A file relating to the will of Matilda O'Donnell in which she bequeathed the residue of her property to her trustees and executors, Fr. Thomas V. Nolan SJ and Fr Michael Browne SJ, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin. The file contains extensive background material that appears to have little to do with the Society of Jesus and their bequest. However, as Frs. Nolan and Browne were appointed as trustees and executors of the will it may have been necessary to acquaint themselves fully with Miss Matilda O'Donnell's affairs.

Notebook (XXXII) belonging to Fr John Curtis SJ containing the accounts of the property of the Irish Vice Province of the Society of Jesus and other details including title deeds etc.

Letter from Fr Patrick Bracken SJ to [ ]. Recommends various sources for J[ohn] O’Connell and other Catholic members of the House of Commons for their argument against the supremacy of the Crown. Suggests that they identify themselves, in this matter, ‘with all the Presbyterians of Ireland & Scotland as well as with the other Dissenters in denouncing & repudiating the Royal Supremacy’, and in doing so, gain support. Also refers to the Catholic episcopacy and the Reformation.

Documents relating to the Visitation of the Irish Vice-Province by Fr Charles Brooke SJ in 1842. Includes [copy] letter containing Fr Visitor’s views on the proposal to establish a Novitiate at Tullabeg (22 Sep. 1842, 2pp) and [copy] letter from Fr Brooke to the Vice-Provincial, Fr Robert St Leger SJ concerning Tullabeg’s large debts and the proposal to establish a Novitiate at the College, with the Novices undertaking to ‘take some part of the teaching of the scholars’ (1 Oct. 1842, 3pp).

From Announces the arrival of Fr Charles Brooke SJ from England, and appointments made so far in the Province. Refers specifically to Belvedere and Clongowes. Announces the names of those who have gone to Tronchiennes that year. Reports on his own activities and on Tullabeg. Also refers to the Repeal campaign. Doubts that the plans for a residence in Galway will come to fruition. Refers to the foundation of a College for Foreign Missions in Dublin, and announces the death of Fr Kearney. Asks if his correspondent might be disposed to go to Colombia to educate and carry out missionary work, as the population of Bogotà wish European Jesuits to do. Also refers to the political situation in Ireland.

'Avvisi pè i Novisi di S. Andrea di Roma. Qui spernit modica paulatim decidet.' Italian novitiate custom book with stamp of 'Tullabeg College' on the first page. With index. Found in the SJ Library of St. Stanislaus' College, Tullabeg, the book was probably brought back from Sicily/southern Italy early last century.

Letter from Fr Robert St Leger SJ, India to Fr John Curtis SJ, St Stanisalus College, Tullabeg, Tullamore, County Offaly containing extensive details of an incident concerning the college and church of Sivdahna. Explains fully the situation. Discusses and defends his position in the matter. Refers to three accusations levelled at him. Remarks that he wrote nine or ten times to the General 'I then got from him a letter full of accusations, of this I do not complain but I complain that all these accusations were considered just and I felt myself to have been condemned before my cause was examined.'

From Fr Matthew Gahan SJ in the Isle of Man to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ in Tullabeg. Declares that he would not think he should cross the Channel (back to Ireland) in his current state of health, and furthermore that he would only leave if the person who was to supply for him had been there for a time. Refers to the debts owed by him to various people. States that he would rather ‘die in a ditch’ before yielding to ‘a Judas like trick on the part of Dr Briggs [Bishop of the Northern District]’.

Letter from Fr Patrick Meagher SJ, writing from Gardiner Street, Dublin, to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, Vice Provincial, St Stanislaus College Tullabeg, King's County (County Offaly). Refers to the case of a young [novice] – ‘H.T.’, who is suffering from some sort of illness. Reports that he (Meagher) consulted a surgeon on the state of the man’s health. Reports that he received a letter that morning from Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ in Rome, who wrote about the church re-decoration in which he was involved, and also, more extensively, about a lecture given in Rome, which cast aspersions on the Catholic clergy of Ireland. Also refers to a letter he received from Fr Aylmer. Describes preparations for the ‘Festival’, including the recruiting of clergy to say Mass. Reports on the progress of building work also.

From Fr Patrick Bracken SJ, writing from Tullabeg, County Offaly to Fr Gahan in the Isle of Man. Reports on some members of the community in Tullabeg, including Fr Robert Haly and Fr Aylmer, and adds that Fr Esmonde is on his way to Rome. Refers to Fr Gahan’s problems in the Isle of Man in relation to the provision of Mass for Catholics in Douglas, and the question of whether the Bishop would permit this. Asks him to defer the sale of the chapel in Castletown until he (Fr. Bracken) receives a reply from the Fr. General.

From Fr Peter Kenney SJ to Fr Patrick Bracken SJ. Announces that he will not be able to go to Tullabeg that year. Reports on the situation in Clongowes, and on the various Jesuits residents there. Reports also on the Jesuit mission in the Isle of Man, where Fr Aylmer stopped for a time to assess the situation. Refers to the debate on the question of whether the mission there should be retained by the Irish Jesuits, and also to the opening of a new chapel in Douglas.

Letter from Fr Charles Aylmer SJ, (Superior of the Mission), Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare to Fr Peter Kenney SJ, Hardwicke Street Chapel, Dublin concerning the opening of Tullabeg.

The Jesuits bought Tullabeg in 1818 (dedicated it to St Stanislaus) and opened a preparatory school for boys destined to go to Clongowes Wood College, Kildare. St Stanislaus College gradually developed as an educational rival to its sister school. It merged with Clongowes Wood College in 1886. Tullabeg then became a house of Jesuit formation: novitiate (1888-1930), juniorate (1895-1911), tertianship (1911-1927) and philosophate (1930-1962). In 1962, it was decided that the students of philosophy should be sent abroad for study. Tullabeg subsequently became a retreat house and was closed in May 1991.

The papers of St Stanislaus College include information on a history of the area around Tullabeg, building and property (1912-2004), correspondence with Superiors (1881-1971), finance (1912-1990), documents on Jesuit training (1818-1962), retreat house (1949-1960) and artworks (1940-1991).

Material is in the form of letters, reports, architectural plans, notes, maps and photographs (1902-1990). Programmes for plays include Shrovetide at St. Stanislaus College, Tullamore; ‘The Man with the Iron Mask’, ‘All at Coventry’ and ‘The Smoked Miser’ (1885) and for ‘Caitlín Ní Uallacáin’ and ‘Cox and Box’ and details Jesuits who performed (1925).

A file of letters from Fr Charles Plowden SJ (novice master at Stonyhurst) concerning Society matters to to Fr Charles Aylmer SJ. Many of the letters relate to the Irish novices studying in Stonyhurst and English novices studying in Ireland and general Society matters.

• Includes a letter concerning the appointment of Fr Lavizzario as the agent of the Society in Rome (11 February 1818, 3pp).
• Includes a letter concerning an official letter received from the Bishop re-affirming that the Society of Jesus had not been restored. Remarks that their property in London is under threat '…Dr Poynter has employed a lawyer to claim our property in London. He has means of succeeding and his success will complete our ruin. We are in fact in a very dangerous crisis.' (23 July 1818, 2pp).
• Includes a letter concerning three scholastics from the English Province he proposes to send to Ireland for their studies. Describes the three (1 September 1818, 3pp).
• Includes a letter referring to a refusal to ordain students from Stonyhurst 'who do not renounce their religious state.' Continues 'very probably a requisition to us all to make such renunciation will soon arrive and this will bring the matter to an issue. Our refusal will be followed by censures, suspension…' ( 10 September 1818, 1p).
• Includes a letter remarking that the Society of Jesus in England has no way of obtaining Holy Orders except by going to Clongowes. Remarks 'The candidates must be adopted there as students of your college in order to be presented by you.' (29 September 1818, 2pp, incomplete).
• Includes an account of money owed to Stonyhurst College for the upkeep of Irish scholastics studying there (18 February 1819, 4pp).
• Includes a letter referring to Fr Kenney's voyage to America (15 July 1819, 3pp).

• Includes a letter written from Rome concerning Society matters and directions from Fr General. Refers to Spain, remarks 'In Spain all seems to be lost for the Society excepting their religious spirit. Their letters and petitions for directions how to act show that they retain the full spirit of their vocation…on the other hand God sends comfort from Vienna, where the Austrian Emperor openly protects the Society and settles it in Gallicia and with generous allowances for subsistence and many privileges and exemptions.' Refers to Fr Kenney's return from America (23 September 1820, 2pp).
• Includes a letter referring to the sudden introduction of the Catholic Bill. Remarks '…the Catholic Bill fills my head, heart and time…In this crisis we must have an agent here…there must be somebody to speak in our cause. The General must decide this point before Easter, and he go with me to the Pope...' (7 April 1821, 3pp).
