Typed memorandum for Irish Fr Provincial listing the number of Irish missions given by Fr Leonard Sheil SJ from 1933 to 1947; his work in Britain which began in 1948, ‘Since then Fr Sheil has given five missions most years and never less than three – during the autumn period in Britain’; and listing his work from 1933 to 1947 in Ireland in the autumn as ‘mostly with the convent school-girls, and occasional retreats in convents and in Jesuit churches.’

Declares that he would not think he should cross the Channel (back to Ireland) in his current state of health, and furthermore that he would only leave if the person who was to supply for him had been there for a time. Refers to the debts owed by him to various people. States that he would rather ‘die in a ditch’ before yielding to ‘a Judas like trick on the part of Dr Briggs [Bishop of the Northern District]’.

Letter from [ ] Wray (mother-in-law of William Bliss), Liverpool to Dr Charles Russell concerning William Bliss and his conversion to the Catholic religion. Appeals to Dr. Russell '...to suggest to him that there are natural as well as moral rights of others which ought to be considered as well as his own religious and legal rights.' Refers to William Bliss' desire to have all of his children brought up in the Catholic faith 'To be thus bereft of her children one by one, will break the mother's heart; it will certainly not win her to her husband's religion; and will necessitate proceedings which will create domestic discord and probably bring this scandal before the world.' Concludes 'There is another matter which also has a bearing upon this case, which, for his own sake, should not come before the public. I allude to his extreme excitability of temper which not infrequently has made my daughter fear for her own personal safety. I have plenty of witnesses to prove this.'

Janssens SJ concerning the question whether the Irish Jesuit Mission of Hong Kong (including Singapore and Malaya) should be constituted a dependent Vice-Province or retain its status as a mission under the jurisdiction of the Irish Provincial. Outlines the opinions of the consultors of the Irish Province the Superior and consultors of the Hong Kong mission and the Provincial of the Irish Province.

From Fr Matthew Gahan SJ in the Isle of Man to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ in Tullabeg, County Offaly. Complains that the latter’s request that ‘the place in Castletown’ not be sold was untimely, and announces that he is to rent it out. Believes that the mission should be given up, but does not think it possible. Refers to his bad health, and asserts that he believes that he is ‘very soon to meet death’. Also refers to the bad state of the chapel. Asserts that he would rather be dismissed from the Society, which, he believes, has been betrayed, than ‘be made the foot ball of any Vicar Apostolic’.

Report by Fr Patrick Joy SJ (Superior of the Hong Kong mission) on interviews he had in Rome with various officials concerning the future of the Hong Kong mission.

Asks for some money to be sent over to him, as he is ‘tormented with one little debt or other’.

Asks him to defer the sale of the chapel in Castletown until he (Fr. Bracken) receives a reply from the Fr. General.

Refers to the departure of his house-keeper and his misfortune in acquiring a new servant who is both Manx and a Methodist.
