Fr Armellini recommends Fr Van der Hoeven SJ, Rector and Master of novices at Arlon in Belgium. Refers to Fr Walsh’s statement in relation to a villa house in Ireland. Asks Fr Walsh to reply soon to the Fr General in relation to ‘the Diocesan Seminary’; suggests that the Bishop might have changed his mind in relation to handing it over to the Society. Reports on the health of the Pope. Refers to the portraits and drawings of Fr Ffrench, which had not yet arrived in Dublin.

Letter from Fr Torquatus Armellini SJ, writing from the American College in Rome, to the Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Declines, with thanks, the latter's ‘offering’. Refers to events in Rome, and reports that the Fr General and others will not leave the country ‘till they see what can be done and where they may settle themselves.’ Announces that he is to stay in Rome for some time ‘for the communications with the Propaganda &c.’. Asks Fr. Walsh to send faculties to him to distribute.

Encloses a lithograph of Blessed Faber (not included), and offers to send a copy or two of the life of Fr B[also]. Reports on events in Florence, including the attempt by a mob to drive the Jesuits out. Announced that the decree ‘de Virtutibus’ is to be promulgated. Also refers to the promotion of Fr Tarquini SJ to the Cardinalate, which the Pope did ‘as a mark of esteem to the Society’ during their persecution .

Confirms that the letters which the latter referred to had arrived, and refers to the travel plans of Fr Kelly and Fr. Mathew. Also refers to Dr Ricard's mission in England. Reports on a dispute with the Bishop of Salford (Herbert Vaughan) in relation to the opening of a school of the Society in Manchester. Gives an account of his own visit to Rome, including his attendance at a dinner in the Irish College on St. Patrick’s Day. Remarks that they have heard nothing from Milltown since coming to Fiesole. Refers to the success of the new Master of Novices.

Hoare, Novitiate of the Christian Brothers, Belvidere House, Drumcondra to Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ concerning a letter he received from the Brother Director of one of their houses in Melbourne referring to the Bishop's decision that until the needs of Melbourne had been addressed he would not sanction the opening of another house in his diocese (i.e. Richmond).

Includes a letter written from Macao, China concerning the expulsion of the Society from the colony due '...to the hostility of a newly appointed Administrator of the diocese. He's the chief author of a new code of rules for his seminary one of which excludes foreigners.' Continues '...I am to go to Australia.' (20 July 1871, 4pp) Includes a letter referring to the laying of the foundation stone of St Francis Xavier, Melbourne on 8 December 1872. Refers to the passing of the Education Bill. Remarks 'The Bill establishes compulsory free and secular education Catholics cannot therefor accept it...' (2 January 1873, 6pp). Government a pretext to quarrel with us’. Adds that the prospects of the Society retaining their houses and churches decrease every day.

Writes in relation to the process for the canonisation of two Dominican martyrs, about whom Fr Walsh wrote to him, and explains that the Archbishop’s Court [in London] is closed, and the Process has been sent to Rome. States that although they died in England, they do not necessarily have to go through the English Process, and suggests that he avails of the Court of the Archbishop of Dublin.

Encloses a photograph of a painting by Gagliardi Junior ‘and offered by F. Rossi to the Augustinian Father who delivered the panegyric of the Bd Peter at the Gesù’.

Antony Baldinucci SJ, saying that he ‘possessed the theological and cardinal virtues in grada heroico’. Asks Fr Walsh to communicate to him details in relation to the proposed painting of Blessed Peter Faber, and asks where it is to be sent. Reports that the Fr General is in Fiesole at present.

Reports that the Fr General has decided to help Dr Ricard with his college; asks Fr Walsh to find someone to take charge of it, and who would be competent to teach philosophy and theology in ‘a new colonial establishment’. Expresses his admiration for Bishop Ricard and his satisfaction at the thought of a new foreign mission. Refers to the problems with the Bishop of Salford and the opening of a school in Manchester.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Collegio Romano, Rome, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he met Cardinal Cullen while in Rome, and adds that he has heard that the latter had written a letter to Rome critical of the Jesuits in ‘the Manchester affair’, which was settled in favour of the Bishop of Salford. Refers to Dr Ricards’ mission in South Africa. Sends his correspondent two prospectuses of Fr Garrucci’s work on ancient Christian Art. Admits that he had no opportunity of speaking to Fr Angelini in relation to Blessed Berchman's letter. Undertakes to put his correspondent’s letter before the Fr General, and gives his opinion on the opening of letters in the colleges of the Society, and the allowing of scholastics to go out alone. Suggests that his correspondent should send his boys and scholastics to take degrees at the London University.

Letter from Fr Alfred d’Adhémar SJ of the Toulouse province to the Irish Provincial Fr Nicholas Walsh SJ. Discusses the progress of Mr Thomas Wheeler SJ, and his departure from the province. (In French).

Handwritten memorandum by Fr William Delany SJ, regarding the purchase of Killiney Castle by the Society of Jesus. Describes in detail the events leading up to, and surrounding, the purchase of the property. Describes how Fr Walsh (Irish Fr Provincial) insisted on telling the Cardinal about the purchase before the transfer had been completed ‘He went accordingly and returned in a very short time quite disappointed. The Cardinal had received the proposal unfavourably...’. Continues ‘I then said it would be my duty at once to inform Mr Warren (owner of Killiney castle) of this difficulty...He replied that it did not surprise him as he half suspected the Cardinal wished to have the place himself...’. Refers to his (Fr Delany’s) meeting with the Cardinal who finally agreed to allow the deal with Mr Warren to be completed. Remarks that a second meeting with Mr Warren revealed that a better offer had been received and accepted by him ‘I was much disappointed of course and asked him the purchaser’s name and the terms. He told me Mr Richard Martin had bought the property for 11,000 cash...’. Describes a meeting with Mr Martin and their agreement ‘...I finally asked him what he would have for his bargain as he had said he brought it as a speculation. He replied...£1,000 on his bargain.’. Concludes that the purchase of property was completed a few weeks later.

A file of letters from Fr John Ffrench SJ (all except one dated 2 September 1870 are written from Gesú, Rome) to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ (term 20 April 1870 - 17 March 1877). Fr Ffrench's letters were written in his capacity as English Assistant to Fr General. As a result all of the letters have an official slant. Fr Ffrench, SJ died in Rome on 31 May 1873. Encloses small photographs of the portrait (not included). Contains note written by Fr Walsh regarding the content of the letter.

Refers to effect these events are having on the Fr General, and reports on the exodus of the residents from the house. Announces that he and Fr. Lambert are going to the English College. Refers also to the Roman College and the South American College. Refers to confusion in relation to the Pope’s rights over the Observatory. Reports that the Fr General gave him a letter from Fr Walsh, in which he refers to ‘the house in Stephen's Green’, and declares himself to be glad that Fr Walsh has accepted it, and hopes that ‘an energetic man devoted to study’ will be appointed as head.

States that the diplomas are to be posted that day, and that he sent Fr Walsh ‘a lithographed account of the suppression of the Gesù’ two days previously, and adds that he also sent one to Fr Gallwey. Refers to the University, and expresses the hope that it will be successful. Reports that the property of the Irish College outside the walls of Rome is advertised for sale by the Giunta.

Gives the Fr General's answer to Fr Walsh’s query in relation to the saying of Masses. Reports that he said Mass in the rooms of St Ignatius. Refers to the protest of the Irish bishops against Tyndall.
