Letter to Irish Fr Provincial Cecil McGarry from Sr Mary Regis, Mercy Convent, Doon, County Limerick, following Fr Leonard Sheil's death. Encloses letters sent to her from Fr Sheil over a number of years and press-cuttings relating to him, in the hope they might be useful to the Society when writing Fr Sheil's biography. States ‘I thought I would like to do a little for him after all he did for me.…When he started his missions in England I used to make pictures & pieties to help him & send them to the different addresses. He sent me accounts of these missions…He never thought of himself, his aim was to use everything he could to bring souls to God… I have kept letters of his since 1939 & all the years of the war & until he wrote before Christmas to announce his illness’ (Aug. 1968, 4pp). Encloses seven letters from Fr Sheil, thanking her for sending badges and medals and discussing her health and his missions. Includes letter in which he remarks ‘…thanks so much for all your lovely pictures and things. They are immensely valued over here. Sometimes indeed religion is not valued, but I hope that these pictures etc. will make it impossible for them to forget the lovely things of Our Faith. One little boy brought five Protestant pals, mostly bigger than himself, to the mission at West Hartlepool. I have had many conversions of people years away from Mass and the Sacraments. Many others have rejected me. The [leak]age of the children when they leave school, & have no Catholic school, and no good parents, is frightful. I start missions again on January 8th at Coventry and near Northampton. They will be very tough, so help me with your prayers. I bless each house I enter, put them on their knees, if they don’t refuse, and instal (sic.) a holy picture’ (28 Dec. 19--, 2pp). Handwritten letter by Fr Patrick H O'Kelly SJ, Jesuit House, Galway, to Father [ ] St Ignatius, Galway outlining how documentation surfaced to confirm the existence of Jesuits in Athlone, the discovery of documents and the persistence of former student in researching the Jesuits in Athlone, ‘…went to the records of the Protestant Diocese of Meath’. Refers to a book 'Opus Catecheticum' and 'Regulae Societatis Iesu in 8', published in Antwerp by Ioach Trongnaesium, 1605, with 'Residentiae Athlonienis Sotis Jesu' written on it. Includes typewritten copy of the above letter.

A file relating to an article written by Fr Patrick Gannon SJ in the 'Irish Ecclesiastical Record' supporting a fellow Jesuit's interpretation of a passage in St. Mark. This article sparked a controversy as Fr Gannon's views were disagreed with by Cardinal MacRory (and other eminent scripture scholars). Includes a letter from Fr John R MacMahon SJ (Fr Provincial), St Francis Xavier's, Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin to Fr Byrne SJ concerning the controversy. Remarks 'In reply to a letter from Fr Gannon, I wrote to him to say that I could not allow him to pursue the discussion about St. Mark III, 20 - 21 any further…that I would not approve of his seeking an interview with the Cardinal; that he might write to the Cardinal, but that I would have to see a draft of the letter beforehand.' Remarks that he received a reply from Fr Gannon and includes a passage from the letter describing it thus 'He is taking a most extravagant view of the situation.' (15 April 1945, 1p). Includes a copy of a letter from Fr Provincial (Fr MacMahon SJ) concerning a letter Fr Gannon wishes to write to Cardinal MacRory regarding the difference of opinion between the two men. Remarks 'Let me assure you (and I wish I could convince you) that you are taking far too tragic a view of the whole business. If you could put it out of your mind for a month, you would, I am confident, take a more tranquil view of things.' (26 January 1945, 1p). It would appear from the file that Fr Gannon was not able to put the matter out of his mind and that it was only as a result of his death in 1953 that the matter was laid to rest. It would also appear that Fr Gannon's view was gaining some support amongst scripture scholars when he died.

– letter from Fr Sheil enclosing a list of his sodality work in Galway, to help his successor, ‘I have tried all these two years to get these works into such order that anyone could carry them on, but I have not had the time. Many details of organization have still to be put into practice. The walls are built but the roof is not yet on. However there is plenty of brains and holiness among the men and women engaged in the work. Letter from Michael Browne, Bishop of Galway, Mount St Mary's, Galway to Irish Fr Provincial John R. MacMahon SJ asking him to allow Fr Edward J Coyne SJ devote as much time to the Vocation Organisation Committee over the coming months so that the report may be compiled; includes a copy reply from Fr MacMahon remarking that Fr. Coyne will '...devote to the preparation of the report of the Commission all the time and energy available.' (20 March 1942, 1p).

Letters to the Irish Fr Provincial concerning the celebrations for the fourth centenary of the foundation of the Society. Includes:

• letter and notes by Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ (See also ADMN/3/18; 29; 37) concerning a discovery he made in the course of reviewing a German History of the Jesuit Missions under Fr Roothaan, written for the centenary – ‘I found that the four years spent by Fr Robert St Leger at Calcutta (1834-38) mark a turning-point in the whole missionary policy of the new Society. He and Fr Roothaan differed on a fundamental point, and he was recalled after four years. But Fr Roothaan was later compelled by wider experience to adopt the policy which he had opposed in Fr St Leger’s case – i.e., the policy of permitting our Fathers on the missions to accept promotion to episcopal dignity.’ (26 February 1940, 2 items);

Correspondence between Irish Fr Provincial Laurence Kieran SJ, Fr John MacSheahan SJ, Rector, St Ignatius, Galway and Thomas O'Doherty, Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh relating to the authority of the Bishop in insisting that the acts and five minutes sermons are connected, and limiting the number of Masses said at St Ignatius. Refers to the university sodality question, and Fr O'Dea mentioned that he didn't bring it to the Bishops attention (Canon Davis).

Correspondence between Fr John MacSheahan SJ, Rector, St Ignatius College, Galway and Fr James O’Dea, Dean, University College Galway over concerns of Fr O’Dea, that pressure was applied to female students to attend Mass and attend the Children of Mary Sodality at St Ignatius Church, instead of the university, ultra vires the authority of St Ignatius Church.

A file of letters from Fr John MacSheahan SJ (Superior), St Ignatius College, Galway to Irish Fr Provincial concerning community matters and matters relating to the college including financial matters and the re-opening of the school. Remarks that the prospect of the college re-opening has prompted enquiries from interested parents (11 January 1928, 2pp).

A file relating to the abandonment of a procession that was due to take place to celebrate St Patrick's day in Galway. The decision was made to abandon the procession after it became apparent that the IRA had been invited to take part. Includes a lengthy letter from Fr John Joy SJ, St Ignatius College, Galway to Irish Fr Provincial Laurence Kieran SJ concerning the situation. Remarks that Fr O'Farrell, SJ, as President of the Gaelic League, was invited to be Chief Marshal and became very upset when he discovered that the IRA were to take part. Remarks that he (Fr Joy) had an interview with the Bishop who was very angry. Explains how it was decided to abandon the procession (13 March 1933, 12pp).

Letter from S. MacMargamhna SJ, Rathfarnham Castle, County Dublin to Fr [Michael Quinlan], [St Ignatius College, Galway] concerning the Bishop [of Galway] and his right to dictate to the Superior of an exempt house regarding the number and times of public masses on Sundays or holidays.

Draft letter from [Irish Fr Provincial] to Fr Michael Quinlan SJ (Superior), St Ignatius, Galway concerning documents relating to the lease of property belonging to the Society of Jesus in Galway to a Mr O'Dea. Demands an immediate explanation. Remarks 'It seems to me that under no circumstances should this transaction go through…'.
