A file of letters from Fr Nicholas Wiseman (later Cardinal) to Dr Charles Russell. Includes a letter remarking that due to ill health he cannot edit the next issue of the Dublin Review. Remarks that he has been in contact with Thomas Richardson regarding the impending ownership of the Dublin Review 'Let us get over this one crisis more and please God the Review will be safe. Richardson is determined to push it, it will succeed.' ([ ]1844, 7pp). Includes a letter remarking 'Richardson takes the 'Review' upon our terms...I feel confident...that in his hands the 'Review' will be pushed forward very differently from the past.' Remarks that he hopes Dr. Russell '...may be able to get your friends to write for us.' Concludes 'If the [secret] history of the D.R. were known to the public how strange it would appear - so often in the pains of sinking yet always rescued.' ([ ] 1844, 6pp). Discusses potential articles for the Dublin Review (27 April 1846, 4pp). Refers to the quality of articles appearing in the Review and remarks 'The Review is not deep. It wants some more reasoning and original articles...As for my own article...I ran off the rails and could not bring out what I wanted. Let us get something good for next time.' Ward, De Morgan, Christie, Newman, Allies etc. have written for us...surely the convert element ought to be more cultivated and I must own I believe the fault lies in our having a mere business editor and no recognised literary one who enjoys the confidence of our learned men. I see the growing narrowness of our work and deplore it. Never a paper on Physics, Astronomical discoveries, Chemistry, Electricity, Steam, Railroads, Physiology, Medicine, Geology, Botany, Law Reform nor even on Politics in the wider sense. Never any article on foreign countries except the bleak north - I mean an original paper. W. B. cannot possibly attend to getting people to write and he has no influence. We shall never do as we ought till something is done to widen our range of topics and writers (18 February 1853, 8pp). Refers to a letter he has written to Dr Newman concerning the Dublin Review and '...begging of him not to enter into any plans for a new Review as we might get all we wanted out of our present one.' (3 January 1857, 3pp). Discusses the unsatisfactory situation regarding the publisher of the Dublin Review. Remarks 'I am satisfied that our only chance of success is a new publisher. If this is not feasible the 'Review' must drop for we cannot possibly go on in the present unsatisfactory manner.' Refers to a 'coalition' with the Rambler and remarks this is impossible. Includes a letter describing the voyage to Australia (18 September 1865,4pp). Includes a letter referring to the Archbishop's wish that the Jesuit Fathers 'take up the absolute care of this (St. Patrick's) college and he will give us two additional things viz.: the parish of Richmond and the ground for a University College...The Bishop will sign a document giving it over to us exclusively and declaring that it can never be taken from us unless we wish to give it up.' (25 September 1865, 4pp). Includes a letter expressing his delight that two more Fathers are to be sent out to St. Patrick's College. Describes the pupils that attend the college (24 March 1866, 8pp). Includes a letter concerning Fr Dalton's arrival in Melbourne. Refers to Miss Therry's threat of legal action concerning her brother's will (25 April 1866, 2pp). Includes a letter referring to his return to Ireland and his travel arrangements. Remarks 'I have often written in fulfillment of what I believed to be my duty as a Consultor and expressed a difference in opinion from Fr Dalton and some of his advisers in many points of importance.' Remarks that her husband wishes all of the children to be brought up Roman Catholic '...he is about to remove Mary our eldest child altogether from my care.' Continues 'As to the boys it is another matter - I wish to be quite fair and just - and it is right that my husband should have some and it seems natural that he should have the boys - while the girls who need a mother's care so much should be left to me. Why should I have to go lonely to Church for the rest of my life?'.

Includes a letter written from Melbourne describing Prince Alfred's visit to the city. Describes the situation in St Patrick's College and remarks that its reputation is rising but that further money is needed. Remarks 'We will not be able to work the college even as a day-school for another year without help.' (26 November 1867, 4pp). Includes a letter concerning remarks made by Fr Lentaigne SJ to Fr Dalton SJ (Superior of the Mission). Refers to the estrangement between the Bishops and some of the priests and remarks 'It appears to me...that neither the Bishop nor the leading priests in the city were ever friendly, but that they required of us to work for them and to perform those duties especially which demanded a great deal of time and labour and for which there was no remuneration whatever...' (11 September 1868, 6pp). Includes a letter referring to a lecture delivered by Dr Bromby, headmaster of the Church of England Grammar School on Scripture. All that lot or parcel of ground with the dwelling house and offices now standing thereon situate in the east side of Gilford Road, Sandymount in the Barony of Dublin, in the County of Dublin, bounded on the north-west, west and south-west by Guilford Road and Sandymount Green, and on the north and north-east partly by the holding of James Beckett, partly by the holding of Susan and Louisa Hepenstal and partly by an unleased portion of the Estate of the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, together with all the rights, members and appurtenances to the said lot or parcel of ground belonging or in any wise appertaining

George Robert Charles, Earl of Pembroke, the party of the second part, being under the age of twenty-one, the parties of the first part demise, set and to farm-let unto John Edmond Byrne the above property (reserving to said George Robert Charles all manner of mines, minerals and royalties), to have and to hold from 29 September 1869, for and during the term of 150 years, yielding and paying unto George Robert Charles the yearly rents of £95 and £190.0.0; the former sum to be paid during the first three years, and the latter sum to be paid during the remainder of the term. Within the first eighteen months of the said term, Byrne to build and complete in a good and workmanlike manner on the said demised premises fronting to Gilford Road five good and substantial dwelling houses, of the best materials well roofed and covered with slates and best lead not more or less than two stories high and shall enclose the said demised premises with a stone or brick wall within the first twelve months of the said term, and within the first eighteen months of said term to expend the sum of £500.0.0 at least in putting the dwelling house and offices now standing on the premises into a permanent and complete condition of repair.

Two letters from John Kenny (born 1784), Ennis, County Clare to Dr Charles Russell concerning information on the Siege of Limerick and the 1798 Rebellion. Remarks 'In reply to your enquiry regarding John MacNamara, I was in his house when he died. This must have been before March 1799...I...have no further recollection of his having stated that he was at the Siege of Limerick than that I well remember his contrasting the mildness of the executions during the Rebellion of 1798 with the wholesale slaughter he himself witnessed in the same place.' (1 April 1863, 4pp). Gives names and ages of those he know whose age exceeded 100.
