Copy letter from Frederick Lucas, 25 Pembroke square, Kensington, London to Daniel O'Connell concerning a letter written by O'Connell to Lucas and the split between O'Connell and the Young Irelanders. Remarks that the letter gave him '...very great pain...' Remarks '...I feel most deeply mortified that any words I can have used in the 'Tablet' or elsewhere should have received from you...the hateful interpretation which is implied.' Apologises for any hurt or upset caused. Continues by commenting on O'Connell's letter and defends his position and opinion with regard to the Young Irelanders and other political matters. Remarks 'It is and it will be more than ever, my task in the 'Tablet' to urge upon them the unsoundness of their views in many points'. Refers to a letter he (Lucas) received from Rev. Dr. R. J. Whitty commenting on the Young Irelanders. Includes a copy of the letter in question (29 August [ ], 2pp). Expresses his dismay at O'Connell's accusations that he (Lucas) has '...joined against...'O'Connell. Remarks the this is 'unfounded'.

[Copy] letter from Fr John Conmee SJ in Rome to a ‘Mr. Keogh’, thanking him for sending Fr Conmee some shamrock for St. Patrick’s day. Also remarks ‘I am…beginning to long for a sight of old Erin and dear old Gardiner Street, and Father Bannon’s righthand man and coadjutor, Mr. Keogh. I saw the Holy Father for the third time yesterday…He is the most good natured man you ever saw, full of simplicity and holiness and warm heartedness; and he was greatly interested in all we were doing in the Church. I am glad you report so favourably of Father Bannon’s health. All the same I think it would do him good to have a change after his many colds and bronchitis.’

Copies of two letters from Fr Alexander Kyan SJ to Dr. Scallan. The first refers to Scallan's letter of 13 September. Refers to his [Fr. Kyan's] brother Howard's removal to Dr Duncan's, and assures him that he has been a frequent visitor. Refutes the suggestion that his brother is being detained. (15 September 1859). In the second letter Fr Kyan requests that Dr Scallan should send him ‘no other impertinent letters’. (9 January 1860). There is also a note at the bottom of the page stating that Howard was removed from Dr Duncan’s on 29 December 1859, and that ‘James sailed for Liverpool’ on 16 January 1860.

Copied excerpt from the Public Record Office Papers, vol. 115 (10) of 1582. Includes list of accusations made against Sir Richard Shee, all involving association with Irish Catholics and the Church. Also includes a reply made by Sir Richard to Walsingham in 1580 in relation to accusations against him. Shee refers to a Mr White (Thomas White SJ [b.1558, entered 1593; d.1622]?) who stayed in his house for a season. States that White is ‘a priest’ and his wife’s cousin, but as far as he knew ‘no Jesuite’. Pasted onto 'The Spectator', 12 December 1885.
