Correspondence between Vice-Provincial Brendan Lawler and the English Provincialate in Mount Street, London, relating to Fr Leonard Sheil’s recall to the Irish Province due to his final illness. Includes:

• letter from Irish Fr Provincial Brendan Barry SJ to Fr Thomas Dunphy SJ of Mount Street in which he states that Fr Sheil ‘…is beyond medical aid, since he has cancer of the liver. He is not confined to bed and – characteristically – he is all on for doing some work for God before he dies. Nevertheless it is obvious that his days at Farm Street have come to an end. I am therefore putting him in the Catalogus as withdrawn from Farm Street and stationed at the College of Industrial Relations, Sandford Road, Dublin 6. He went there from the nursing home last week and he is to stay there as long as his health allows. Please advise Father Corrigan that it seems best now to regard Father Sheil as no longer applied to the English Province or attached to Farm Street’ (19 Oct. 1967, 1p.) and
  – reply from Fr Dunphy to Fr Lawler – ‘I need hardly say how sorry we are about this, because he has been such a wonderful man. There is no doubt that he has done great work in the parish and has been deeply loved and respected by all who knew him. He was certainly a source of great edification to this community’ (22 Oct. 1967, 1p.).

Zealand are quite equal to them for grandeur. The scenery too is most varied...The roads over the mountains are cut out of the rock and the precipices hundreds of feet deep along which they run make many a stout heart quail.' (1May [ ], 4pp). A file of letters concerning Mungret, Fr Joseph Bourke's decision to quit Mungret and the possibility of the Holy Ghost Fathers taking over the premises. Includes letters from Fr Timothy O'Keeffe SJ, College of the Sacred Heart, Crescent, Limerick to Fr William Ronan SJ on the matter and a letter from Fr Ronan SJ to [ ] .

Photographs are pasted into the album and relate to the following subjects: the interior and exterior of the St Mary's, Emo, gardens, farm, lake, the winter landscape, trees, Jesuit alterations to the house, individuals playing golf and men seated on a wall. Includes group photograph of six Jesuits in the garden, Cormac Gallagher, -,-, Alan Mowbray, Dermot Murray,-. Seven photographs were loose therefore these are stored in mylar sleeves. The photographs have captions by Fr Frank Browne on the reverse. These include:

• It did not ring! - For the first time in 70 years this bell did not call the people to Mass last Sunday. When lighting struck the Church of the Sacred Heart, Courtwood, near Ballybrittas, Leix, on Saturday morning it demolished the bell tower. Falling debris seriously damaged the roof of the n. aisle.
• 3rd Centenary of the "Annals of the Four Masters" ‘Moygara Caste, Co Roscommon [Gurteen, County Sligo]

Preamble:
Fr Finlay is entitled to several sums of £1,075 and £1,228.10s 5% state-guaranteed mortgage bonds of the Agricultural Credit Corporation with which he wishes to establish a Rural Industrial Trust Fund.

Terms:
Fr Finlay transfers the money with a view to the formation of the Trust Fund, to the Trustees subject to a number of clauses, including that the Trustees apply the annual income arising from the bonds ‘in aiding or assisting in such manner as they shall consider most beneficial the poorer workers in Rural Industries…in any part of Ireland including Northern Ireland.’

Includes letters from Archbishop John Charles McQuaid to Irish Fr Provincial John R. MacMahon SJ concerning the issue.

Correspondence between Fr John MacSheahan SJ, Rector, St Ignatius College, Galway and Fr James O’Dea, Dean, University College Galway over concerns of Fr O’Dea, that pressure was applied to female students to attend Mass and attend the Children of Mary Sodality at St Ignatius Church, instead of the university, ultra vires the authority of St Ignatius Church.

Letter from the War Office to the Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ, enclosing the official certificate of death of Fr Doyle.

A file relating to the paintings in Rathfarnham Castle. Includes letters relating to the ceiling paintings by Angelica Kauffman and new decorative works. Includes letters from Joshua Clarke, J Clarke & Sons, Stain glass manufacturers & Church decorators, 33 North Frederick Street, Dublin regarding the ceiling painting by 'my lady artist' (Miss Crilly, later known as Margaret Clarke) (10 September 1913). Only one painting by Margaret Crilly was accepted, which disappointed Joshua Clarke. Initially Miss Crilly rejected the offer of £7 10 shlllings per painting. Joshua Clarke persuaded her to accept £7, but by this stage, it was too late. She received £10 for her painting and Cambridge & Co. Ltd, Dublin were engaged (October 1913), and agreed a price of £35 for the series of nine painting. The artist Patrick Tuohy completed the ceiling paintings.

A file of correspondence between Fr Eddie Bourke SJ, Wah Yan College, Hong Kong and Bishop Valtorta concerning the issuing of an order that the Irish Jesuit Fathers are to wear a soutane in public. Fr Bourke's letters urge the Bishop to reconsider. Outlines his reasons for this request (1946). Question already arose in 1935.
