I am glad you report so favourably of Father Bannon’s health. All the same I think it would do him good to have a change after his many colds and bronchitis.’

Letters written to Fr John Conmee's friend, Fr Matthew Russell SJ, following Fr Conmee’s death. Includes:
– letter from Fr Patrick J. Ryan, C.C. of Fairview, Dublin – ‘God grant that he is now with the good Master he loved to speak of and to paint in words love and rainbow-hope. Your Fathers will miss his sweet, lovely voice, and so will many hundreds of secular priests who rose up to better and loftier things begotten of his preaching and good example. Who can tell the number of wounded hearts he cured and sent away rejoicing?’ (13 May 1910, 2pp);
– letters from a Mr Cullinan and his wife of Portrane House, Donabate, Dublin – ‘His whole personality endeared him to everyone with whom he came in contact…he was always a true friend and advisor.…We both owe more to Fr Conmee than you can have any idea of and his loss is a cruel blow to us’ (14 May 1910, 4pp). Also states “As regards our dear friend being ‘forgotten’ – that can never apply to 'us', at any rate. He lives in our memory every hour of the day and his place in our hearts, as the dearest friend and finest man we ever met, can never be filled” (16 Jun. 1910, 2pp).

Letter from Elodie Belloc to Fr Matthew Russell SJ thanking him for a copy of 'The Irish Monthly'. Expresses her gratitude for Fr Russell’s ‘...great appreciation of my dear husband. Refers to her life and her husband's life in England ‘It is almost impossible for anyone to whom God has not given it to suffer to know what it is for two militant and convinced Catholics to live in...England. But his love and companionship and the security of the Faith constitute an unmerited reward.’ Remarks that she has decided to visit France (from where this letter is written) with her children despite flooding in the area.

Holograph letters from Fr Matthew Devitt SJ, Rome to Father Rector, concerning the deliberation over whether to hold a General Congregation or not (27 September); in official interview with Fr. General ‘with regard fundamental theology…no changes or suspension of ordination’ however ‘though the ordination must stand the execution may be deferred for a year or two while we are preparing a professor and he expects this should be set about without delay’. Fr Devitt reports that ‘there is a sickening sirocco wind blowing - very fatiguing and oppressiveness’ (5 October).

Letter from Victor G SJ, Constantine, 55 rue Serigny, Algeria to Fr David Gallery SJ thanking him for his letter but cautions him against using the address and putting SJ after his name. Remarks 'You put my Superior in boiling water..now in several of our domiciles any letter bearing the name of Reverend Pere etc.is returned unopened to the sender...Just as present we are hunted by the detectives of the sectarian government to be taken as delinquent or rebelious [sic] to the law in reconstituting a community'. Continues 'We don't pass for Jesuit anymore, we are diocesan missionaries'. Remarks that the Bishop ordered him to Biskra to help out the priest who had fallen ill. Remarks that the heat was unbearable and he was relived to return to Constantine.

Includes official document concerning the decoration (6 May 1919) and letter from the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs (22 May 1919). The medal in case, with name of Fernanrd Heremans, Schaerbeek, is a five-armed white enamel and silver-gilt Maltese cross with silver-gilt graduated rays between the arms, on green enamel oval laurel wreath suspension; the face with a gilt-edged circular central blue enamel medallion bearing the gilt crown of Belgium; the reverse with a gilt-edged circular central blue enamel medallion bearing the cipher of King Leopold II, founder of the Order. States in his letter ‘Dont fail to read 'The Clongownian'. You will be amazed to read about your younger brother as indeed he was to read about himself.…I suspect who wrote it but I am not quite certain. It is artistically done but much over laudatory. You cried when I returned to the world but Providence decreed otherwise for there were many family matters that required my special attention. Just think I entered my 73rd year on last Monday. Oh how short they appear now!’

Finlay SJ concerning Fr Finlay’s “attitude to Mr Lennox Robinson in regard to his story ‘The Madonna of Slieve Dun’…I presume that you accept Mr Robinson’s repudiation of the suggestion that his story was a parody of the Scripture History of the Incarnation.” Protests about the attitude of a ‘small section of the press in Ireland’ with regard to ‘Christian standards’, defends Mr. Robinson and states ‘I…regard it as binding, in us Catholics particularly, to see that injustice is not done in our name in this matter…I am prepared to urge Mr. Robinson to get the matter considered by the Holy Office itself if necessary rather than submit to the injustice of being treated as a blaspheming parodist.’
