Letter from Fr Jerry M. MurphySJ, Newman College, University of Melbourne, Carlton, Melbourne to Irish Fr Provincial John Fahy SJ concerning the Australian Status and the question of Australia becoming a Vice-Province.

A file of letters from Fr Albert Power SJ to Irish Fr Provincial concerning his voyage to Australia via America. Includes letters referring to William Tucker SJ and his health (6 October 1918 & 7 October 1918, 2 items). Includes a letter concerning his journey to San Francisco. Remarks 'At San Francisco there is a Priest (Fr O'Neill) who is Rector of Newman Hall in the University at Berkeley...a Catholic Hall like the one I am going to be acquainted with. I have a letter of introduction to him and hope to get some lights from him. They say he has done a great deal for his Hall...' (21 November 1918, 2pp). Includes a letter concerning his new position as Rector of Newman College. Refers to Fr O'Dwyer SJ. Remarks 'The poor man has had a v. heavy trial over this Newman College affair - and I think he has been dealt with rather unceremoniously.' Refers to an offer by the Archbishop of Perth inviting the Jesuits to establish a see also residence in Perth. Remarks 'I would remind your Reverence that we are very much undermanned out here - and unless you can send us out a good few subjects, it might be better not to extend the frontier that we have to garrison.' (21 January 1919, 2pp). Includes a letter reporting on Newman College after 18 months as Rector of the College (19 August 1920, 4pp). Includes a letter referring to a consult of the mission at which the proposal of Australia becoming a Vice-Province was discussed. Summarises the points raised (13 October 1924, 3pp).

Letters from Fr Jeremiah Sullivan SJ, St Ignatius, Richmond, Victoria to Irish Fr Provincial John Fahy SJ concerning Mr George Hughes SJ, his poor health, unsuitability to the Society and subsequent death. Refers also to the Novitiate at Loyola and drawing (12 February 1930, 4pp).

A file of letters from Fr John Fahy SJ (Vice-Provincial of the Vice-Province 19 March 1931-25 August 1939) to Irish Fr Provincial Laurence Kieran SJ. Includes a letter referring to a visit to the Hong Kong Mission. Remarks 'Your men are doing glorious work there I had expected great things; the reality surpassed my expectations. That will become a first class mission.' (25 February 1937, 2pp). Includes a letter referring to plans for a retreat house and scholasticate at Sydney. Refers to the Archbishop of Perth and his desire for the Jesuit fathers to build a college in Perth. Remarks '...he wishes to get the Jesuits into his diocese. It does not seem to have occurred to him that the people of Perth would be expected to support any Jesuit Fathers who work there. So we exchange letters on this question of filthy lucre.' (1 April 1937, 2pp). Includes a letter expressing his thanks to Fr Kieran SJ for writing about the Australian Jesuits studying in Ireland. Remarks '...I am most grateful for your interest in them and your care of them. Other Provincials never write about our men: all we get is the bill and the exam results...' Refers to his own position as Provincial of the Vice-Province. Remarks 'Yes, our period of office is drawing to a close...I long for the day... Boys oh Boys, think of it: no more "relationes", no more triennial papers, no more elenchi, no more building, no more administratio temporalis, no more...peace perfect peace.' (21 April 1937, 2pp). Includes a letter referring to the proposed opening of a scholasticate in January 1938 (25 October 1938, 1p).

A file relating to Duntryleague, Orange, a property belonging to the Dalton family and the location of the new Novitiate. Includes: handwritten letter from Fr John S Bourke, St Patrick's College SJ, Grey Street, East Melbourne, to Irish Fr Provincial John Fahy SJ on issues such as: school results; vocations; the community spirit at St Patrick's College, ‘a happy family’; finances; the Archbishop of Melbourne and his wish for a reception for the Papal Legate; the choice of a new novitiate - give a trial to Dalton Estate, Duntryleague, Orange, New South Wales…the Bishop of Bathurst refused us permission to go to Orange ,'Now I think we should sell the property. Whatever sentimental reasons there may have been for holding it to please the Dalton's - must now I think be overruled.' (2 December 1928, 6pp). Includes typewritten account of the Dalton Estate by Fr Sullivan (14 March 1929) and handcoloured map of Duntryleague, Orange, New South Wales (the Dalton property).

Fr John Fahy SJ, trustee as a result of Fr Peter Finlay's (the original trustee) will, appoints Francis Davys and Patrick Moorehead as new trustees.
