Conveys to Fr Tuite the Fr General's permission to accompany his brother to Rome, and also to release Fr Thomas Kelly SJ from his office of Rector. The latter's successor is likely to be Fr Edward Donovan SJ. Acknowledges receipt of two copies of Fr Curtis' book. Adds that the Fr General was happy to hear of the success of Clongowes in the Intermediate examination, and is anxious to know how the scholastics fared in the University Exam.

Letter from Fr Alfred Weld SJ, writing from Fiesole, to Irish Fr Provincial Nicholas Walsh SJ. Reports that he has come into possession of ‘some good relics’, and undertakes to send some to Ireland. Refers to Fr Carbery's health, and asserts that a new rector for Clongowes should be appointed as soon as possible. Also refers to Fr Ronan, and the decorations in his church, and to [W] Lynch. Comments on the fact that ‘someone in England has written strongly against the London University’.

Reports that Fr Plowden’s body ‘lies in the middle of the church yard at Jougné’. Fr Tristram declares himself to be ‘well satisfied’ with Fr Carr, who, he believes, will ‘prove a worthy son of the Society’.

Letter from Michael Slattery, Archbishop of Cashel, to Fr Peter Kenney SJ, Clongowes. Asks the latter to give a retreat to the clergy of Cashel diocese the following July.

A file relating to Mrs Louisa McCann (sister of Fr Laurence Kieran SJ) and the will of her late husband Mr Arthur McCann. The file relates to the financial difficulties experienced by Louisa McCann following the death of her husband, due in part, to the failure of the trustees of her marriage settlement to ensure that £20,000 was put in trust for her widowhood. Her brother Robert Kieran acted as her solicitor. However, it would appear from correspondence between Louisa and her brother Robert and Fr Kieran SJ that Louisa and Robert fell out with each other and she eventually asked Fr Kieran SJ to act as mediator and to look after the legalities of the estate. Includes a letter from Louisa McCann, Teltown, Donaghpatrick, Navan, County Meath to Fr Kieran, S.J. Remarks '...Bob's behaviour has certainly been awful and his letters all trumped up nonsense...he knows my unfortunate position and is taking advantage of it...I could not have believed he would have turned on me as he has done...I have you at any rate - otherwise I am really a very desolate creature now - struggling hard to pull along and trying not to be a burden on anyone.' (15 June 1938, 2pp). Includes a copy letter from Fr Kieran SJ, Clongowes Wood College, county Kildare to his brother Robert Kieran concerning the disagreement that has arisen between Louisa and Robert. Remarks 'I have often asked you to control your temper and your nerves - you have not done so; on the contrary, I regret to say you are getting steadily worse; so much so that I have often asked myself in sorrow where it is all going to end. Are you any the better now do you think for having inflicted this pain upon one who is poor, defenceless and alone in the world, and do you really believe that in doing this act you have given good example to your children?' (19 June 1938, 2pp). Includes a copy letter from Louisa McCann to her brother, Robert Kieran. Remarks 'I appreciate that you have had no end of trouble or worry over the McCann estate...but your recent attitude and behaviour towards me has made it impossible for me to approach you any further - I am sending the documents to Lal (Fr L Kieran SJ)...I have every confidence in him and shall be directed by what he advises...' Letter from John Cashel Hoey, 17 Campden Hill Road, Kensington, London, England to Dr. Russell concerning Professors [at Maynooth College]. Remarks '...I cannot understand Mr. Gladstone's action in the matter...the letters which I sent Mr. Crolley are evidence that he knew the Professors were not satisfied and was at least willing to consider how they could be satisfied. Continues 'I do not at all despair of getting the proviso inserted in the Lords.'

Remarks 'Something depends on the age of the children. The eldest girl, being fit for school is probably old enough to be in danger of becoming a thorough Protestant under the mother's care.' Continues 'He (William Bliss) ought without delay to appoint a testamentary guardian and to take care the document is all right in it's form and execution....'.

When I saw it first a very small segment was obscured but in a short time more than one third was covered. I never had a perfect idea of an eclipse until today. Describes what it is like to be studying in Maynooth. Remarks that he has a bad place in the study hall as the people around him talk. Refers to his room 'I am beginning already to feel the cold at night. I suppose it is because my curtains are so bad if they may be called curtains which are all full of holes and as thin as wafer.' Includes a xerox copy of the letter.

Describes his day when he rises at 6 o'clock and the various chores he must attend to. Remarks 'We have a great deal of praying to do here.' Continues 'The lay college is quite separate from the Ecclesiastic and it is one of the rules not to hold any intercourse with those in the other college.'

Letter from Fr Joseph Lentaigne SJ, Clongowes Wood College SJ, County Kildare, to Mary Lentaigne, Great Denmark Street, Dublin (23 July 1871) concerning his nephew Victor, and money paid on Victor's behalf by Irish Fr Provincial to support his studies in Spain, England and Belgium (enclosed account from Milltown Park, Dublin, 6 May 1871), and brief biography of Fr Joseph Lentaigne SJ by Fr Fergus O'Donoghue SJ ([1995], 1p).

A file relating to the 'Bruton Controversy/Debt'. In February 1884, Dr Bruton, a Dublin merchant transferred, to the Apostolic School, Mungret, a debt of £869.2.6 owed to him by Clongowes. According to Bruton's document of transfer, Clongowes was to pay the debt within a reasonable time, and, pending the payment of the principal sum was to pay, in addition, 3% yearly interest to the Apostolic School. Nolan SJ was a member of the Distribution Committee ‘appointed by the Local Government Board to look after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian Refugees arriving in Dublin’. Most of the letters comprise offers to house refugees or concern schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually. Includes:
– letter from Dr Bernard Coyne, Bishop of Elphin (1913-1926) to Lady Moloney seeking her assistance in the securement of a disused barracks in order to provide shelter for Belgian refugee families (21 Oct. 1914, 1p.);
– bills from drapers and household stores for items purchased for the refugees;
– letters relating to troubles between Protestants and the Catholic refugees in Portadown;
– letters to Fr Nolan from refugees and members of the Belgian Refugees Committee;
– lists of names and locations of refugees in Ireland and names and addresses of people who housed refugees.

On 17 October 1914, the Father Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus, Thomas V. Nolan, received a letter from the Local Government Board to go down to the North Wall at 7.30am on the 18th and meet the 100 Belgian refugees ‘and one hundred each of the following days’. This was due to ‘a few of your Order, who speak Flemish’. Subsequently, the Irish Provincial became a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of refugees arriving in Ireland. The Irish Jesuits received offers to house the refugees and organised schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually.

A file relating to Fr Bartholomew Esmonde SJ missionary work in Malta. Includes documents relating to religious instruction of Catholics, descriptions of clerical controversy, disputes with Protestants, conversions of Protestants to Catholicism, preaching, Catholic education, addresses presented to the Governor of Malta, Fr Esmonde's Journal describing his time in Malta, correspondence. Letters are addressed to Fr Esmonde at San Calcedonia, outside Valletta. This house belonged to the Sicilian Province and Malta had a close connection with the Sicilian Province.
