A file of bank account books for the Hibernian Bank and the National Bank Limited, related to the Irish Jesuit Province

A file relating to the controversy between Dr Edward Thomas O'Dwyer, Bishop of Limerick and Mungret College concerning the admission of lay boys to the College. The file contains manuscript material written by Fr Thomas Morrissey SJ. In a summary he remarks that the Bishop saw the presence of lay students at Mungret 'as a threat to his seminary' (nd, 1p). Includes correspondence, and prospectus for Mungret College, 1882, Annual reports of the Irish Apostolic School, Mungret, 1889 and 1895.

Notes compiled by Fr John Grene SJ, on individual Jesuits of the Irish Province. A note states 'Possibly all are in Memorials Ir. Prov.' Some notes in other hand, post-date Grene.

Letter from Fr William McCartan to Fr Patrick Hughes SJ. States that he is not satisfied with the latter's letter, and claims that he had told Fr Brown that he intended to purchase five heifers. Complains that he was never treated in such a manner before.

Letter from Dr Patrick Moran, Archbishop of Sydney, writing from Kilkenny, to Fr Ronan. States that the work in which the latter is engaged ‘cannot be aided by the Executors of the late Mr. Devereux’, and that ‘there is no fund available which the Executors could apply to [his] charitable undertaking.’ Accompanied by an envelope addressed to Fr Brown in Gardiner Street, with a note which reads: ‘a courteous! letter from Dr Moran - Abp Sydney’.

Includes a letter with another letter written on the back by Fr Sturzo SJ (Superior of the Mission) to Fr Thomas Brown SJ concerning the names of those he feels would be unsuitable for the management of St Aloysius College (3 February 1887, 1p).

A file relating to Mr Francis Davis's request to leave the Society of Jesus. Includes a letter expressing his intention to stay in Australia. (12 March 1911, 1p). Includes a copy of a letter from Fr Thomas Brown SJ (Superior of the Mission), St Mary's, North Sydney to Mr Davis remarking that it would be wise for him to return to Ireland (1 July 1911, 1p).

A file of letters from Fr Thomas P Brown SJ (Mission Superior, 14 June 1908-9 April 1913) to Irish Fr Provincial concerning the Australian Mission and community matters in the various houses. Includes a letter written from St. Ignatius, Richmond, Melbourne referring to the Archbishop's decision to cut off the Greenwich district from the North Sydney district he assigned to the Society of Jesus. 'This invasion was a surprise to many who fondly believed that H.E. had promised not to cut off the Greenwich district provided we kept a Father at Loyola to attend to it. This condition was fulfilled.' (25 January 1911, 4pp). Includes a letter referring to Fr Pigot SJ and his trip to see also London. Remarks that Fr Pigot hopes to visit seismographic stations in Europe, and Japan 'What he hopes to gain by the tour it is not easy for an outsider to determine. He knows as much about seismographs as any of his contemporaries and the difference between one instrument and another finds a parallel, it seems to me, in tweedledum and tweedledee' (6 September 1911, 4pp). Includes notes from a meeting held at Richmond, Melbourne to discuss the possibility of closing one or more of the Australian Colleges (15 July 1912, 2pp).

A file of letters from Fr Patrick Keating SJ to Irish Fr Provincial concerning the Australian Mission and his work as Rector of Riverview. Includes letters referring to Fr Brown's (Superior of the Mission) illness and subsequent hospitalisation (17 September 1912 - 12 November 1912, 3 items).

Letter to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas Brown SJ from Laurence Gillooly, C.M., Bishop of Elphin (a member of the Senate of the Royal University) – ‘I write now to let you know, that at our Committee Meeting when the question of the Fellowships came to be considered, the opinion expressed by his Em(inence) was in perfect accord with the resolution of the Committee. That was on Tuesday at 2 o’c(lock). There was no intimation that he had previously entertained, not to say, communicated to you, a different opinion…Dr. Woodlock…was requested at the close of our Meeting, about 5 o’c(lock) to give you official information of our views respecting the Fellowships…and I had no doubt, neither had any other member of Committee, but he had done so…the selection of the Candidates for the two Fellowships in question was generally supposed to have been deferred by the Senate to his Eminence – and for that as well as other reasons he expected his choice would be approved and so did the other members of the Ep(iscopa)l Committee.’ Includes original envelope addressed to Fr Brown.
