful to students as well.” (19 February 1962, 1p.)

Letters to Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ from Gill and Macmillan concerning Fr Gwynn’s proposal to publish works on ‘the Roman Mass in Ireland Before Trent’ (the proposal was rejected) and his memoirs.

Correspondence concerning Madame Regina Łukasiewicz’s accusations of the theft of her late husband’s papers by Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ and Prof. E. O'Doherty of U.C.D. (her late husband was Jan Łukasiewicz, Professor of Mathematical Logic at the Royal Irish Academy (a special professorship) ). Madame Łukasiewicz was suffering from ‘paranoid psychosis with delusions of persecution’ and was admitted to St Vincent’s Private Mental Home for a number of weeks until Fr Gwynn helped to arrange her removal to the house of her nephew in England. The papers had in actual fact, been deposited by herself in the R.I.A. Library in 1956. Documents include:
