Remarks that the Bishop did not know that the Society was interested in taking Mungret '…otherwise he would not have consented to Lord Emly's request to invite the Fathers of the H. The first Jesuit school in Limerick was founded by Father David Wolfe SJ (1528-c.1578) in 1565. Over the next three hundred years, the Jesuits presence in Limerick ebbed and flowed. By 1640, a Jesuit residence was established at Castle Lane and by 1672, a school was opened near St Mary’s Cathedral. After an interval of eighty-six years from the Suppression of the Society in 1773, the Jesuits returned to Limerick in 1859 after Bishop John Ryan (1784-1864) had invited the Society to establish a school in the city. The school initially opened in 1859 as St Munchin’s College on Hartstonge Street. The pioneer Jesuit community in 1859 were Frs Edward Kelly (1824-1905) (Rector), Thomas Kelly (1829-1898), Peter Foley (1826-1893), Edmund Hogan (1831-1917), Matthew Saurin (1825-1901) and one scholastic, Mr. Matthew Russell (1834-1912). In January 1862, the Jesuits purchased a neighbouring residence, Crescent House. The church building was started in 1864, opened in 1868 and named after the Sacred Heart in 1869. The college had ceased to be a seminary for the diocese in 1867 and was renamed the Sacred Heart College in 1873. Commonly known as the Crescent College, it ceased to be a fee paying school in 1971 and became the Crescent College Comprehensive SJ. In 1973 the Comprehensive moved to a modern greenfield site at Dooradoyle. Later it became a co-educational school and the Crescent Preparatory School was closed in 1976.

The bulk of material in the Crescent College Comprehensive SJ papers relate to: financial matters (1869-1990); community correspondence (1859-1992); performance and examination (1912-1966); pupils (1881-1974); school administration (1870-1971); school sports and theatre (1882-1969); deeds and leases (1809-1998); photographs (1884-1976).

File includes two copy-books containing handwritten accounts by Lily Doyle. One consists of her memories of the Crescent College (1879-), which was attended by her brothers Charles (Charles), James and Dan (Daniel Simpson). Refers to Charles' academic achievements, to individual Jesuits connected with the college, to pupils, and to important events, such as school theatricals etc. The other consists of four separate pieces on technical education in Limerick, Fr John Gwynn SJ, an altar in the Sacred Heart Church, and the church choir. Also includes an undated newspaper article entitled 'The Last of the Doyle Sisters' relating to Lily Doyle and her family, a copybook containing handwritten essays by James Doyle (1877), and Daniel Simpson Doyle's First Holy Communion certificate from the Church of the Sacred Heart, 15 June 1876.

Copy of circular letter sent by the Irish Fr Provincial to Jesuit houses inquiring as to ‘the practice in…(each)…House as regards the serving of whiskey and wine on coffee evenings which are (1) de jure; and (2) ex gratia. Is whiskey allowed on every coffee evening, and what is the quantity of wine permitted to each…is there any special treatment in the refectory for visitors.’ Includes replies to the circular from the Rectors of St Stanislaus College, Tullabeg; Milltown Park; Rathfarnham; Belvedere College; St Ignatius’ College, Galway; Clongowes Wood College, Naas, Co. Documents relating to the events organised in 1959 to celebrate the centenary of the return of the Jesuits to Limerick. Includes invitations to a 'Triduum of Thanksgiving' in the Sacred Heart Church, of which the Pontifical High Mass was celebrated by Dr Henry Murphy, Bishop of Limerick, on Sunday 8 March. Correspondence includes telegrams and letters, and comprises of congratulations from other Jesuit houses, the Fr General and the Vatican, as well as from lay organisations, such as the National Bank and An Garda Siochana, and replies to invitations to attend the ceremonies. Also includes the typed transcript of a sermon preached at one of the centenary ceremonies, as well as souvenir programmes for the play 'The Strong are Lonely' by Frtitz Hochwaelder, staged by the Old Crescent Players in February 1959 as part of the centenary celebrations, newspaper reports, and souvenir cards. There is also a handwritten document with the heading 'Centenary', which lists the names and addresses of subscribers and amounts pledged.
