Information on Fr Aubrey Gwynn’s great-grandfather’s cousin, John Gwynne (1754 – 1828/9), founder of a ‘charitable endowment Institution, Derry.’ Includes letters from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland to Fr Gwynn (30 June, 8 July 1975, 2 items. 1p. each) and note given to Fr Gwynn by Archbishop George Simms (July 1974, 1p.) (John Gwynne bequeathed a large sum of money to found a charitable endowment in Derry known as the Gwynne Institution, for the education of boys whose parents could not afford to give them a suitable education. Letters from Rose (Gayner, nee Gwynn) (Fr Gwynn’s cousin) following the illness and death of Fr Gwynn’s sister, Sheila Moorehead, in December 1981. Includes references to a portrait of their ‘Aunt May’ and a family story about Walter Osborne (Fr Gwynn’s godfather): ‘He was apparently rather dominated by a powerful mother but there was an understanding that he would marry Aunt Lucy. However before the understanding could become an engagement he caught a bad cold, and died of pneumonia’ (8 February 1982, 4pp).
