Letter to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas Brown SJ from Laurence Gillooly, C.M., Bishop of Elphin (a member of the Senate of the Royal University), concerning Fr Brown’s support for the candidature of Fr Hopkins to the Fellowship of Classics. States ‘His Eminence, Card(inal) McCabe, informed me on Wednesday last of the selection of Fellows made on that day by the Senate of the R(oyal) University; and on Friday I learned from him that he had on the previous day resigned his place in the Senate in consequence of the rejection of his proposal relative to the Fellowships. I had hoped…that the communication made to you by Dr Woodlock of the resolution unanimously adopted…by the Episcopal University Committee in reference to the Fellowships would prevent the unfortunate conflict in the Senate; and it was with deep regret I learned that you had, in opposition to the Coetus Episcoporum, represented by the Episcopal Committee, kept on your two Candidate (sic); and thereby rendered the conflict inevitable –…I take the liberty of writing to you now, to tell you how much I deplore the step you have taken and the conflict in which it engages you and to express a hope that you will for the sake of your great undertaking in Stephen’s Green…remedy the mistake you have made by withdrawing the Revd. Fr Hopkins, as you are of course still perfectly free to do. For many years past I have publicly & privately used my best efforts to secure to your Society an eminent position in your University System. If the result is to be, from the very outset, a conflict…I must say I will heartily repent of what I have done and persuaded others to do in this matter.’ (For background to the appointment see T. J. Holograph letter from Bishop Edmund Tanner, Cork to Fr General Everard Mercurian SJ.

English translation of a letter written on 30 January 1673 by Archbishop Oliver Plunkett to Fr Giovanni Oliva SJ, General of the Society of Jesus, informing him of his appointment of Father Stephen Rice (1625-1699), a Jesuit, ‘a person of profound religion…(and)…great prudence – unwearied in suffering, most assiduous in working in the vineyard of the Lord’ to work in ‘the pulpit & Schools of Armagh.’ (Fr Rice was made Superior of the Mission in 1672). Also discusses the state of the Society in Ireland, ‘I see that it is in a most desperate condition here, I see to my great sorrow that it will not last long in Ireland if there is not a better way to train and receive novices and to punish the wild & disobedient…If you, Rev. Father, who are so full of zeal to preserve & propagate the Faith in heretic countries & for the great love you always had for this unfortunate nation, will not lend a hand to Save the S.J. in Ireland I fear it will not have the Success that I wish it.’ (The original version forms part of MSS B 33)

Discusses political matters, remarks that the Corn Bill '...is safe after last night's division.' Continues 'If it be finally settled on Friday, the coercion bill division will take place that night but at any rate on Monday. A small majority against ministers is considered certain, but I find it believed that Peel will stay in though beaten. I need not say how glad we shall be if it be so. Peel would then dissolve and in the new parliament the Whigs, if successful, would be as weak as we could wish them.'

Letter to Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ from Irish Provincial John Fahy SJ, concerning Fr Gwynn’s ‘future work’. While Fr Gwynn is keen to go to the missions in China, Fr Fahy is anxious that he should stay in Ireland and work at U.C.D. and University Hall – ‘I write…that you may know how I sympathise with missionary work. A decision will not be made for some time about your future. Meanwhile I think that I should say frankly that, in my opinion, our CCs would for many reasons be opposed to your leaving Ireland – wishing to have you for U.C.D., Dr Coffey is, I understand making arrangements to have a chair in Ancient History founded for you.’

Refers to a group of Polish fathers who are destined for Clongowes but remarks that he does not know when they will commence their journey. Refers to the General Congregation and the naming of the new Fr. General. Remarks 'You have no idea of all the imbroglios which I have witnessed here; men are men everywhere. I have so little that could edify you on the subject that I judge it more prudent not to enter upon it.' Asks to be remembered to members of the community in Clongowes Wood.

Asks if his correspondent might be disposed to go to Colombia to educate and carry out missionary work, as the population of Bogotà wish European Jesuits to do. Also refers to the political situation in Ireland.

States that neither Fr Callaghan nor any of the other surviving Irish ex-Jesuits are at liberty to dispose of their property in any other way but in favour of the Irish bishops. Refers to the claim that a Papal rescript exists, which re-establishes the Society of Jesus in the Kingdom of Ireland, in which case the property of ex-Jesuits would belong to the Society. Letter appears on the same document as a letter from Fr Thomas Betagh to Fr Stone.

Includes transcription of replies received.

Expresses surprise and dismay at the latter’s actions and emphasises that his (Stone’s) letter to Troy was written in confidence. Claims that he knows of no ex-Jesuits who maintain that their Society is canonically re-established in the British Dominions. Refers to a ‘severe letter’ received by him from Cardinal Borgia in relation to the matter. This document also contains copies of correspondence between Cardinal di Pietro and Fr Stone, which are described separately.

Letter from Fr Patrick Joy SJ, Mungret College, Limerick to Fr Coyne concerning Fr Bourke's wish to return to Ireland from Hong Kong by air.

Copy of letter from Cardinal di Pietro to Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ. Refers to the appeal made by the prelates of Ireland to Rome in relation to the will of the late Fr Richard Callaghan. Claims that the latter, according to an oath sworn on 23 August 1793, should have left his property to Fr Betagh, and not to Stone. Demands that Stone transmit to Rome an authentic copy of the Pope’s alleged rescript, by which Callaghan believed himself to legitimately free to dispose of the funds of the ex-Jesuits in favour of Stone (In Italian). Letter appears on same document as a copy of the reply to it from Fr Stone, and a copy of an excerpt of a letter from Fr Stone to Archbishop Troy.

Letter to Fr Aubrey Gwynn SJ from J.G. Mudd[iman], Dorset Square, London, who is working on “a sort of ‘Contemporary History of Cromwell.’ ” States that he is ‘very decidedly of (the) opinion that a volume …of Cromwell’s letters would be of very great importance. He has a definite story to tell, tells it at length, knows personally all the persons he mentions and has a knowledge of English so perfect that he hardly ever makes a mistake in the spelling of a name.’

Copy of letter from Fr Marmaduke Stone SJ to Cardinal di Pietro - reply to the latter’s letter of 7 October 1809. Refers to Archbishop Troy’s appeal to Rome in relation to the will of Fr Richard Callaghan, and reminds the Cardinal of the oath sworn by all English priests to renounce all pretensions of the Holy See to interfere in civil affairs within Great Britain. Also alludes to the dangers of such interference especially when the Holy See is subject to the rule of Napoleon Buonaparte. Discusses the will of Fr Callaghan in relation to the agreement made by Irish ex-Jesuits in 1793, and asserts that no promise was ever made to leave Jesuit property to the Irish prelates. (In Italian). Letter appears on same document as a copy of the one to which it replies, and a copy of an excerpt of a letter from Fr Stone to Archbishop Troy.

Explains that he is working under a Royal Commission as a co-translator of the Brehon Laws and also with the Irish Archaeological and Celtic Society, to translate and edit an ancient Irish Law Tract, the Battle of Moylena.

Letter from Ellen (nee Mulholland) Russell, 86 Harley Street, London, England to her mother concerning Charles Russell's (her husband) speech in court. Remarks 'I have just returned from the court after hearing the end of "the speech" and my head is so full I can hardly speak or write...I feel I can never thank God enough that I have lived to see this day. My Darling has had a fearful task to accomplish and he has done it well...' Continues '...I believe he has raised the Irish cause to a position which it never before held in the eyes of the people of England.' Describes the packed court room and the congratulations she received after the speech 'Dear old Mrs Gladstone caught my hand in both of hers and said "it was inspiration; I believe it has all been done by prayers" - just as a Catholic might say.'

Refers to the involvement of Fr Thomas Glover SJ, Fr Gaetano Angiolini SJ, Cardinal Gonsalvi, Fr Gabriel Grüber, the Emperor of Russia, and others. States that Fr Angiolini advises that some Irish novices should be sent over to Palermo to make their vows, and then sent back to Ireland, in order to ensure that the property of the Irish ex-Jesuits remained with the Society.

States that Paccanari ‘has taken a wife & walks the streets of Rome with her with shameless effrontery.’ Expresses the fear that the Irish have complained of him (Kenney) ‘for having led F. Stone astray’.
